If you have a bow with the splitting property and you cast arrow split which happens?

A. You fire 1 arrow. It splits into 3 more arrows (roll 1d4+1 with arrow split spell) then those 3 arrows split with the splitting property for a total of 6 shots.

B. You fire 1 arrow. It splits into 3 more arrows (roll 1d4+1 with arrow split spell) and the splitting property splits the initial shot one more time for a total of 4 shots.

Im pretty sure B but just checking.

Thanks in advance :)

Ah, someone else stumbled upon the Shotgun Maneuver.

The Splitting occurs before the Arrowsplit spell, as Arrowsplit works its magic midflight whereas Splitting fired two arrows to begin with.

So 1 becomes 2, now you have 2 arrows that are then split into 1d4 + 1 each. So minimum 4 arrows, maximum 10.

Now, can anybody think of a good way to get this onto a magus/sorceror/wizard spell list, and not a prestige class or hybrid caster?

Extra Spell: You learn a spell of any level up to one lower than your highest spell level known.

I have a question: arrowsplit's description seems to imply that you should cast the spell just before firing the arrow/bolt, but the target is "one masterwork arrow or bolt", not "one masterwork arrow or bolt you are about to fire". Also, the duration is istantaneous. Does this mean that you can cast the spell on every single ammunition you're going to use just before the beginning of the campaign and enjoy throwing volleys of arrows without actually having to ever cast the spell again?

What's the highest level of Assassin or Ranger spell your Sorcerer or Wizard can cast? Until you can provide an actual number for that, you can't do the "one lower" arithmetic.

Extra Spell does not help here.

As for the original issue, that'll be up to your individual DM. The interaction of these two effects will depend on the order in which their splitting takes effect.
Any missile fired from a splitting weapon, or an arrow or bolt enchanted with the splitting ability, breaks into two identical missiles before striking the intended target. If an arrow or bolt subject to the Arrowsplit spell splits before the splitting enhancement happens, neither of the resulting Arrowsplit projectiles is the missile fired from the splitting bow, so no splitting effect occurs. However, if the splitting effect happens first, both resulting missiles share the non-splitting properties of the original, including the Arrowsplit spell. Since both effects describe their splitting as happening "in mid-flight", it's up to your DM which happens first.

It says that the arrow or bolt must be fired during the same round the spell is cast, or the magic is dissipated and is lost.

Incidentally there is no such restriction in bloodfreeze arrow.

Assuming your DM agrees with Curmudgeon's interpretation of Extra Spell (most do), Recaster (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20050407b&page=3) and Wyrm Wizard (Dragon Magic) can both get spells onto your spell list without many restrictions, though both sacrifice caster levels to do so.

Yep, while I disagree with Curmudgeon's opinion on extra spell I'm pretty sure errata limited extra spell to your own spell list :smallfrown:. (though personally I allow you to use extra spell to pick up stuff from other lists)

Ickky. Lost caster levels are not good.

You could get a Drake Helm from one of the Eberron books. It'll let you add up to 4 spells from any spell list to your own.
