What would happen if you cast Dimensional Lock on a Summoned Gate?

ah, that's what I thought. I had a DM try to convince me that it would hold the gate open until it was all dispelled.

I agree on the arrival of cataclysm. That would be far cooler. Like the portable hole/bag of holding trick.

out of curiosity, would permanency work on a gate? ...unless it was dispelled, of course.

That's pretty much a 'nope.' Dimensional Lock does exactly the opposite of holding Gate open-it renders it useless for travel.

So far as permanency goes...also a no, though someone may rise to prove me wrong. But by the SRD, there's a pretty limited list of spells you can actually Permanency. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/permanency.htm) Might I recommend Teleportation Circle instead?

Aside: One of the greatest moments of my teaching career thus far was when a student sarcastically answered a question with "Oh, well, the Universe would explode", and I was able to say "Right! Can you explain why?".
