As some of you might remember I posted a thread some time ago for the last member (that is me) of a group I'm rejoining after absence for a year. I've settled now on a Changeling/Combat Wizard 5 / Master Specialist 1 / Recaster 4 (start is 10) ... finishing recaster and taking master specialist afterwards till 20 (or 15 if I want archmage)

Taking both substitution Levels of changelingwizard and swaping the level 5th combat wizard feat for the changeling acf (my dm oked that). The main reason I take the one level of Master Specialist is because of the Level 2 and 4 abilities of the Recaster.

From RoE
Expanded Knowledge: At 2nd level, and again at
4th level, choose a spell up to one level lower than the
highest-level spell you can cast from any class’s spell
list. You can add this spell to the spell list of the same
arcane spellcasting class to which you added your
increased spellcasting ability at that level.

So if I'd take Recaster straight at 6 I'd loose one level ... Recaster looses one Casterlevel therefor at Level 2 he'd be at 6 or 3rd grade spells meaning a max of 2nd for the Expanded Knowledge and a max of 3rd for the second expanded knowledge. So by taking one Level of Master Specialist I shift the whole thing to 3rd and 4th grade.

Now I'd like to hear your opinions on which two spells to take of 3rd (respective 4th) or lower grade to add to my spelllist. Remember any spell list ist allowed!

Thanks in advance

trapsmith has some very nice spells at lower levels (level 1 , 2 and 3)

honestly they're all quite good so it's hard to pick which exactly would suit your best

low level dispel magic or haste are both very decent choices (haste especially since persisting it before way more affordable spell slot wise

if you get another higher level slot, duskblades get ray of frost as a level 5 spell which isn't bad

Hmm which book is the trapsmith in? I've heard of it before but I'm in general not that experience with arcane magic as I'm in psionic and martial adept classes so I don't know quite a few of the good tricks out there :smalltongue:

Well I don't think I'll get more things like those two so 3rd and 4th are the only I'll get .... remember though I can take spells from divine spelllists too! Might be some gems out there I haven't heard anything of.

Personally I'd go for odd spells which wizards find hard to duplicate rather than trying to get a lower-level haste spell or whatever. Plant growth to become a successful landowner or a friend to such, or mark of justice as part of getting a horde of blackmailed minions, or glyph of warding to defend a stronghold, something along those lines.

For your information my banned schools are necromancy, evocation and enchantment.

@avr: yeah that are also my thoughts. while lower level spells are great I think it would be better to talk spells from, say, the druid, cleric or some divine list.

edit: well I just looked into the combat trapsmith and the class has indeed some very, very tasty spells at low level. Like Haste as 1st level? or Great Dispel Magic as 3rd? Lets me pass Dispel Magic completely ... though I agree that some divine magic would be great.
