I'm curious: what are the highest HD creatures (without character levels) officially printed in 3.0, 3.5, and Pathfinder, and what are the sources they're found in?

So far the highest I've found is the great wyrm prismatic dragon from the Epic Level Handbook, at 78 HD. I'm sure there's got to be more.

I think Devastation Beetle wins. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/devastationVermin.htm

Dragon 297 has the Sphinx on page 50 with 248 HD. I think that's highest, if you want something that's been updated to 3.5 I think there's a god or two that might have more than the beetle.

The Great Sphinx is the one I remember as well. There's probably some stupid stuff in one of the third party source books though. But I try to ignore those.

Wow. How on earth is that justifiable compared to the other sphinxes (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/sphinx.htm), at 8-12 HD?

Because it's not a living Sphinx, it's an animated version of the one in front of the Pyramids. It also has the highest ability score in the game with its 290 Strength. Actually, it sets records in many categories what with its CR 100, almost 400 attack bonus, and ridiculous save DCs.

Huh. That seems ridiculously excessive just for the sake of being excessive. After all, an epic caster who creates a stone colossus (which sounds like basically the same thing?) doesn't get anywhere near such awesome abilities.

Pretty much. It was included with a bunch of other historical sites turned into D&D things. Stuff like Stonehenge as a Greater Artifact and things. It also has a DR of about 300 iirc.

Yeahhhhh, that pretty much solidifies the impression.

In context, is that Damage Reduction, or Divine Ranks?
