This was all nicely formatted in microsoft word... Guess that doesnt translate well when you copy and paste to here lol. Anyways, Ive always loved the IDEA of kobolds- just not the -LA they seem to have. That being said, I tried to make it a race that could be played from 1st level- though its tone fits an evil or neutral campaign better I suppose. PEACH at will peoples, thanks for any feedback!


Dragonkin Kobold

Though small of stature, this humanoid's very stance projects confidence. It has a scaly hide punctuated with short spikes, a long reptilian tail, and a lizard like head. Long, twisted horns spiral back from its brow.

Dragonkin kobolds are a proud race- some would say arrogant. They are directly related to kobolds, but have retained more of their draconic heritage. Though they share their cousin’s predilection towards evil, not all dragon kin kobolds live in the shadow. They are rarely encountered outside of their trap-filled warrens, but occasionally one will be found adventuring, typically in search of some powerful draconic artifact, or just to increase its own arcane puissance. Of course, those few dragonkin kobolds that lean away from evil have even more reason to leave their homelands and search for their destinies elsewhere...

Personality: Dragonkin kobolds are defined by the pride they take in their draconic heritage. They view dragons as the most powerful and majestic creatures in all of creation, and aspire to be as much like them as possible. They try to assemble a hoard and value fine gems above all other treasure. Dragonkin kobolds are also clever, however, and enjoy clever tricks. Though sometimes cruel, the dragonkin kobold is always practical.
Dragonkin kobolds are proud creatures, and typically have a moral code that they follow to the letter. A being who inspires their wrath, or worse, embarrasses one, has made an enemy for life. Conversely, dragonkin kobolds always pay their debts, and a creature that befriends one has made a staunch ally.
Physical Description: Dragonkin kobolds are slightly larger than their lesser cousins, and usually stand between 3 1/2 to 4 foot and weigh up to 45 to 50 pounds. A dragonkin kobold's scaled hide can be any color that a chromatic dragon can be: blue, black, green, red, or white. Their horns typically match their coloring: a kobold with red scales would back backswept horns, while one with black hide would have more taurine horns. Regardless of their skin tone, dragonkin kobold's eyes always glow a bright red. Their tails are nonprehensile. Unlike a regular kobold, a dragonkin kobold takes great pride in its appearance- their clothing and equipment is always well cared for and clean, and they tend to dress in colors that compliment their scale coloring. Dragonkin kobolds reach adulthood around the age of 14 and generally live into the middle of their second century.
Relations: Dragonkin kobolds have more enemies than allies, as can be expected for such a haughty race. They hate gnomes and lesser kobolds the most- gnomes they will not tolerate, and they consider lesser kobolds nothing more than slaves. Surprisingly, dwarves and dragonkin kobolds generally get along- and in fact, more live in dwarven cities than anywhere else- due to their shared lawful tendencies. Though they consider them somewhat frivolous (though capable of a clever trick or two), dragonkin kobolds and halflings generally get along. They are generally distrustful of the other, larger races- humans, elves, half orcs, and half elves. Not surprisingly, dragonkin kobolds get along with chromatic dragons famously, while metallic dragons see them at a dangerous nuisance.
Alignment: Dragonkin kobolds are most often lawful. They are more often evil than neutral, and rarely good. That being said, good or chaotic dragonkin have a greater impetus towards leaving their caves and warrens in search of a better life.
Dragonkin Kobold Lands: Dragonkin kobolds can be found in literally any climate. They generally live in tribal groups, lead by their most powerful sorcerer- or by a chromatic dragon that they serve. All kobolds in a given tribe have the same coloration- a kobold that hatches from its egg and is a different color is generally abandoned. Whatever their homeland is like however, there is one thing that remains the same: it will be a deadly and trap filled warren, and their subterranean homes will be well hidden, both through mundane and arcane means. Outside of their warrens, dragonkin kobolds are most often found in dwarven cities, or far underground in drow or duergar lands, though occasionally they are found in human cities.
Religion: Dragonkin kobolds almost universally worship draconic deities, such as Tiamat or Bahumut- in the eyes of a dragonkin kobold, nothing other than a dragon is worth worshipping. True clerics are rare amongst them however; favored souls are much more common than clerics. In a typical tribe, the religious duties are typically lead by a sorcerer or an adept, though some more powerful dragonkin end up becoming mystic the urges.
Language: Dragonkin kobolds speak draconic and common. Some of the best known books on dragons and draconic lore were written by dragonkin.
Names: Dragonkin kobold's names are usually some combination of words in draconic that relates to the kobold's character or appearance, such as Dizzkril ("Fire scales"), Sizzryn ("Broken horn"), or Zizkil ("Lightning"). Due to the nature of draconic, most of their names are somewhat sibilant sounding. When in lands outside of their own, dragonkin kobolds sometimes translate their names into the tongue most commonly spoke around them. There is no variation between male and female names.

Dragonkin Kobold Racial Traits
• +2 Charisma, -2 Strength: Dragonkin Kobolds have a fierce personality, but are simply too small to be a physical threat.
• Small: As a small creature, a dragonkin kobold gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, and a +4 bonus on Hide checks, but he uses smaller weapons than humans use, and his carrying and lifting limits are only three-quarters of those of a Medium character.
• A dragonkin kobold's base land speed is 30 feet.
• Darkvision: Dragonkin kobolds can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and dragonkin can function just fine with no light at all.
• Dragonblood: Dragonkin kobolds receive a +2 on all charisma checks made when dealing with a creature with the dragon type.
• +1 Natural Armor. A dragonkin's scaly skin offers it a small degree of protection.
• Add +1 to the Difficulty Class for all saving throws against evocation spells cast by a dragonkin kobold that has an energy type. Their connection to dragons allows them a small degree of control over the elements.
• Automatic Languages: Common and Draconic. Bonus Languages: Dwarven, gnome, elven, orc, goblin, undercommon.
• Favored Class: Sorcerer. A multiclass dragonkin kobold's sorcerer class does not count when determining whether he takes an experience point penalty.

This seems interesting enough...

To my inexpert eye, this almost warrants a level adjustment in and of itself. It has small size, granting numerous bonuses, 30 foot speed, darkvision and natural armor.

It is also unclear whether or not this kobold would actually have the Dragonblood subtype (making its type into Humanoid (Reptilian, Dragonblood)).

As for formatting, you should just go back and embolden each section of the racial description.
Formatting from most word processors can't carry over to the forums because we use a different system for it, I believe. For example, put in front of the emboldened text, and after it. Highlighting the text and hitting the bold button will place those for you.

I completely disagree with this. It does not nearly approach what a +1 LA race should really be, and really it's quite comparable with the Gnome.


I do think I would give this race the Dragonblooded subtype (rules for which can be found in Races of the Dragon.) It fits far too well to pass up adding it in, and it doesn't grant anything unbalancing.

Beyond those comments, I don't have much more to say beyond 'I like this.' It's simple, does what it wants to do, and does so without really being underpowered or overpowered. It's a good option, but not the only option you might want to choose.
