So quick question for you guys. RAW doesn't seem to have an official ruling on it (and if there is one, I haven't found it.)

A BB Magus' Black Blade is a sentient weapon that seems to exist, in all respects, like any other sentient weapon except it's tied in with some specific class features. it's also not made normally--it just comes into being all of a sudden by virtue of the party having a BB magus.

So what happens when the magus dies? RAW does mention that the weapon refuses to use its magus abilities, and functions as a masterwork weapon, but does it just fade away or does it become a non-"Black Blade" sentient weapon, etc. etc.?

What do you guys think?

It just refuses to behave as a magical weapon. It is still technically an intelligent weapon, so there may be some way to trick it so it would act magical again... Don't know about it though, but hey! Free sword!

Not to mention an epic DM plot device.

In short, it's whatever you want. You can say it is a powerful magic item but you have to dedicate yourself to bonding with it and unlocking it (class levels). You can use it as a sort of Ancestral Relic, as found in BOED.
You can use it as a sort of familiar.

In my Mystara campaign we have a Bladebound magus. I ruled his sword is a remnant from an ancient high-tech society gifted to the Luddite elves to prove technology was awesome. When the civilization blew up, the magical radiation warped it to a magical item, but it hasn't realized this, or that its civilization is long gone. It continually tries to convince its wielder that "see, technology is awesome, it can do everything magic can do and more".

UMD that beotch?

Warlocks would be happy to. Or, if the weapon proves too unwieldy (alignment, and Ego), he can whisper sweet words of destruction to it.
