There's a spell that I vaguely remember seeing somewhere, but I can't find it now. It's cast on a group of allies, and has the effect of linking their senses together, giving them some sort of bonus (on spot checks? Listen? Initiative?) that scaled with the number of people in the group. I think it was a ranger spell. Does anyone know what it might have been?

Nope. Useful spell, but not the one OP is thinking about.
@ question:
Linked Perception, Player's Handbook II. Ranger 1/Druid 2. Don't forget to count any animal companions, familiars, etc when you're figuring out how many 'allies' you have in the effect.

Yup, tyckspoon, that's it, thanks. I mistakenly thought it might have some other effect, too (nobody surprised if anyone was not surprised, or something like that), but I didn't realize that the bonus to Listen/Spot was that large. That's going to be a tough bar to clear, in the perception vs. stealth arms race.
