So I've played 4e once or twice before.
But I've always avoided Essential characters, simply cause I don't like the restrictions they have in power selection.

Recently I have become interested in the Mage however.
I'd love to play one.
I was just wondering is there anyway beside the School of Magic Feat tree to gain access to the mage while having a more expansive list of powers...like the Arcanist power chooses?

The Mage can choose all of the Arcanist powers and vice versa, so long as it's a Wizard Cantrip or power with a level.
