does anyone have a good concept for a playable troll race, with no racial hit dice and no more than LA +1? nothing too much like WOW, but along those lines.

Treasure Standard
Alignment Usually chaotic neutral
Advancement (see chart)
Level Adjustment +1

The humanoid creature standing before you looks like a very large orc, complete with green skin and short tusks. However, a pair of long, pointed ears emerge from it's long black hair and a long tail tipped with fur swishes behind it. It stands before you in a suit of studded leather, with a massive club over it's shoulder.

Young highland trolls stand about seven or eight feet tall and weight about 500 pounds, but they grow all through their lives. As they grow, a male's nose will expand, becoming large and bulbous. A female's nose will grow as well, but not nearly as fast, and it will develop a slight hook. Both males and females develop spots of darker green on their arms, chest, back, shoulders, and face. Their tusks become more pronounced and their tails longer and thicker. By old age, a highland troll can be 15 feet tall.

Combat:
Highland trolls may not be particularly intelligent, but they are quite strong, and they have been fighting practically from birth, so even young trolls have plenty of experience in battle. Single trolls fight recklessly, depending on their regeneration to protect them. Larger groups use tactics, rotating two or three groups of trolls. One group attacks and fades back once they're injured, waiting for their regeneration to restore them while the second group moves in. This rotation can lead to long battles, but the trolls are smart enough to know that time is on their side.

Powerful Build: The physical stature of a highland troll lets him function in many ways as if he were one size category larger. Whenever a highland troll is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), the highland troll is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him. A highland troll is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as improved grab or swallow whole) can affect him. A highland troll can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. However, his space and reach remain those of a creature of his actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject’s size category.

Regeneration: A highland troll's regeneration is overcome by acid, cold, and fire damage. If a highland troll loses a limb or body part, the severed portion regrows over the next hour.

Highland Trolls as Characters:

+4 str, -2 dex, +2 con, -2 int, -2 cha. Highland trolls are stong and tough opponent, but their bulk makes them less than agile, and they are not known for their intellect.
Medium Size: No special bonuses or penalties based on size
A highland troll's base land speed is 30 feet.
+2 natural armor bonus
Natural weapons: Bite (1d8)
Special Qualities (See above): Powerful Build, Regeneration 1, Scent
Automatic Languages: Common and Giant. Bonus languages: Orc, Goblin
Favored Class: Barbarian
Level Adjustment: +1

How about this:

Giant type
Medium size, 30ft move
+2 Str
+2 Con
-2 Dex
-4 Int
-2 Wis
-4 Cha
2 natural claw attacks 1d6
Darkvision, Low light vision
Regeneration 1, increasing by 1 every 2 HD, overcome by fire and acid

At 5HD, gain Powerful Build and Rend. Claw attacks increase to 1d8.
At 10HD, gain Large size and gain +4 to Str. Claw attacks increase to 1d10.
At 15HD, gain +2 to Con. Claw attacks increase to 2d6.
At 20HD, gain an additional +2 to Str and Con. Claw attacks increase to 3d6.

It's a bit unconventional, but it might (might) be a high-powered LA 0.

Get DM permission to play a Goliath with different fluff (and maybe make it giant instead of monstrous humanoid). Goliath is available as a web preview and is detailed in Races of Stone. Optionally, add the Troll bloodline from the SRD.

Also, there is a Troll Blooded feat from Dragon 319. It is a first level only regional feat and has Toughness as a prerequisite, so you can't take it without somehow getting a bonus feat at first level (a flaw, maybe?). Maybe your DM would let you trade out the Mountain Movement and Acclimated traits of the Goliath in exchange for it.

How about?

+4 Str, -2 Dex, +2 Con, -2 Int, -2 Wis, -2 Cha
Giant type
Medium size, 30ft move
Low light vision
Powerful Build
Two primary claw attacks (1d6); increasing to 1d8 at 10th level.
Improved Toughness: gains extra 1 hp for each level obtained.
Irongut: +2 bonus on saves against ingested poisons and non-magical diseases
Radioactive Regeneration: Whenever a troll takes radiation damage, ignore it. Instead gain hp equal to 1/2 the troll's constitution modifier.
Auto Languages: Common and Giant. Bonus Languages: Any
LA: +1

Radioactive damage im handling like the opposite of temporary hp, so 10 radiation damage would lower your maximum health by 10. this way, trolls have a huge edge in the wastes.

Here's a clean LA +0 possibility that includes almost everything in the Monster Manual entry.

Troll

+4 Str
-2 Int
-2 Wis
-4 Cha
Giant type
Medium size
Powerful Build
Two claws 1d4 + Gore (add another 1d4+X damage if both claw attacks hit)
At 2HD, gain Regeneration 1, increasing by 1 at even-numbered levels to a maximum of +5. Acid and fire, etc.

Give 'em a couple of good racial feats for natural armor and more Regen after 10th level. Maybe an Troll Shaman option that trades the Str bonus and Powerful build for a +2 in Wisdom and no Int penalty. Maybe a path to attain true Large size.

How well does Gore work here? A 1st-level Troll Fighter 1 with an 18 Str is attacking (let's say with a Magic Fang up, just for fun). He full attacks, rolling 1d20+6 twice.

If 1 claw hits, that's 1d4+4, which is normal low-level chump change. If both his attacks land, that's 3d4+12, which is a very serious hit for a 1st level character to make. Thoughts on the power level here? I'm generally in favor of good things going to melee, and this might be worth making a build around if it were a real game.

I really like Admiral Squish's homebrew!

Note that there are Age Categories on those trolls. They get bigger and tougher as they get older.

I wonder if there should be gender differences, too? The females (trollops?) being prettier than the males.
