I played Discworld MUD a bunch years back. That seems to still be around, there were some updates on the RSS feed today.

I also played Nord and Bert Couldn't Make Head or Tail of It, an infocom text adventure based on wordplay, on Frotz a year or two ago. I remember seeing a web-based version, though I don't know where.

I'm pretty sure www.kingdomofloathing.com is still around, and is an awesome text based game.

I've been quite the fan of text-based games for a while!

While there's a few I can't remember off the bat, here's a few that might interest you (other than those already stated, of course. I would recommend KoL and Fallen London for the uninitiated)

Sryth: Google it. It's a browser game. I normally wouldn't recommend games that only have a limited trial to play for free, but I loved the writing and the mood of the thing enough to say that you should give it a go as well.

Silent Conversation: Not exactly a text game in an of itself, but a fantastic game for those who love to read. I do, anyway. It's basically like reading a book...but with the mood enhanced by gameplay mechanics.

Now, I heard someone recommend Frotz. Interactive Fiction is a personal favorite of mine, and while you do need an appropriate platform to play these games, it is undoubtably worth it. If you have the time, try 9.05, Shade (my no. 1!), Dual Transform, Delightful Wallpaper, The Gostak, Inside Woman, Shrapnel and Theatre, to name a few.

> LOAD GAME

You load up a text based adventure game. There is a big button marked "START".

> CLICK BUTTON

I do not understand the word "click".

> PRESS BUTTON

I do not understand the word "press".

> PUSH BUTTON

You push the button. You are immediately eaten by a Grue.
