So, quick question. In the vein of the favourite abberations thread I saw the other day, what is everyone's favourite underdark monster? I want em across all levels, low to high, and across all environments.

Also, preferably not the basic 'drow mindflayer aboleth'.

So, what is everyone's favourite non-obvious underdark monster?

I'd say mine is likely cave fisher, hook horror, or grell. I also like cloakers, mimics, greater mimics, room mimics, etc. (although these guys are more dungeon than underdark)

And the purple worm deserves a shout-out too

Ropers. Those things are a lot nastier than they appear at first glance. Plus they fit the basic D&D monster theme of "some random object trying to kill you" as they're basically giant carnivorous stalactites.

That's stalagmites. Carnivorous stalactites are the drop bears darkmantles.

That would be the Piercer! It is a monster that basically looks like a stalactite and hangs out waiting for its unwary victim to walk underneath it and then drops down to impale the poor sap. ‘Scholars believe the darkmantle has recently evolved from a similar but far less capable subterranean predator.’(guess the one?)

Yeah, I always get the two confused. But of course there's killer versions of each one. :smallwink:

Honestly most people I've talked to think they're cheesy. But I love the monsters that are random parts of the dungeon trying to kill you. The Trapper is a killer floor, the Lurker Above is a killer ceiling, the Stun Jelly is a killer wall, Mimics are killer chests and doors etc. I'm sure there's others but that's all I can remember atm.

Cloakers are killer, well, cloaks, and gelatinous cubes and gray oozes are killer air and water, near enough.

Special mention to Ragamoffyns, which are killer clothes, and succubi, which are killer girls. :smalltongue:

Mine would have to be a the Umberhulk as well as the Purple Worm.

Had a great encounter with and Umberhulk wanting to get Purple Worm eggs. We figured the Worm was less of a threat then the umberhulk. In the end we got lucky and killed the worm. Then went on a great and crazy chase evading the umberhulk. Was alot of fun.

The 3.5 Lurker Above can be found http://wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/mm/mm20020719a]here, for when you want the ceiling to be trying to kill people.

The Malgoren (http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mm/20040130a) is an uncommon Underdark monster, but isn't anything really special.

Underdark, ironically enough. They're rust monsters, but instead of rust, their (4, instead of 2) tentacles have disintegrate.

I was in a campaign once where a Pally of Slaughter tried to get one as her mount....
