The birds chirp quietly and the leaves crunch beneath your boots as your party follows the farm boy deeper into the forest. There does not seem to be a path but your guide marches on undaunted as though he has made this trek many times before. Little light filters down through the canopy and patches of light shift upon the ground. The smells of sap and animals fill your nose as you trudge through the forest.
Your guide walks a little farther and then steps aside to reveal a clearing in the forest. A collection of small wooden huts are built in the clearing and a slightly larger stone and thatch structure sits in the center. Some torches are erected on poles around the camp but none are lit. The only source of artificial light seems to be a soft glow from one of the huts.
"This is where that wanderer lives" the farm boy says. "And were that old Grey Mage hideout is"
The boy looks down, double checks his payment and then bolts back down the path, leaving you in the clearing.

You don't see any immediate danger though you notice some odd runes drawn on the side of the wall you can see through a small crack in the wall of the hut.
You hear some shuffling from inside the hut but nothing not to be expected. Other than that the chirps of birds fill the air. You also think you might have heard a howl in the distance...

Ahead of him Reise saw several figures milling around outside the old hut in which he had taken refuge. Thoughts passed through his mind; 'My resting place is disturbed. Why must I never have peace?' He approached them through the shadows, his vision and sharp senses allowing him to move with ease to stand by the dimly lit door. At last, standing behind these intruders, he spoke in a cold, quiet voice "Who are you that disturb my place of rest?"

Ri, you notice what looks like a man walk out of the hut and skulk around the shadows for a bit. The then comes up behind your allies. He says something but you can't hear what.

The rest of you who went to investigate the hut, just hear "Who are you that disturb my place of rest?"

One of the men has tensed, and there is now something about him that suggests an aura of danger. Reise focuses himself in preparation for attack, regarding the others who surround the dangerous man. Armed? Yes. But not displaying aggression. Odd. Nevertheless... "I asked who you were, but your demeanour suggests violence. Always, there is violence. Never peace. Oh, if but some day I may be so lucky as to find peace."

Yssul turned, and in the same motion, drew his scimitar halfways out of the scabbard. He managed to screw up the rather graceful move, as he caught his sleeve on the longspear strapped on his back, however. He panicked for a moment, until he realised that the man made no overly aggressive moves. Yssul fell back in a relaxed pose, sheated his scimitar completely, and smiled at the man. "Hello there, friend! I'm Yssul Celtisman, and we are an archaeologist team, of sorts. We heard about the old mage's hideout, and thouht we'd check it out." Yssul weighted his options for a moment. Should he ask the man to join them right away, or see if he could more to win the man over? He decided to wait untill this omnious "wanderer" seemed more at ease.

Reise found his brow arching in surprise at this new man, this Yssul. Surprise? That was not something he had felt in a long time. This man too had shown agression, but then... 'friend'? Was this a trick? Or was this, at last, a lapse in his torment? "Friend? You speak those words though you do not know me." Reise lets out a short, bitter laugh. "But how could you? I do not know me. Indeed, it seems this was once a place of knowledge. Old, though not as old as I. I am Reise."

Reise cast his eye across the two wolves. He must be careful to mind his power reserves, lest they overpower him before he can react. "Those of you with swords and armour, gather to the front. They have yet to reach us yet, but these things move nimbly, and strike with a beastly hunger." Reise began to move slowly backwards towards the hut and behind the line of armoured visitors, drawing a crossbow from beneath his amorphous cloak and concentrating on manifesting some additional resilience upon himself in case the wolves broke through the line of individuals more suited to absorbing damage than himself. Still wary of his new visitors he began to mutter incomprehensibly under his breath and make practised motions with his hands so as to simulate the gathering of arcane magics. "One can never be too wary", he thought. He doubted any would have the knowledge to understand his craft, but one amongst them appeared to have some knowledge of magic about him.

Reise draws his crossbow and retreats 15ft whilst manifesting Vigor upon himself, gaining 5 temporary hit points.

First round of combat:
Roo leaps in front of Ri, snarling and the wolves and brandishing his Glaive menacingly.

Ri, suddenly noticing the danger, quickly but carefully casts his spell. As the bubble of energy surrounds him he breaths a little easier.

A wolf glares hungrily and charges towards Roo. The Kobold is ready for it however and his deadly glaive swings out and cleaves through the wolf's neck, dropping it in one fell swing.

