seeing past polymorph

I recall there was a spell that sees people's original forms in a true seeing like manner.

How about True Seeing (3.5 (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/trueSeeing.htm)/PF (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/t/true-seeing))? Or what makes the spell you are searching different from True Seeing?

True seeing sees through illusions. Polymorphng isn't an illusion, it's a physical alteration. The spell I'm thinking of (which I can't for the life of me remember) allows one to see the true forms of polymorphed creatures overlain with their current form. So lets say I use alter self to make my scrawny wizard look like a burlier, true seeing doesn't show that he's a scrawny mage.

It actually does, True Seeing also sees through transmutations:

The subject sees through normal and magical darkness, notices secret doors hidden by magic, sees the exact locations of creatures or objects under blur or displacement effects, sees invisible creatures or objects normally, sees through illusions, and sees the true form of polymorphed, changed, or transmuted things. Further, the subject can focus its vision to see into the Ethereal Plane (but not into extradimensional spaces). The range of true seeing conferred is 120 feet.

Though True Seeing does what you're asking for, the spell you're thinking of is probably Discern Shapechanger from Spell Compendium.
