We've all been there folks where we have some magic item and nothing to do with it. So we come up with something to do. Whether take the unbreakable magic weapon to jam a door or hold up a crumbling ceiling or that wonderful decanter of endless water we always find a need for the device.

So my question is with those wonderous items what have you come up with. Prefferably none combat purposes.

I gave my players a homebrew item I call the Ring of Invulnerability. Basically, activating it is a standard action. Once it is activated you are paralyzed, and can take no actions other than to deactivate the ring. Starting with the turn you activate it, the ring deals damage to you equal to the highest hit die you possess. However, you are completely immune to any other harm while it is on.

In typing it out, I just realized the potential for abuse depending on what type of action it is to activate it. If it's a free action, there is nothing stopping someone from making an attack, moving, then activating it at the end of their turn to avoid attack damage. As it is, I think it might be okay. So far, they have basically used it as a ring of Feather Fall--taking one hit die of damage is better than the actual damage of falling 100 feet.

About the only abuse-potential item I think I've made is the Deadman's Violin, that converts Perform (Violin) checks into being able to control undead. I basically made the bard one of the most overpowered characters.

I'd actually like some advice on...such creative use of magic items.

I'm running a horror-esque game (Rippers) where the party wizard specializes in Things That Used To Be Human and grafting monster bits onto people. He's got an heirloom, a large tome called Satan's Bedtime Stories. It has seemingly infinite pages which won't stay in order and which detail the transformation of humans into other things (vampires, werewolves, deep ones, etc). It's not good for your sanity and can cause rather vivid hallucinations if you fail your will save (as two of the other players found out the hard way).

The party was busy retrieving some legal documents and the wizard just put them into a locked, metal briefcase (someone else has the key) when he got hit with a Suggestion to "Destroy the papers".:smallamused:

So he begins EATING HIS BOOK.:smalleek:
That is not an intended usage!

He reasoned that the pages are infinite, so he's not going to cause any real damage to the book. However, this is such an unorthodox approach that I had to end the game a bit early so I could meditate on what would happen.

I'm currently planning on making the book the remains of its author and having the wizard get possessed for the rest of the combat. I'm not sure if I want him to be a friend, an enemy, or a frienemy. Anyone have any suggestions?

Simple the book is delicious. Sure he doesn't have to keep eating it but he can keep eating it. There'll be no side effects but it's so delicious. The pringles of books.

That's kind of disturbing, given that the book appears to be made of people :smalleek:

On the other hand, "addicted to eating book" has a nice ring on a character sheet

Given my love of all things Transformation related, why not have eating the book's pages be sort of addictive as mentioned before, but as he does so he slowly turns into a monster. Not just any monster mind you, but an entirely new category of monster, one specially created to fufill a specific archetypal horror "nitche" like the others you mentioned.

Hey, it'd make sense with what the book does.

Everyone's expecting him to transform, so I can't just do that.
But I think the slow transformation will do it. A page here, a page there. Slow drain on Sanity. Then on a failed Guts check...:smallfurious:

That sounds really cool! What are the stats of the item?

It was a major relic that was basically a plot macguffin so I didn't bother with sell stats or how to make it. And I didn't bother to make a "this check gets you this" kind of thing, because I tend to base the check on the situation (simple command vs original command, whose been dominating them, etc) rather than a specific number. So, I guess I really only have the concept of the Deadman's Violin.

haha, I had a similar thought: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dfZ9BXaNyE

[Edit: And I notice Zahhak has ninja'd me :P The same artist has done a cover of the skyrim theme with someone called peter hollands, which features a clash of bow against sword, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=BSLPH9d-jsI&feature=endscreen]

I've always wanted to make a bard based on the concept. Google (images) "blood scythe violin" for some epic related bard artwork.

My own "funny idea" was using a triket that opened small portals between (any) two locations I choose to flood the throne room of some big bad with lava. Made for an awesome fight, actually.

I once had a ring that allowed you to wear one extra ring. Conned some big bad into buying it in exchange for freedom. The DM had given it to me some time previously and only realized what it was after I gave it back to him. Hilarity ensued :P

Oh, I can arange that, but I've also got a big chart from the pirate setting for what happens when players get too drunk at a bar :smallamused:

laying a Dragonlance campaign I had a kender with this belt that everytime I would put it on I would get some random physical change. It was kind of a cursed item and kind of not. Once I put it on My name appeared on the buckle of the belt and it would affect no one else. One time It might give me horns. I take off the belt and put it on, The horns vanish but I lose an arm. Take it off and on again my arm appears again and I grow wings....etc The DM hadn't planned for me/us to use it all the time sort of thing but it became one of the most popular items in our group. Eventually the DM made a bunch of rules like how long I had to wait before changing the belt. A bunch of charts to see exactly what the change would be, etc.

One time we had a bag or some such thing, every time we would draw an item from it, the drawn item would be some common item that was totally useless for the situation. Except we always managed to find some sort of use for it. It eventually became a challenge for the Dm to make up some usless item we couldn't actually find a use for. He never could come up with one lol

Maybe you could enchant it with a bunch of minor universally-useful abilities and save the big expensive enchantments for the specialised rings. I'm not sure what the rules on enchanting magic items are, but there are some +whatever abilities that you can add to a +1 gauntlet for cheap instead of adding them to your +5-equivalent main weapon.
