Alright Giant in the Playground, power up your steam bikes and put your goggles on! Because this months theme week as decided by popular vote is

Steampunk Week!

This thread if for showing off, discussing and asking for avatars tied to Steampunk. With that in mind let's set the mood with a quote from one Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte:

"You would make a ship sail against the winds and currents by lighting a bonfire under her deck? I have no time for such nonsense!"

http://th04.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2011/221/7/9/steampunk_bonaparte_by_applepoo-d3howf1.png

"Steam powered horses are the future!"

Note: Quote may note reflect reality. :smalltongue:

Anyway, the most important thing to do is to have fun. And if you're stuck for ideas always remember that you can Just glue some gears on it and call it Steampunk. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFCuE5rHbPA) :smalltongue:

Right.

Could someone modify my scientist? A proper Victorian suit intead of a lab coat, a really magnificient moustache and sideburns and some shiny brass Tools instead of what he's using now? Also, a silver watch chain. My watch has a silver chain, none of that gaudy gold.

Edit: And he should probably be fusing an animal and a machine, instead of two animals :smalltongue:

Ooh I will keep an eye on this!

But when is Dieselpunk week? I like that even more, from an aestetic point of view. I have always loved Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Functionalism.

Basically design from the turn of the century to about 1945 is where it's at for me.

"Steam powered horses are the future!"

Being nitpicky: If I had designed that, there would have been a chimney bellowing smoke or visible electricy somewhere on it; as it is now it looks much more like Clockpunk. Too non-clunky, too little hints that it is truly running on steam.

(Still love the picture; just pointing it out)

There's steam from the nostrils and the glowing eyes. But not really enough.

That said, I love clockpunk just as much as Steampunk. Perhaps even more, but that's just because I have a love for Baroque clothing.

Just as planned... :smallamused:

Also, I started early, and by "early", I mean "before I even nominated it":

The reason is in my sig, btw.

That said, I'll probably swap to something a bit more extravagant when the week comes around...

Bah. The only difference between the two is that in one they've worked out how to use steam to drive their clockwork devices.

Hmm... I might go for an avatar that isn't a pony this time. If I can think of something, I'll make a request.

Either of those.

Specifically, I was thinking for each:

A flaming Lateral, in steampunk getup (with goggles and toolbelt), holding a blowtorch and looking cool.
A normal Ahab, with a clockwork pegleg and harpoon gun, looking cool.

Alternatively, one could conceivably do a steampunk version of The Evil Midnight Bomber What Bombs At Midnight. I'm easy.

Thanks in advance!

I don't really want to do something that just normal tech but with steam. Brass generally has greater steampunk feel to me than just slapping gears on something. It's not what you have, it's how you use it!

I always imagine steam punk as a mad scientist trying to improve everything mechanically.

Thus a nudist who is trying to enjoy the benefits of the sun would still be sunning nude but instead of using tanning lotion on a beach would have a mechanical sun enhancer such as a giant brass magnifying glass while laying on top of a hot air balloon to decrease distance to UV source...

Oh, crap, I forgot about this! Can someone please do a steampunk take on either my current avatar or the Ahabtar below?

For Lateral, I'm thinking steampunk getup with big goggles and a blowtorch, and for Ahab I'm thinking steampunk pegleg and fancy harpoon gun, but feel free to go with whatever you think works. Thanks!

Not gonna go steampunk after all, but Alucard was already reasonably Victorian in dress… yeah, I'm just gonna cycle through my Masquerade Week avatars again.

Would still be interested in a Steam Punk Iroh, maybe a dapper gentleman style? I have no skill at avatar-fu though.

Two, if possible. A monocle and a pocketwatch (or at least the chain for it leading to a pocket) if it's not to much trouble. It just doesn't seem like fully steampunk if you don't have that. :smalltongue: Otherwise it is absolutely amazing!

Aaand I got lazy, so I'm just reusing the avatar NamonakiRei made for me last time this week came up.

As I see the date to the start of the week has just passed, allow me to re-state my desire for a steampunk avatar, this time with better links to the exemplary images.

Or this one:

Either will do, OotS-ified in style. I prefer the second one (which was the original request), but I found I also still had the first one lying around. If anyone could OotS-ify either in style for me for an avatar, that'd be grand.

I've completely missed the start of this week due to matters beyond my control. Fortunately, my pirate week (at least I think it was pirate week) is Steampunk enough for now.

Mmm, not my best work, but not too bad either. I had so much trouble with the hair and it still didn't turn out right. Ditto the gauntlets.
