I have vague memories of a 3rd party system where, rather than having classes like mystic theurge, caster levels from different base classes stacked. I don't remember all the details, but I think full casting classes were 1:1. So, for instance, a Clr 4/ Wiz 3 would have a caster level of 7 for either cleric or wizard spellcasting. However, the maximum spell level you could cast could not exceed the number of levels you had in the associated class. So a Clr 4/Wiz 3 could cast 4th level cleric spells, but only 3rd level wizard spells. Something like that, anyway.

Does this ring any bells? What 3rd party supplement did it appear in? How did classes like bard and ranger contribute to caster level?

The only thing that comes to mind is the dual class progression from the AD&D. But it doesn't seem to be what you're looking for though.

cleric/wizards were awsum!
