Stupid Question about Alertness

Suppose my character has a familiar that grants Alertness. If this said character also had the Item Familiar feat from Complete Arcana, which also grants alertness, what would happen? Would only one alertness apply?

You would have both feats, but they're the same effect so they don't stack.
