Creating a Northern Lich

A Northern or Ice Lich is a template that can be applied to any living animal creature, hence forth known as the base creature

To become a Ice Lich, the base creature must undergo a ritual that replaces their mortal heart with one of pure carved ice. The ritual takes 2d4 weeks, costs 12,000 xp and 1,000 gold (including components). The caster must be able to cast, gust of wind, ray of frost, cone of cold, chill metal and animate dead.

A Ice lich has all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Size and Type
The creature's type changes to undead with an (COLD) sub-type Do not recalculate base attack bonus, saves, or skill points. Size is unchanged.

Hit Dice
Increase all current and future Hit Dice to d12s if higher.

Undead Traits

Special Qualities
A Ice Lich retains all the base creature’s special qualities and gains those described below.

Aura of Cold
a ice lich gives off a 20 feet aura that chills the air around her, all who enter are subject to harsh cold conditions and a constant effect of chill metal.

Icey claws
An Ice LIch gains a natural 1d4 unarmed damage +2d6 cold damage. This counts as a +2 weapon for purposes of damage reduction

Flash Frozen Rend
upon successfully hitting with 2 claw attacks the wound immediently freezes and shatters into ice dealing 1d6 con damage.

Freezing touch
upon a successful touch attack a Lich can freeze a person. Unless they make a Fort save equal to 10+Ice Lich's HD, the person is covered in a coat of ice for 2d6 rounds. durring that time their land speed is halfed and they take double damage from physical attacks.

Breath of the Frozen North
Every 1d4 rounds an Icelich can breath a cone of 20 by 10 feet that deals 6d6 cold damage (Reflex save 10+ HD). If hit the target must make a fort save (10+hd) if they fail by 5 or less they are under the effect of Freezing touch (see above) if they fail by more they are frozen in a block of ice.

Spell like abilities
get the following spell like abilities and can chose to cast as either a Sorceror or Wizard.
at will: ray of frost
once per day: Create undead,
3 times per day: control undead, crushing dispair, cone of cold, ice storm,
5 times per day: deep slumber, wall of ice, spiderclimb (icey walls only),
at will: curse water, ray of frost, gust of wind

Ability adjustment
A Icelich immediently gains some benefits from their opperation due to the nature of the mechanical heart

Weakness
An Ice Lich cannot be killed normally. If reduced to -10 hd their body crumbles into a pile of ice and snow. However, they will form a new body out of the surronding ice and cold wind in 1d4+1 weeks. The only way to kill one is to find the chunk of ice that acts as their heart and melt it into water and then make sure the water is allowed to evaporate (or alternativly be consecrated via bless water). If nothing else is done the heart of ice, even if shattered or damage, will reform and thus reform the Ice Lich. If an Ice Lich is introduced to too great temperatures their heart of ice may melt and they will evaporate into a pile of muddy snow.

You should specify exactly what is necessary to melt an Ice Lich (ie define "great temperatures"). Also, how much of the original heart needs to be recovered? If, say, it gets smashed into a hundred pieces, how many pieces would need to be melted and consecrated to permanently kill this guy?

Temperatures above freezing it will melt in about an 1d4X30 minutes naturally. Boiling temperatures (IE fire) will melt it in 2d4 rounds.

Second is up to DM, but I'd put it that you need 90% of it.

So the Ice Lich dies if he leaves a freezing area? What about the Aura of Cold?

no as it's stated the freezing aura keeps the temp around him frosty. exposing him to fire or taking the frozen heart how ever out of the artic will deliver death. If they are slain outside of the artic the Heart of Ice will remain in above freezing temperatures since their Aura of Cold ends...so they're likely to die permently. Hence why most of them would be relucent to be drawn out of their frozen lairs...of icey DOOM

This could make for a very messy enemy, or an immortal ice giant.

Fireball is described to melt gold coins. Surely if an instananeous effect can melt metal, it can turn a lump of ice into steam. One spell wonder?

...water evaporates into water vapor, "steam", not muddy snow.

It's heart wouldn't be vulnerable to a fire ball until the body is destroyed.
