Elena Greene: You recently won a scratch-and-win lottery ticket, obtaining a promotional trip to see in person the unveiling of a new design by the Oliver-Kendall Automotive Company in Ontario, one they claimed would ‘revolutionize the way people drive’. The event would be on television, but a few lucky winners would get to be there. You remember this included a stay at the Dancing Buffalo hotel, which included a pool and a kitchen known for its excellent homemade meals. Overall, it sounded like a nice (free) distraction. Plus, it would only take a couple of days, so it didn’t include all the usual hassle of planning a vacation. In any case, you are now arriving by car in the town of Linhill, Ontario; hometown of the founders Oliver and Kendall of the aptly named Oliver-Kendall company.

Jonathan Locke: A few days ago, you received a phone call from one Grant Gooden, a man who served along with your father in the war. You vaguely recall meeting him a few times. Grant is suffering from cancer in his lungs, and is unlikely to survive any operations due to his age and health. The dying man claims to have something to tell you, something important related to your father. He is in a hospital in Linhill, Ontario, where he’s lived since his wife died. Since you lack a license, you have traveled there by train. The train is now arriving at the train station.

William Drake: You also received a phone call from Grant Gooden. It seems Mr. Gooden once lived near your family and had your father investigate the theft of a memento from the war. The case was never solved, and the object never found. Now Grant is dying of cancer, and wishes you to continue the investigation based on a new lead he has uncovered. The old soldier said he was at a hospital in Linhill, Ontario where he’s been living for three years. Arriving by bus, you find yourself at a small diner where those getting on or off could wait for their ride here or there and have some coffee.

Everyone: You all remember the town being eerily quiet, with nobody around- except those few who arrived via train and bus along with Jonathan and William, respectively. These are the last things you all remember. After that it simply blacks out. You do not know how long it has been, but each of you awakens in a separate hotel room. Each room contains a double bed against the south wall (on which each of you awakens), a nightstand with a touch lamp, a closet on the north side of the room, a window on the west side of the room with the curtains shut, and a door on the east side of the room.

Elena: In your room there is also a plain wooden chair in the northwest corner, propped against the closet door. Your room’s lamp is turned on at a low setting when you awaken.

Jonathan: The lamp on your nightstand is turned off, and you can barely see.

William: Your lamp is at the high setting, illuminating the room well. There is a yellow sticky note on the inside of the door to the room, though you cannot make out the writing from here.

ra88’s character would have also won a trip to see the Oliver-Kendall event, but he will not be here for now due to IRL interference. He will be introduced when the time comes.

William: The note on the door reads "keys are in the nightstand stay inside" in penmanship so messy you take a moment to understand what it says. It seems whoever wrote the note was in a hurry. Taking stock of your surroundings, you don't note anything else out of the ordinary.

Johnathan: With the light on you notice something you missed before, a pile of five blue towels in the corner. Upon opening the curtains you see only the darkness of night, lit here and there by dim streetlights. On the other side of the street below there is a convenience store that appears to still be open. You seem to be about three floors up.

Elena: The closet door is unlocked. Inside is a handgun duct taped to the wall, along with a yellow sticky note. Due to poor lighting and penmanship, you cannot read what the note says.

Elena: Lacking a Knowledge skill directly related to weaponry, a Repair check at -2 will tell you what type of handgun it is, reflecting your experience with general machinery and the gun experience your Shooting skill entails.

Locke's stomach begins to rumble and he realize he hasn't eaten in who knows how long. He rummage through my things looking for money or a candy bar, scanning over the drawers and the closet for any change to head over to the corner store across the way.

Johnathan: Searching your pockets, you find some wads of lint. The nightstand and the closet yield much more bountiful results. The top drawer of the nightstand contains a small pocket flashlight with a wristband to prevent it from getting lost, as well as a stack of blank yellow sticky notes and a blue pen. The second drawer contains eight pennies. The closet contains a mop and a wheeled mop bucket, despite the flooring in the room being carpet. There is also a pile of removable shelves from this closet and- judging by the number of them- several others. They're just lying on the floor of the closet for some reason.

Elena & William: As each of you exits, you see one another in the hallway. The hallway is dark, and only the light from your rooms pours into it. You appear to be two rooms apart, with two the doors to two other rooms between yours'. Neither of you know who the other is.

There are five rooms on each side of the hallway. On the other side of the hall are 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25. On your side are 26 (Elena), 27 (Johnathan), 28 (Locked Door), 29 (William), and 30. 21 and 26 are near the elevator and stairwell, with 25 and 30 being on either side of the dead end. RandomWombat

Johnathan: The light bulbs function correctly, helping light up the hallway a little better.

