View Full Version : Casting Defensivly & Readied Action??!?!

A Mage is surrounded on 3 sides by PCs (Rogue, Bard & Priest). 15 feet away a second Priest readies an action to shoot the Mage with a crossbow if he starts casting. The Mage then starts casting defensively.

Readied action goes off and.... what results? Does the Mage make 2 checks(damage dealt and defensive cast)? Does the damage add to the Defensive casting roll (our temporary house rule until clarified)? Does the defensively cast spell auto fail?

Help, this is sparking a large argument in our group that I would like to head off quickly.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The priest readied an action to fire on the mage if he casts. So, when he casts, even defensively, the priest gets to fire.

Casting defensively doesn't mean that they get to avoid readied actions for specific events, it just doesn't provoke attacks of opportunity.

So yes, he rolls for the concentration for being hit by the crossbow. And if he succeeds that one, he rolls for casting defensively.

It's two checks. Casting defensively to disallow the AoO's from the people in the mage's face and another check after the crossbow bolt connects (if, of course, it does indeed connect) for the damage dealt.

Hope that helps :).

Thank you both. It does help. Lets hope our minor personal crisis is averted.
