Thaumaturgist Planar Cohort and LA -

I know LA - usually means that a creature may not be used as a race for a PC, but does this rule preclude an Outsider with LA - from being chosen as a Cohort for this ability?

If I'm right and it can't, what are best options for this ability besides just strapping class levels on a LA 0 Outsider?

You're correct, a Thamaturgist's Planar Cohort still needs an LA.

Succubi are pretty decent for their LA. A Dretch or Abyssal Skulker with Fiend of Possession levels could be fun.

Dvati Fiends of Possession can be brilliant fun. I think you get both of them with it, but they're Dvati, so go wear a hard hat when you ask your DM if you can use them.
