View Full Version : What kind of music is this?

This may be an odd question, but I'm trying to figure out what sort of music I like. The main features I've noticed that I tend to like are female vocalists, for lack of a better term "flow" to the instrumentals in the background, and a tendency towards more abstract lyrics. Part of the problem is I don't know enough about music to explain it in a coherent manner, so here are some songs I like. Can anyone help me classify what this style is called and recommend some similar artists? I've mostly been just listening to things I've stumbled on randomly, and I would like to be more thorough about it since I am sure there is more good music out there that matches this style. Thanks.

If by "sort" or "style" you mean "genre", then there is no genre which encapsulates the stuff you've listed here. The closest you will get to a succinct description of this kind of music is what you already wrote.
As for finding similar music, I recommend Pandora Radio.

Why don't you look up the genres of the artists in wikipedia?

Some of the stuff by Florence and the Machine perhaps? Drumming song would be my first suggestion
Vaguely similar, at least to my mind, to Garbage and Curve are Bel Canto (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXpjHvs7wPU) and Cranes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBiSTv_XcAQ&list=PL7A5D1E2EDAD73F41)
Some of John Cale's later (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYRbOenWr7c)stuff (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jew6sJW_usc)might be what you're looking for. Almost all of John Cale's stuff is good, but his style has changed over the years.

While I don't think there's a discrete genre label that encompasses the kind of sound you're describing, I think I have some idea what "kind" of music you mean. If I'm not too off base, you may enjoy some or all of the following.
Siouxsie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKx_MSIbGgg) Sioux (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPs22CxXE8Y)
Concrete (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENL7F-K8jug) Blonde (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeRRZz8H_oA)
Natalie (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1v6s4_natalie-merchant-ophelia_music) Merchant (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MpeNwR5XYo)
Jesse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlCIjOBeoCQ) Sykes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmdGcTQ6pkY)
Des (http://vimeo.com/19123568) Ark (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNCjQbtxQnI)
Sinead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hnqOhuuP70) O'Connor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThqKGOBtpp0)
Tracy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oi3YUYpaJvE) Chapman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TO9Qa7MpAvw)
EDIT(s): I promise their music is better than my typing. All those tags took, like, five tries.

I'll second Tracy Chapman. I especially like Fast Car and Turn my Back Around.

So...
Singer-Songwriter is the genre?

I don't think I'd ever call, say, Fleetwood Mac "singer-songwriter," at least not in the sense of the genre.