Yussel leaps across the battlefield moving with an amazing speed and grace. As he moves the shadows seem to bend and blur his image making it hard to look directly at him.

Reise moves to the back of the group while simultaneously drawing his crossbow. He maneuvers his hand and mumbles some words as he does this. His body seems to respond to these commands and his entire being perks up with new vitality.

Another wolf leaps from the bushes and charges Yussel. The Swordsage attempt to stab the animal with his spear but the creature easily dodges. The savage canine leaps at Yussel bit the nimble Swordsage maneuvers so the creature's mouth is filled with chainmail and not flesh.

Marrod move next to Reise and makes a comment to him, ready to attempt to steal and Spells Reise might have. The two, now behind the lines engage in conversation as their allies fend of the wolves.

Yet another forest canine rushes from the foliage, this time at Roo. Yussel attempts to cover his comrade and lunges at the wolf with his longspear. However the beast dodges the blow and leaps at Roo. The kobold expertly dodges the attack using his small size to his advantage.

The Wolf near Ri charges the Wizard and attempts an attack. However, Ri's spell, cast only moments before, repels the attack.

Folkk, muttering about oranges, starts bolstering his allies spirits with tales of haylofts and wizards (Perform, Storytelling) He then moves between the mysterious stranger and the wolves.

Second round of combat
Roo, hissing something in a Draconic language, assaults the wolf, that tried to maul him, with his glaive. The weapon connects with the wolf and inflicts a terrible wound.

Ri utters the words of power related to 'force' and 'movement' and from her hands springs a bolt of white energy. The bolt strikes the wolf and sends it sprawling.

Yussel strikes with his spear. As he does so it looks as though the shadows bends around his weapon, making it seem as though two spears are coming at the wolf. The beast dodges one only to be struck by the actual attack. The spear inflicts a grevious blow and the wolf looks like it is on it's last legs.

Seeing that the wolf struck by Yussel could die in a moment Reise turns his power at the one Roo attacked. He imagines, in his mind the particles of the wolf moving, heating up. He then projects this image on the dust of the world. Suddenly the wolf howl in pain as it's skin reddens.

One of the wolves, a savage hunger in it's eyes leaps at Roo. However, the kobold effortlessly dodges the attack weaving away so the wolf gets a mouthful of grass.

Marrod, deciding that he had better not risk it with this stranger, moves into combat ready put his fists to work.

Another wolf lunges as Yussel. The sSrdsage tries to dodge but the wolf's jaws catch him. Fortunately, Yussel's chainmail prevents any kind of serious damage.

The wolf engaging Ri get up quickly and assaults the wizard. However, the bubble of force that Ri erected hold and the wolf cannot manage to so much as touch the elf.

Yussel jumps back from the wolf and japs viciously with his spear. The polearm strikes the wolf solidly in the chest and the animal drops, bleeding to death from it's deep wounds.

Reise continues to focus on his strange power, causing the molecules of the wolf to heat up and displace. The creature's skin blisters in multiple places releasing blood and causing the creature to fall.

Ri lets the others have the conversation with the potential guide while he sits on [ground/rock/tree stump] and begins inspecting the damage caused by the bite. He will do his best to clean it up.

Dropping his defensive posture, Marrod turns to Reise. "We're here to check out that old mage's hideout, see if there's anything of value. We heard you lived out here, so we were hoping to hire you as a guide."

"Sounds like we could all benefit from working together, yeah?" Yssul smiles at whom he has now decided is a mage. An intruiging one at that. Just the kind of thing Cora would have liked him to study.
There would be time for that later, however, and Yssul were not about to anger the man again. Instead he examined Ri'anthal. "That looks bad. I heard that animal-bites can get quite nasty if you don't do anything about them." Looking to the rest of the group, he asked "Do any of you know how to treat something like this?"

The wolves do not appear to have eaten well recently as they are all slim. Still if you skinned them all there would probably be enough meat to feed everyone without having to dig into your rations.

Seeing as you don't know exactly what to looks for or do you are unable to repair any major damage from the wound Ri. You do however manage to clean the wound well and wrap it up with some spare cloth.

Though you cannot see the sun setting the darkening sky is heralding the coming of night.

Folkk, you find plenty of dry wood around the forest as well as some kindling. Making a fire will be no challenge.

