I am currently visiting my Home country of Burma for the summer. I am living at my extended family's home (we moved to US with me, a brother, a sister and parents in 2010) for lodging. I got a curiosity and wanted to share this photo of banana, which might be confusing for those who haven't seen bananas other than cavendish (we called Cavendish as Thee Mwae, meaning Sweet fruit in literal terms, in Burmese language).

So, what kind of Banana would you call it? It's same as cavendish but shorter and thicker.

I know which Kind you mean, and I like them a lot more than Cavendish, but I don't know their Name. After some googling, this page (http://www.wisegeek.org/what-are-some-different-types-of-bananas.htm)calls them Baby Bananas.

It's a small off duty czechoslovakian police officer.

Is it just my phone that makes that photo look humongous?

Anyway, looks and sounds like a ladyfinger banana to me.

Am I childish, or did that make anyone else giggle?

Does look like a baby small off duty czechoslovakian police officer to me, don't know if that's the actual name or just a familiar term.

No it's actually bigger than baby banana and we called them Phee Gyan in Burmese language. It's not plantain since it's good enough to eat it raw.

I'd be careful around that banana if I was you. It looks dangerously similar to something I've seen before...

I talked with my brother and he said that it's plantain.

A plantain is just any starchy banana used in cooking, usually banana types that are more likely to be eaten cooked rather than raw. Most of the pictures of "true plantains" I can see just look like normal bananas.
I'm pretty sure what you have there is a ladyfinger banana, as seen here (http://cookalmostanything.blogspot.com/2010/02/senorita-banana-fritters.html)...

Here's two more snap shot of the banana for more clarification.
1. The scale between readers digest book and my hand.
2. Inside of the banana.
I think it is not Lady's fingers.

Clearly this rare subspecies of banana known as Terrablis Bananis. My old encyclopedia is a little water damaged, but I can just make some bits, "DO NOT INJES..." , "...RNING: MAY CAUSE SEVER..." and "...EXPLOSIVE DIAR...".

(it is nice to know that, though)

Nice to get the scale. Still looks like a lady finger to me *shrug*

It's obviously the Tyrion Banana.

Good name for a cultivar. Pairs well with tits and wine.

Banana armor? You have gone around the bend.

Don't talk with your mouth full, lad.

Right you are! However, like "plantain", "ladyfinger" is a catch-all term that can refer to a variety of different cultivars.

Now although I am a monkey, I cannot claim to be a banana expert. However, I do have keen monkey vision. The "ladyfingers" in your photo have a rounded shape. The OP's photo shows a banana that has corners. So while both types are petite, the similarity ends there.

In other words, we see once again that size ain't everything.

Banana armor? You have gone around the bend.
It's easy to slip into.

Plus you gain natural camouflage when standing in front of enormous piles of bananas... so... that's handy... when you have to fight big tarantulas.

Or the Tally Man.

Or Harry Belafonte.

Well, seeing as we're all discussing The Fruit That Shall Not Be Named without any modly intervention thus far, does anyone have a recipe for a banana cake? Is there a preferred type of banana for baking?

Geez, could you make that photo any larger? I think my computer screen strained a muscle trying to display it all at once. :smalltongue:

I don't get it; are bananas a prohibited forum topic?

And I've never heard of a banana cake, though I guess anything's possible. Where you referring, perhaps, to baked-good commonly called banana bread (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=banana%20bread&gbv=2&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi)? (at least that's what it's called in the U.S.A.)

The standard banana bread is a quick-bread, meaning it uses eggs to make it light and fluffy instead of yeast. But with a little trial and error you can make just about any baked desert or food with mixtures and add-ins. For example, pumpkin-bread is another common quick bread for when you get tired of pie, but I've made a yeast-based pumpkin bread as well.

In other words, we see once again that size ain't everything.I've seen normal bananas that are dead straight, and others that are almost doubled over, so I'm not convinced that the shape is particularly significant. It's the extra-pointed end that has me wondering, although it's not dissimilar to other ladyfinger pictures:

I still think a type of ladyfinger is the most likely, but I don't know anything about specific banana cultivars.

*shakes head, laughing* Serpentine, you need to audition for What's My Fruit?

T-209, it looks a bit like a Dwarf Cavendish, but I don't know if that's grown in your part of the world. You've really got me intrigued, now! Do you happen to have a photo of the plant itself, especially the blossoms? That would help with identification!

They kind of look like a mysore banana, maybe misi luki? That's the Samoan name for the banana I think (and for some reason I believe applied to a totally different banana in the US), but it's a successful commercial Indian variety which would make sense geographically. They're short, fat, sweet lady finger types and many have pointy tips.
