Favored Communionist

"Pelor may speak to you, but he flows through me. His power and I are one and the same." - Xyrrum Nalsi, Favored Communionist of Pelor

All clerics, druids, favored souls, and their ilk gain divine power through faith and the power of the gods. They draw the energy necessary to cast spells from the will of their chosen deity, based on their relative power. But some are different. They can tap directly into the divine flow released by the very presence of a god, immerse themselves in it, and become a force unto themselves, channeling power with ease normally reserved for the deity itself.

Traditionally, favored communionists are found leading churches dedicated to their chosen deity, as such an individual's word is as law as that of their patron. It is not altogether unusual, however, to find them in adventuring groups, seeking out ancient artifacts of significance to the church, or undertaking quests to become ever closer to the being that grants them their gifts.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the favored communionist prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Favored communionists are proficient with all simple weapons, their deity's favored weapon, with all types of armor, and with shields. Certain restrictions on types of gear (such as a druid's inability to wear metal) still apply.

Spells per Day/Spells Known: At each level, a favored communionist gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if he had also gained a level in a divine spellcasting class to which he belonged before adding the prestige class level. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (such as wild shape size bonuses gained by a druid). If he had more than one divine spellcasting class before becoming a favored communionist, he must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day and spells known.

Note that if the favored communionist was previously a cleric, he retains his ability to choose from domain spells for every spell level, using the domains he previously had available to him.

Favored Priest: The ability to draw magic and power directly from your patron deity is no small feat. But it also carries with it a great deal of responsibility. A favored communionist must always be aware of what their deity may feel about a certain course of action, and stay true to the dogma of said god. If a favored communionist ever upsets their deity or acts against the tenants of his faith, he loses all special abilities of the prestige class (excluding the free metamagic feats gained, if any) for one week per class level, or until another member of his faith casts an atonement spell on his, whichever comes first. Depending on how dire the offense was, the atonement spell may fail to work, or even (in truly horrible cases) the favored communionist may never regain their powers.

As an immediate action at any time before performing an act they are uncertain of, a favored communionist may make a Knowledge (religion) check (DC set by the DM depending on how obvious the answer is) in an attempt to tell whether that course of action would anger their deity.

Draw Energy (Su): A favored communionist can call spells directly from their deity at a given moment. In effect, they draw the divine power used to cast their spells and reshape it using the raw energy they already draw from their connection to the deity. Once per day, the favored communionist can replace any 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level spell he has memorized with another spell of the same level. The spell 'traded in' for cannot already have been cast. For spontaneous casters, they can replace one casting of a spell known for the appropriate levels with any cleric or druid spell (as appropriate to their spells known list) of the same level.

At 4th level, the favored communionist can use this ability twice per day, and it can apply to 4th, 5th, and 6th level spells.

At 8th level, the favored communionist can use this ability three times per day, and it can apply to 7th, 8th, and 9th level spells.

Free Metamagic Feat: At 2nd level and again at 9th level, a favored communionist gains a spark of insight from the connection to his deity on how to bend the powers he possesses. He gains a metamagic feat of his choice as a bonus feat. He must still meet the prerequisites of the feat.

Divine Boon (Su): At 3rd level and again at 6th level, the favored communionist gains an extra spell slot/spell per day for a spell level that he has access to of his choice. This extra spell slot is granted as though for a high ability score.

Divine Intervention (Su): Once per day at 5th level, the favored communionist can apply any metamagic feat he knows (so long as it does not alter spell level by more than 3 levels) to one spell as it is cast without increasing its spell level or casting time.

At 7th level, he can use this ability once more per day.

Favored Mortal: A 10th level favored communionist is recognizable to all within the church. The power of his deity radiates off of him like sunlight, and he is a force to be reckoned with for the enemies of his patron. A favored mortal gains a +2 competence bonus on all Charisma-based interaction checks when dealing with followers of his deity.

Domain Mastery: A 10th level favored communionist gains access to one domain that his deity grants for free, so long as he did not already possess it. All usual rules and benefits inherent in using domains apply, and the favored communionist's levels stack with all divine spellcaster levels for the purposes of determining the domain ability effect and domain spell levels available, even if he does not have cleric levels.
