View Full Version : Cheap but cool magic items for lowlevel rogue + tank?

Hi
I am the DM of a group which consists of a wizard, a rogue and a monk/barbarian tank, all level 5.
The world is low magic but I am trying to amp it up slowly. Thus I want to provide the rogue and the tank with some magic items that are none too expensive or complicated, but would be of aid in their struggles. (I don't need anything for the wizard, he's already overpowered.)
Can you guys help me with ideas for magic items? Anything will do, they have NO magic stuff at all at this point, (except for a +1 greatsword.) I specially want to help the rogue since he feels underpowered and is kind of timid, and I'd like to help him have more fun and be more active during fights. The rogue mostly uses daggers.

Your help is much appreciated

Here (http://www.brilliantgameologists.com/boards/?topic=4400.0)'s a nice little guide to all sorts of relatively cheap items, both for utility, defense and offense.

There was another similar guide for alchemical items and stuff on this forum, but damned if I can remember the name or the author.

Edit: Aha! Shax's Indespensible Haversack (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8235865#post8235865), by Darrin. Worth a look through all those lists. Very useful.

I love that guide so much. I tend to post it any time someone asks for items. It gives advice on something few guides do, and it has a higher writing quality than most handbooks. Since you already posted the two super cheap item guides, I'll post the two cost efficient item guides. The first is the lists of necessary magic items (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187851), which is a nice blueprint for the wealth by level design of most characters, and the second is Bunko's bargain basement (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=350.0), which is just a list of magic items that are cheap for their effect. Both guides have some items that are out of your likely price range, but there are some pretty cheap things in both of them.

Thanks. You're awesome! And so are the guides, by the look of it!

Thanks again: Am currently considering Amulet of tears, Belt of battle, Mantle of second Chances, Cloak of Weaponry, Bracers of the Hunter, Silent Portal Disk & Gloves of Taarnahm the vigilant (!)

I will absolutely look into quite a few of your links Gavinfoxx, as the group have no healer and quite a few of the lists you link to, are all about healing without healers. Nice.

'Wand of Lesser Vigor' (if someone has umd maxxed) or 'Wand of Cure Light Wounds' (if someone has it on their spell list) and 'Belt of Healing' are the main ones.

MIC has lots of cheap 3 charge daily items that let you do something a few times a day by spending charges.

Low level rogues tend to need to move around a lot to get into the appropriate flanking position, so something like the Acrobat Boots could help him get into the flanking position more easily. Something like the

The Amulet of Teamwork makes flanking bonuses a little better.

The barb might definitely like the Amulet of Tears. The Boots of the Battle Charger could be a nice little something without adding too much power/magic.

The Belt of Battle is definitely a very nice thing to have, but it's definitely a lot higher on the magic/cost scale then then other stuff you've been talking about.

It gives advice on something few guides do, and it has a higher writing quality than most handbooks.

Thank you. That made my day.

For the rogue, I would recommend:

Head:

Helm of Tactics (2000 GP, MIC). 3/day, for 10 rounds, all allies within 60' get a +2 bonus to melee damage when flanking. There's another effect if you're a Marshall, but it's almost as useless as taking levels in Marshall.

Scout's Headband (3400 GP, MIC). +2 competence bonus on Spot checks, and some charges to activate some vision-based effects, inlcuding true seeing for 1 minute.

Face:

Third Eye Surge (2100 GP, MIC). 3 charges, +2 insight bonus on Str/Dex-based checks and weapon damage for 1 round.

Throat:

Chronocharm of the Horizon Walker (500 GP, MIC). 1/day, swift action to move up to half your speed.

Hand of the Mage (900 GP, DMG). Pick locks/pockets without getting your hands dirty.

Shoulders:

Cloak of Elemental Protection (1000 GP, MIC). 1/day, immediate action to gain a la carte energy resistance 10.

Vanisher Cloak (2500 GP, MIC). 3 charges, up to 12 rounds of invisibility for yourself, or hide up to three allies for 2 rounds.

Transposer Cloak (6000 GP, MIC). 3/day swap positions with an ally. A wand of benign transposition does the same thing, but the cloak only takes a swift action.

Arms:

Armbands of Elusive Action (800 GP, MIC). 1/day get out of triggering an AoO. For those moments when getting the heck out of melee may mean getting out of a TPK.

Hands:

Brute Guantlets (500 GP, MIC). Another cheap way to buff melee damage. 3/day, swift action to give yourself a +2 morale bonus on damage for a round.

Gloves of Object Reading (3000 GP, MIC). I have not yet driven a DM insane with this item, but oh I so want to try someday (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8235936&postcount=8). Nearly unlimited information at your fingertips, for whatever you can get your fingers on.

Gloves of the Uldra Savant (3100 GP, MIC). Ray of frost at will, which is a ranged touch attack you can sneak attack with. 3/day imbue a melee weapon with the frost property for 5 rounds isn't too shabby, either.

Ring#1:

Ring of the Four Winds (2000 GP, MIC). 4/day, immediate action to get a +2 deflection bonus to your AC or a feather fall effect.

Ring#2:

Stormfire Ring (4000 GP, MIC). One of my all-time favorites. 5/day, area effect that negates invisibility/concealment and also does 1d6 electricity damage for 5 rounds, *no save*. If you're patient, that's 25d6 electricity damage per day, no attack roll, no save, add a little obscuring mist or darkness so you and your allies get concealment but your target doesn't.

Torso:

Vestment of Many Styles (500 GP, Races of Eberron). This item isn't entirely clear on what it does (any style/color? can you request certain outfits?), but it does give a +2 circumstance bonus on Disguise checks, which stacks with disguise kits and just about anything else you can do with disguise.

Waist:

Healing Belt (750 GP, MIC). AKA the "What were they smoking when they priced this?" Belt.

Feet:

Anklets of Translocation (1400 GP, MIC). 2/day swift action teleport up to 10'. Great way to get into flanking position for a full attack or get out of a grapple.

Boots of Tracklessness (11000 GP, MIC). Very expensive for your current campaign, but this should be on every rogue's wish list: 7 rounds of greater invisibility, or as I prefer to think of it, 7 rounds of pure sneak attack murder.

Healing Belt was intentionally underpriced to make it worthwhile and easy... they mention that in MIC...

Thanx, thanx, thanx!!!
With all of these suggestions I'll have plenty of boons to toss at them in the future.

The party will be very happy (first time they get any really cool stuff!) and I will feel like a good-aligned omnipotent gracious DM, and feel very good about myself.

And bonus: The group will suddenly be very motivated to fetch me coffee and candy the rest of the campaign! Ill be fat by winter. Everybody wins :-)
