Greetings! I'm planning on making an UM, using a grey elf as a race.

The allowed books are as follows, starting at ECL 8.

Complete Divine, Arcane, Adv., Mage, Warrior, Core, PH2, MIC and MM I-V

The build thus far:

conjurer4/sor1/UM3

Banned Schools: Enchantment & Necromancy

Feats chosen:

Scribe Scroll (wizard entry)

1st level: Extend Spell

3rd level: Persist Spell

6th level: Chain Spell

ACF: Abrupt Jaunt (replaces familiar)

By my math (which is hopefully right), I should be casting as a 6th level wizard and a 4th level sorcerer, before Arcane Spell Power granted by the PrC at 1st level.

Looking at the UM's class features, he gets Augmented Casting, which is a nice perk, since I can burn sorcerer slots to fuel my metamagic infused spells.

The wording may have gone over my head for me.

Augmented Casting (Su): Starting at 3rd level, you can choose to sacrifice a spell or spell slot from one of your classes to apply the effect of a metamagic feat that you know to a spell cast using another arcane class. (For instance, you could sacrifice a sorcerer slot to apply a metamagic effect to a wizard spell.) This sacrificed spell or slot is lost (just as if you had cast the spell) in addition to the spell you are actually casting.

The level of the spell to be augmented can't exceed 1/2 your class level. For example, when you first gain this ability, you can only apply a metamagic effect to 1st-level spells. A 10th-level ultimate magus can affect spells of 5th level or lower.

The level of the spell slot sacrificed must equal or exceed the spell level adjustment of the metamagic feat. To empower a spell, for example, you would have to spend a 2nd-level or higher spell. You can't use this ability to augment a spell already affected by a metamagic feat.

You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + 1/2 your class level.

So is Persist a poor choice at this point? Since I believe it requires 4 spells higher to fuel and I do not have access to them now? Also, the last part about using the ability "class level", they are refering only to UM levels, right? If that is the case, I would be able to use this ability 4 times per day, which isn't bad.

Is it a good idea to go all 10 levels in this PrC? I calculated that by the end, I'll be casting as an 11th level wizard and 11th level sorcerer (again, not counting Arcane Spell Power).

Would it be a smart move to move after that to Master Specialist?

Sorry for all the questions, I haven't had a chance to play a caster like this before, and wanted to get it as right as possible.

Thank you in advance.

Beguiler from PHB2 is generaly a better choice for a Wizard/Ultimate magus as it cast on Int too.

If you do not want to, replace Beguiler by Sorcerer and do not take the banned school advice.

Race: Strongheart Halfling or Human.

Feat:
1: School focus (Conjuration)
Bonus: Extend spell
3: Practised Spellcaster
6: Twin spell would be better.

Beguiler 1/Focused Conjurer 3/Master Specialist 1/Ultimate magus 10.
Banned school: Enchantment, Illusion (You get a lot of theses on the beguiler casting side) and Evocation (Conjurer do not need Evocation). Focused specialist is an ACF from PHB2.

You have to take parcticed spellcaster (Beguiler) at Level 3 so you can level up your wizard casting side at each level of Ultimate magus.

You end up casting as a 14 level wizard and a 8 level beguiler (which is better than 11/11), with a caster level of 18 for wizard and 12 for beguiler at ECL 15.

Yes, Persistent Spell is a poor feat to use, as you wont have a lot of spell to use with.