William: Thanks to the new light, you can see much more easily here. The floor counter above the elevator says the building has four floors and a basement, and that the elevator is currently on the second floor. It appears to be working, but you can't really know for sure from the outside. On the decorative end table at the end of the hall, placed between the door to the elevator and the one to the stairwell, you find a blue cigarette lighter.

Elena: Plugging in the lamp, you light up the room. You can now check around without Johnathan's flashlight. The note stuck to the nightstand reads, in red pen and much better penmanship:

When the light shines in the woman's face you only briefly see that her face appears withered and wrinkled, and the dark blonde bangs hanging down over her forehead have bits of grey in them. They have the same shambling gait and uncontrollable shivering as the woman before them.

Johnathan: It's difficult to make out in the dim light, since it goes down rather than up, but you make out a pair of blue eyes above one of the lights across the street. Everyone: William rolls down his passenger window and climbs half out.

William: On top of the car is a nearly human figure. Its humanoid form is covered in pale skin, visible in the light of the streetlight as they pass by onto the grass. It would be human if not for the glowing blue eyes glaring at you and the fangs bared in its mouth. Wrapped around its body is some sort of white and grey half-cloak, but it stops before the arms. A ragged mane of pale white hair falls about its head.

You grab it by the arm braced against the car, and pull with all your might. With the arm stabilizing it pulled out from under it, it easily topples over and you fling it off the car onto the grass. It is dragged along the ground by William as the car slowly moves forward.

Everyone: The 'cloak' unfurls, revealing itself to actually be a pair of large white moth wings with a mottled grey pattern scattered across the surface. The creature is otherwise wearing only a pair of blue jeans.

Elena: You duck behind a decorative shrub and remain still. The creature narrows its eyes, looking around. Eventually it flies over you and around the building, towards the injured one. Unfortunately they're in the way of the safest route back inside; the alternative is climbing the fire escape and going in a window.

John&William: In the parking lot, you see a group of the shamblers fighting over the flashlight. A mothman overseeing them looks up as the two of you hurry to the door. The injured one behind you is also joined by two more, although they do not immediately pursue. Fortunately, you make it inside before any collaborative effort is made to chase you, but you aren't sure the glass doors will hold if they decide to try breaking in. The lobby is as you left it, but a man comes out from the hallway to the elevator and stairwell. His features are difficult to make out in the dark, but he gestures for you to follow and goes back into the stairwell.

John: The doors can be locked from the inside, but it would need a key. The front desk is fortunately not built into the floor, and could be pushed against the doors to hold them shut, but it would take more than one person.

Will, help me with this desk, would you? I don't trust those doors. John begins to budge the desk to get an early start on Will.

John: Even under stress (or perhaps thanks to the stress), you summon up reserves of strength you didn't think you had. Bracing your feet against the floor and pushing with all your might, you slowly begin to move the desk along on your own. It makes an awful scraping sound and makes marks the floor, but you manage to get it to where it blocks the double doors from opening.

The glass windows might still break, but anything coming in that way will take time, noise, and effort. Not to mention having to climb through broken glass.

"Phew" John says trying to catch his breath. "Well that was fun. Come on we're burning day...lig... Do you have any idea how long we've been up? Or what time it is?" He says quizzically. "I wonder whats gonna happen to those creatures once the sun rises..."

Using DarkOrange now because Dark Green is almost the same as green (Which suddenly started appearing pale and unreadable on my new monitor)

Edit: This has been edited a few times because I cant find a color thats easy to see and doesn't burn my eyes.

Elena: You are still hiding behind a decorative shrub behind the hotel.

John&William: When you enter the darkness of the stairwell, the man begins putting the padlock and chains back in place. "The girl still out there? They're going to be all over the parking lot soon, so she'll just have to find another way in." He locks the setup with his own key and sighs, "If she climbs the fire escape we'll need to open a window for her. This way." The mystery man begins walking up the stairwell to the second floor.

Elena: You jump up onto the ladder. The impact makes some noise, but the creatures have by now gone around the building towards the front, chasing after the others. The fire escape passes by windows on the second, third, and fourth floors. There is no roof access. The windows also seem to open only from the inside, unless pried open with proper tools.

