I'm playing my first online game, and I'm looking for a way to represent our characters on a board. Is there an app or webpage for that?

There's virtual tabletops like MapTool (http://www.rptools.net/).

One person acts as the host, and the other players connect to him. There's also an integrated chat client and dice roller, which might obviate the need for Skype.

I've had some good experiences with Roll20.net. It's free, has a virtual die-roller, lets you create and edit maps, lets the players use tokens you designate to them, you can put up effects like fog of war, there's a chat system, and some other goodies. It's a lot slower than gaming in person (or at least feels that way), but it's worked well enough for my group. I think it could be used pretty well to assist a PbP as well as for real-time gaming.

I'm running a Roll20 game over the summer, and I think I can confirm everything Slipperchicken said. It's free, it's got multi-chat video, it's got a virtual whiteboard, it's got a die roller, it's just... generally nice.

Our group uses GameTable (http://gametableproj.sourceforge.net/) for our game board, it works pretty well, and it's in Java so it can run on anything.

I tried a couple of programs but never were able to start any of them.

Java and Python keeps making me cry.

And even if I would be able to get one to work, I don't think there is much hope that the same program will work for four other people on different computers as well. :smallannoyed:

Roll20 (http://roll20.net/) is a web application. It should run smoothly for most people.

I use google docs for everything. Like that (http://gyazo.com/d22a9467357600913b6ddc617c1d7661).

Roll20. Should cover everything you need, and then some.

If that is too much for you, we have been running our game on a map in a Google Docs spreadsheet in the same share directory as the character sheets, initiative and bonuses sheet, and log. I use rolz.org for the dice rolling. I have yet to figure out how to use roll 20 effectively yet.
