I end up Dm-ing for two people a lot,any thoughts on best classes for that? Staying alive being a priority.

I'm a fan of Gestalt (see Unearthed Arcana) for such small parties. If that's not allowed, how about a Kobold and Trickery Domain Cloistered Cleric along with a Beguiler/Shadowcraft mage? You can both be super sneaky, handle traps easily, and have incredible magic!

Druid and Kobold Cloistered Cleric

You end up with 3 tanks. (Wildshaped Druid, DMM persist cleric, Animal Companion).
2 Battlefield Controllers.
2 Spell lists for utility.
1 Guy with trapfinding
If needed, armies of animals or armies of undead.

Good at levels 1 through 16, outclassed by wizards at 17+

Seconding gestalt.

I'd also suggest giving them free Wild Cohort or maybe having a Druid. Or some way to get a meat shield.

For single class, I would actually go with a Crusader/Cleric/RKV and a Spellthief/Avenger/Daggerspell caster.

The Rkv deals with survival and healing and daggerspell steals other people's spells and they both feed off the other's tactics.

If gestalt?

+ incarnate on the crusader side

+factotem on the spell thief side.

Make one a divine caster, and the other arcane.

Cleric and Wizard is best, IMO.

Cleric and wizard, and have them pick up hirelings if needed.

Only issue with spellcaster combo is if they run out of spells, their screwed.
Maybe gestalt cleric fighter and wizard rogue.

Meh, if they go all out they won't even run out of spells. Long term buffs and DMM: Persistence can handle the whole spells issue. Heck, the Cleric would have Animate Dead by level 5, and that helps a ton.

One fun party I'm currently playing with is talking about doing gestalt, with the dwarfiest dwarf (Dwarf Fighter 1/Dwarf Paragon 3/Crusader 3//Cleric 6 Gestalt) and the koboldiest kobold (Kobold Sorcerer 6//Rogue 5/Trapsmith 1). That could be fun to play with.

How about this: a party made of The Most Stereotypical Charactors Ever.

Alternatively:
Player 1 any class, leadership at level 6.
Player 2 any class, leadership at level 6.

:)

Actually, that party I was talking about is indeed playing stereotypes. We're now bringing in a gnome Bard 3/Gnome Paragon 3//Gnome Illusionist 6 and a... wolf thingy. I don't think that last player quite got it.

I would have one of them go Bard//Crusader/Paladin (Cleric if you won't let them have a lawful Bard)/Ruby Knight Vindicator, while the other one goes for Ranger/Swordsage//Ardent.
