(That's pronounced "Lay-Tek" if you didn't know, btw)

Anyone know a good place to get a copy of LaTeX? I don't need anything hardcore, I just wanted a place I could keep my math notes that would look neater than my handwriting and isn't MS word. I have Windows 7.

Thanks all.

The LaTeX website tells you how. (http://latex-project.org/ftp.html)

Thank you, I knew that though. LaTeX is freeware and there are a lot of different versions and varieties, depending on what you're looking for. I was just kind of looking for something simple enough to get me through Calc III, but the original is probably going to include a lot of stuff I don't need.

Thanks though.

I did not know this! Thank you for the knowledge, Comrade!

LyX (http://www.lyx.org/) is set up kind of like a Word Processor - I know a few students here that use it and it's fairly well-supported. I hope that it meets your needs.

I use TexWorks (http://www.tug.org/texworks/)on Windows, and I couldn't be happier with it.

On android I use VerbTex (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=verbosus.verbtex)to edit and TexPortal (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lah.texportal&hl=en)to compile, all for free. I do a lot of LaTex and this combination was a dream.

Here's a good tutorial, with lots of examples (http://www.forkosh.com/mimetextutorial.html). There's also this (http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Wiki/index.php/LaTeX:Examples), which has source files for you to look at and experiment with; just copy them into TexWorks and compile them in one click. For your own notes: just write up your notes into a tex document in TexWorks and you're good to go.

Hope some of this is useful, if you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to ask =)

Not a problem. There are different versions that are focused for different needs, some cut things out so they don't take up as much space, some add things to work better with certain math subjects, etc.

Thanks folks, I'll look at downloading one of these in a minute

Thanks. I should be OK on actually understanding the input because I've spent some time working on/insulting the math articles on different wiki sites, which use LaTeX, its really just a matter of finding a place I can get the software.

I haven't spent a lot of time with LaTeX (also pronounced LAH-tek) in Windows. IIRC Cygwin has an option to install LaTeX for you and that covered everything I needed.

IIRC the "X" in LaTeX is actually a chi.

I've also found TeXnicCenter (http://www.texniccenter.org/) to be pretty useful.

I personally use MiKTeX (http://miktex.org) with TeXMaker (http://www.xm1math.net/texmaker/) as my editor. I like TeXMaker quite a bit, but I've never tried any other editor.

I use MathType (http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathtype/) - works great for me. There's a trial period with the full program and it goes to a simpler version after the time is up. I never bothered updating; the simple version works great.
