Well I can't for the life of me remember where that section was with the basic rules on how well you can see in what areas of illumination. If I recall there were two levels of darkness. One near the light where you can see normal, and one towards the edge of the light where you couldn't quite before reaching the part where you can't see things. Anyone remember where this was? (I can't shake the feeling it was PHB or DMG, but I think I'm paging over it or something...)

You're looking for page 164 in the PHB. For a torch it's see clearly out to 20 feet. 21-40 feet is "shadowy" which gives everything in there concealment, and beyond that is dark, effectively blind.

If you have Low Light Vision, these numbers are doubled.

This is a small note for online DM, roll20 has an enhanced lighting effect that is downright amazing. made my DM life so much easier.
