Alright so first of all hello everyone, this is my first time posting on the site so hope you all could show me the ropes a bit. That said I must make a Pacific Rim campaign. Any advice on where i should start? Im most familiar with 3.5 D&D but so long as i can get a source book to study I can work with basically any system. Any suggestions no matter how small are appreciated.

D20 Future. Simple to convert to if you are familiar with 3.5 they have an entire chapter on mechs. Some workup for High CR creatures to represent the Kaiju. The Drift would be the only part that would have to be done yourself but there are lots of things you could look up for Dream effects, will saves, nWOD changeling dream structures may give an idea or three.

You know what's great about FATE (http://www.faterpg.com/)?

It's so absurdly simple and straightforward that there's almost no house rules compilations out there because the game flexes to shape whatever you need it to do inherently.

You want Drift complications? Aspect compels.

Need to gen the stats for a Kaiju? Come up with a couple descriptive phrases, then write them down. Congratulations, you're ready to go.

may I make a suggestion?

I might not have seen pacific rim, to be honest it doesn't appeal to me, real men drive tanks.

but battletech has a role-play system somewhere, it might take some digging, but it is a feasible thing, it's just a matter of willpower, that and explosions.

It's called Mechwarrior. I've seen it, I've rolled up characters in it, it's not a thing I'd recommend for any reason.

In part because the actual mecha combat is summed up as- "Buy our miniatures game, Battletech!".

If you're looking for a crunchy giant robot game, Mechton Zeta (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/25403/Mekton-Zeta?manufacturers_id=13&it=1) has you covered at less then the cost of a good sandwich.

Failing that, Mutants and Masterminds (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/116671/Mutants-%26-Masterminds-Deluxe-Heros-Handbook?filters=0_0_1400_0_0) allows for a wide spectrum of non-sense while being a good deal less obnoxious then GURPS.

There's d20 Mecha (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/370/d20-Mecha?it=1). Not sure how well the rules work, though.

And some inspiration (http://ffn.nodwick.com/?p=1194). :smallwink:

I have little constructive to add beyond throwing my support beyond FATE. It kicks approximately 98.7% of the ass.

It really reminded me of CthuluTech, though I'm not quite sure thats the feel you are going for.

I disagree.

In a tank you have to weather the hurricane. You have to hunker down and wait until it's over.

In a tank you can't fight the hurricane.

In a tank you can't stand against the hurricane and win.

Stay in your glorified car. I'll be over here, punching Rodan with my rocket fist.

Though, I'm not exactly thrilled with Battletech myself, and hovertanks are always my favorite to bring to mechfights in Starseige. I'm gonna suggest Mutants & Masterminds just like I did in the other thread, but also second FATE.

That said, this is the world-building forum. What should a kaiju vs. mecha setting have? Aliens, kaiju, and mecha, obviously... what else?

Idiot politicians who don't get how sweet giant robots are.
They're always like, "Dear god, do you have any idea how cost prohibitive this **** is?!" and "If you absolutely MUST suplex the monster, would you mind AIMING IT AWAY FROM BUILDINGS?! Just once?!"

Speaking of which, I've been tinkering with the idea of simply providing the mecha and a few other things, along with an island and a deploy vehicle.

That way I can provide them with mecha that are busted down and also need multiple positions.

Mecha 1
Position 1: Can move/make melee attacks
Position 2: Can operate guns and missiles
Position 3: Can operate DamCon/special stuff (cloaking fields and the like)
Mecha 2
Position 1: Can move/make melee attacks
Position 2: Can operate guns and missiles
Position 3: Can operate DamCon/special stuff (cloaking fields and the like)
Maser Truck
Heavy damage dealer
Spotter Truck
Will let mecha acquire firing solutions on non-LOS targets

This way they actually make decisions about what to deploy and where. Unless a player wants to make a kaiju - going to use my previous setting. Just advance it ten years (as it has been nearly ten years since I ran it >_>)

Ahh! I feel so dumb! How could I forget to recommend The Aegis Project (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/96685/The-Aegis-Project)

It sucks that it doesn't cost $5 anymore, but it's still a great giant robot game that could be pretty easy modified for Kaiju warfare.

Aside from that, I've been thinking about a SuperRobot vs Kaiju game where in the Kaiju are manifestations of chaos magic, spawned and mostly sorta controlled by goblins and or witches. Witch goblins.

The steampunk robots of course being civilization's only rational response.
