Just found it on Tvtropes.. anyone here given it a go?
It looks like it could be interesting, in the very least due to be a sequel to an mmo from over a decade ago.
How's it gameplay-wise? Does it use an action bar method like WoW, DDO, Everquest 2, or other older mmos? Or does it use a more console style set ability bar, like Guildwars 2?

As disappointing as it may seem, its just another WoW-Clone. Or as far as I could tell. Honestly didn't get too far. The game play was all choppy and wasn't that entertained. The 'Kahra' system was actually kinda interesting, but beyond that all it had was names I was familiar with. Meh.

I tried to play it, but couldn't get over the first two hurdles. :smallsigh:

1. Making a account: Their website is technically so convoluted and full of crap code decisions that it's not letting me. ("You must enable javascript!" But I have for your site!)

2. Downloading the game: The client fails to install via the msi package and when I worked around it via getting the .exe out of the package and have it update itself it fails at package number 17 ("Failed Patch Binding") every time.

So they really don't want me to play it. :smallannoyed:

I had a lot of great fun with the original Ragnarok Online. Heck, my current screen name was one of the characters I made for it. In retrospect it wasn't that great of a game (horrid grinding, few decent quests, terrible class balance etc.), but it did come out before WoW and I made a lot of friends while playing it, so I still have fond memories. The good things were some great scenery and character/monster designs, plus the bard and dancer classes, who were great fun due to their joke skills.

Ragnarok Online 2 is basically RO1 with fewer class options, and more tedious fetch quests. They really hopped on the old WoW clone bandwagon. There's even mount options to buy now.

I was willing to give it a good go, and I did... up until it gave me an NPC to escort across an area filled with aggressive enemies. Then I said NOPE and quit.

The khara quest system was interesting. It's a grid filled with mini quests that you can choose to take when you hit certain levels. It's stuff like gather X items, kill X enemies, use X potions, etc. If you complete certain lines on the grid you get a large bonus (yes, like bingo). Nice idea, but still just a bunch of fetch quests.

I might go back and skip the story quests to just go and explore, but I feel that the whole thing is just so generic that there's little to keep my interest.

I'm currently at level 19 / 24, and I'm enjoying it. However, I like grindfests, and I'm being injected with nostalgia here which is probably coloring my opinion differently (I had played RO1 from eRO's beta, through it becoming iRO, and then til around 5 years after.. so lots of nostalgia for me).

It's different from RO1 though. It's very quest heavy, and the quests are important. The Khara system doesn't just unlock simple rewards, it unlocks titles. Titles give pretty major stat bonuses.
Some of the main quests you need to do in order to accomplish the Khara quests. Some of these are subtle, some of these are actually "finish these 3 story quests".
What this means is if you don't do these quests, your character will be worse for it. As in, it's not really... optional.

Personally, I'm fine with the quest grind and it's a nice "just play" game.

I think my biggest issue with it, and the biggest struggle the couple friends I introduced to it have, is that the game is bad at explaining how things work. Or at least, pacing their explanations.

This is one of the easier quests (other than the simple 'go here' ones) to do. You just walk slowly, and choose a path that avoids the enemies.
The NPC has enough health to fully tank a couple enemies, and I think she was attacked... maybe once for me?

I may give it a try,
I don't usually mind grinding too much, and I can't imagine it's much worse than eq2(obtain 200 sticks to win a teacup, or bring the hobbit 100 slabs of meat to obtain a fork :smalltongue:) in that respect

A thought occurs. For those who have played this, how would you rank the different classes? Because I started off with the swordy, and I kinda got tired of the battle routine of Bash, Bash, Bash, Aura Strike, repeat. Maybe a mage would be more interesting to play?

Mage is either:
Activate fire seal.
Fireball -> Fire bolt -> Fire bolt -> Fire bolt -> Fire bolt -> Fireball -> Fire Bolt Fire Bolt -> Fire bolt......

Which sadly is the most efficient solo mage. :<

For parties:
Activate fire seal.
Frost bolt -> Frost Driver -> Electric Bolt -> Frost Driver -> Water Seal -> Turn in to controller / pseudo tank and try to peal.

Also sadly, this is a heavy investment in skill points. The two builds are exclusive unless you want to real spend money to switch.

Ragnarok Online? Making even a token effort to be modern?

Does not compute.

Anyway, the original RO was terrible, but I loved it in spite of itself. Is this newfangled one free to try? I don't have anywhere near the time required to really play an MMO anymore, but I'm perversely tempted. My budget is shot, though, so if it costs money, that'll give me an easy way to just say no.

It's a free game. You can get it on Steam.

Free, you say? Well, well. Let's see how this ends up being. And may whoever's watching have mercy on my soul.

Well, I tried it. I'm not really impressed. I'm 2 or 3 hours in, and I'm still obviously in the noob zone (just hit level 10 or so). I agree that the explanations and lack thereof are really poor, and the control scheme grates on me. I accept that I'm not very far and that there's a possibility that there's some depth I'm not seeing, but overall, it's just plain not grabbing me.

There are some decent bits. I kinda like the combo-hit system (or at least the idea of it—kinda like the Adrenaline system from Guild Wars), and I appreciate that as a Thief, it didn't make me actually keep track of SP (I don't think I could run out if I tried, though it might be a concern later). I would rather have quests than aimless monster-grinding (which, let's face it, is what the original was), even if the quests seem clunky and often pointless. The fact that you can buy back items you sell to NPCs is interesting, though it took me for friggin' ever to find out HOW to sell to NPCs.

Also, the words (both writing and voice acting) are comically bad. I expect nothing less from a game with RO as its name. I find that enjoyable, in a cringeworthy way.

I'm not going to delete it just yet. I may put another hour or two into it and see if it gets any better, and I may still keep it around for medicinal purposes, though I suspect the original is better for that (don't ask—when my ADD flares up, RO can weirdly make me feel better in ways that many other things do not).

Which classes have people played? I'm kinda interested in seeing what they did with the Acolyte, but the fact that everything is so bleedin' slow makes me not want to make another character just yet.

I tried it with a friend and we were both thoroughly unimpressed. Yes, the khara system is a nice idea, but that's about the only thing I found positive while the rest, while not gratingly bad, was unremarkable.

It's not RO, which is good!

But it's also not RO, which is bad.

I really want to love it, as I played RO1 quite a lot. But I just can't. There are better free MMOs out there(Spiral Knights, SWTOR, TERA), and WoW is still a thing.