John: The man takes something off of his belt and clicks it on, revealing itself to be one of those older, clunky flashlights. It doesn't do much, but the group doesn't have to feel its way up the stairs anymore. "My partner and I have no idea what's going on. We found you all on a supply run and brought you back, but we had to barricade the tunnel in the basement. The creatures spotted us and followed us back. Too bad, it was our best asset." He opens the door to the second floor hallway, where the lights are on. The doors are closed so the light isn't visible through any windows, and by the door at the end is another man. Both can now be clearly seen.

The man leading you has short, dirty blond hair and no facial hair. The second man has messy black hair and a bit of stubble. Both are wearing business attire, but are wearing only the black suit jackets and pants, having discarded the white undershirts. "All we know is the twitchy things like lights and bright colors. Ollie, the girl might need to come in through the window."

"Right man, got it," the second man turns off the lights in the hallway and enters the room at the end.

Elena: The window opens from the inside of the dark room after you see some movement. "Hey. In here, quick."

Elena: "I don't think so. Or, not movie zombies, anyways. You don't need headshots. C'mon," the man leads you back into the second floor hallway.

With the door shut again, the hallway lights are turned back on. The three of you are gathered there, along with the other two. The black-haired man seems nervous, while the other is more confident. All the same, it is the nervous one who starts the conversation, "So, uh, I think introductions are in order. Name's Oliver Collins.

"And I am Kendall Singer. Once everyone is situated, I'll explain what we know," states the brighter haired man.

John: Your analysis shows that Kendall, the stoic man, is in fact more shaken; he's just better at hiding it. You can see it in his expression that it's taking real effort to remain calm and under control. The other man just seems naturally absentminded and jumpy.

Elena: "Nope. Sorry. We couldn't find any ammo for that gun on our last run, and since then we've been barricading the basement."

Everyone: "According to my watch, it has been three days since this happened. It's impossible to tell time, because since this started the entire town has been in perpetual night. I don't know how, so don't bother asking. Trying to leave just makes you wander back in from some other direction," Kendall paces back and forth down the hall as he explains, "We don't know how the people out there ended up how they are, but they seem to be looking for sources of light. Around the largest groups of them, you find those... mothmen."

Oliver cuts in to add, "I think the moths are shepherding them together. It's not that you don't see them without a big group, it's that you don't see big groups without them."

"In any case, that's all we know. And we've got bigger problems to deal with. When we found you three unconscious in the street and dragged you back here, some of the mothmen followed us. There was a tunnel between the basement here and the cellar of one of the houses nearby. We were using it for supply runs, but now we had to barricade it to keep them out. And now this place has their attention. We're going to get out of here soon, or we'll be boxed in." Kendall turns to face all of you. His stoic expression is visible worried, now. "Any ideas?"

William thinks for a moment about why he was there in the first place.

"The Hospital. How far is the hospital from here? Would it make a good place to hideout."

He looks at John "Maybe the guy who called us here knows something."

"It has several entrances. That could be good or bad depending on how things work out. Plus, we might need to clear it out. But, if we get it, we'll have food from the snack machines and access to medicinal supplies," Kendall leaned against the wall of the hallway and crossed his arms, tapping a finger on his elbow.

Oliver raises a hand, "Um, I have an old coat pistol, but only a couple bullets. My father was a collector. His house was looted pretty early after this all went down, but we could look there."

"Eh never know, if what you guys say is true we can just get a fast car and drive down a street at 100 miles per hour, stick a light on the road, and just run them down as we drive and get teleported to another street." He chuckles at his own joke to lighten the mood.

"That would clear out plenty of the shamblers, but every moth in the city would be all over us." Kendall pushed off the wall and returned to pacing, "Whatever we're doing, let's decide fast. While they're focused on the other ways in, we can get out using the fire escape."

Everyone: William leads the group down the fire escape with his knife, reaching the ground first. The rest of you follow suit. Oliver and Kendall state that the hospital is past the convenience store, and Oliver's house is along the road to the left of the hotel entrance. If the group is going to the house to equip themselves, they'll need to avoid attracting attention from the moths in the parking lot.

Two minute map to illustrate what I mean. There are some other buildings in the blank areas that aren't marked as the soccer field, but nothing specifically important right now.

"I dunno, those moths have pretty sharp eyes..."

It seems one of you will need to make the final call about what tactics you're using to get there.

Everyone: With a group consensus for taking the longer route and avoiding view of the parking lot completely, Oliver and Kendall lead the way. The street northeast of the hotel leads east, in the direction of the more residential area. Though it is difficult to see far in the dark, the periodically placed streetlights provide a sufficient guide, and the buildings they pass by seem to be mostly small businesses right now.