Marrod, Folkk and Yssul work together and soon have a decent fire burning. Marrod then gets to work cooking the wolf meat over the fire.

Meanwhile Roo, takes a spade and begins to burry the wolves bodies. After digging a hole, about 3 feet deep, Roo dumps the fetid, mangled bodies of the wolves in and then entombs them with dirt.

After the meat is done the 6 of you sit around the fire, eating your wolf in silence. The air cools as the sun sinks below the horizon and the moon rises in it's place. Eventually it is time for rest and you retire to one of the cottages that is spread around the clearing.

Reise declares he will take the first watch and stays up, eyeing the tree line. Once his two hours are up he finds Roo and shakes the Kobold awake.

Roo leaves his cottage and starts patrolling about the glade using his Darkvision to see where his comrades would only perceive blackness. After his two hour are up he wakes Marrod.

Marrod's watch is largely uneventful. He sees nothing move in the forest and hears on the sounds of the night: owl calling and the scampering of rodents over fallen leaves. Once his shift has concluded Yssul relieves him.

Yussel watches the night trying to peer into the blackness. Nothing stirs and two hours after he awoke he awakens Ri and returns to sleep.

Ri, having just waken from a peaceful rest watches as the sun rises from the horizon heralding the coming of day.

He scanned the party before moving towards the hut, whereupon he gathered what few meagre belongings he had and re-emerged. "I shall resume my travels. Perhaps these mountains bear truths yet unfound by my searches. Best of... luck, in yours." He moved swiftly towards the edge of the clearing, and with a few quick motions delved into the underbrush and was gone.

He walked on for many dozens of miles before stopping to rest in a distant cavern for a few hours, gathering berries and nuts for sustenance and drinking of the water of a nearby river. He then entered the river, and walked through it for several miles more, so as to obscure his scent for those that may choose to follow, and continued on his journey, travelling at a brisk pace for twenty hours each day for several days until at last he found another place he was content to study.

As Roo looks around he sees nothing different from the day before. All of the huts look just as they did and the central stone structure sits placidly, it's smooth walls implying great craftsmanship. The birds are beginning their chorus and the sound of their tweets and cheeps fills the air with a strangely peaceful, dissonant din. The trees around the clearing shoot into the sky and seem to loom with a great foreboding about them. Sunlight filters through the trunks of the trees and throws patches of light on the ground and on the walls of the huts.

The wound from last evening will continue to limit my physical abilities this morning, but by tomorrow I suspect I should be nearly one hundred percent once again. Ri looks around at the huts and the location where their guide had been sleeping the night before. It is regretable that we will not have the assistence of the guide, but considering he has had little success himself at this site, perhaps he would have just been a burden and another split of treasure to allocate. We know enough of the ruins to continue on ourselves, although finding the exact location may take a bit longer without the guide. With a shrug he seems to dismiss the guide. Shall we?

Humble Master

The walls of the stone building are not masonry but rather seem to be large slabs of perfectly cut stone that jut out of the ground. The walls of the building are smooth and there are no windows. A heavy, oak door is set into the wall on the North side of the building. The portal is simple but sturdy and no hinges can be seen. As you press on the door it swing open easily with almost no effort at all and light issues out from inside. Three small, glowing spheres are set into the wall and provide a pale light that perfectly illuminates the entire building.
The inside of the structure is as uniform as the outside. Save the glowing orbs nothing decorates the walls and the ceiling is composed only of wooden crossbeams and thatch. The floor is simple flagstones, laid out in a pattern.

Ri'Anthal steps inside to inspect closer. He moves close to one of the light orbs and attempts to pry it out of the wall. Next he looks around the room for an exit/tunnel/etc.

What is Ri's best estimate for the time that these ruins have existed and been abandoned? I was under the impression it's been a long time, but based on the state of the glade and the building I am assuming I misinterpretted and it's been a much shorter time.

Does Ri have any idea what caused the buildings to be abandoned by the inhabitants?

OOC
The Mage War ended only a few years ago but the Grey Mages had begun their exodus a while before then. The buildings were probably abounded by the Grey Mages when they felt it was time to move on. You don't have enough information to accurately pinpoint when they left (though you will probably find out latter).

While searching the floor Roo finds a flagstone that seems out of place somehow. Feeling around it Roo finds that there is a hidden catch built into the flagstone.
