I was looking at TDC (Crab Battle!!!) and I noticed that it has a strength of 22 but has a bonus on its attacks of 9. I thought natural weapons only got 1.0 strength to damage, which should be 6. Am I missing something?

TDC? not getting the acronym.

It's the crab (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fw/20040221a)from The Far Corners of the World. It's hilariously strong for a CR 3 critter, and is even funnier because of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mHKHKR8x6A)video.

Nah, the stat block is right. It has this majig: "Powerful Claws (Ex): A monstrous crab always applies 1.5 times its Strength modifier to damage inflicted with its claws. Additionally, it gains a +4 racial bonus on grapple checks."

Somehow I missed that. Now I really want to play an awakened one and take levels of Totemist...

Stormwrack has more reasonable versions of giant crabs - they come in multiple sizes, and only have 20ft move speed, so you can at least run away from one. They do get better Constrict IIRC though.

I used one of those in my seafaring campaign. A shipboard saboteur was fleeing the PCs, and he summoned a giant crab as a diversion.

I think it lasted maybe two rounds. Great fun for the PCs, but quite a disappointment for the DM. (Not to mention my beguiler.)

Summons are generally not strong combatants on their own - the creature CRs are roughly equal to the spell's level, which quickly falls behind. As a DM, you have the luxury of dropping a better crab on them with no explanation given. :smallwink:

Well, the crab served its purpose, which was to delay the PCs just long enough for the beguiler to get out of sight and down another deck. The PCs just couldn't resist the distraction.
