First, the opening post....

DA RULES as written by Bookman, the true host of Playground Squares and whose spot as host I am merely keeping warm until he is ready to return.

This is just like Hollywood Squares except instead of celebrites, we play with Titans posters! I'm Various people are the hosts. We need 11 people to play, 9 of which must be TitanITPs crammed into squares. The other two can be whoever are contestants.

I'll Someone will ask the Titans people crammed in the squares the questions, chosen from categories based on GitP Trivia.

The contestants then decide if they agree or disagree with the answer given. If they're right, they get the square. If they're wrong, their opponent gets the square*.

A Contestant wins by getting three in a row, either diagonally, horizontally, or vertically. If neither contestant gets three in a row, or it is deemed impossible to reach three in a row by either contestant, the first to five squares wins.

It can be about the games, The Town FFRP, or OoTS anything at all. So... who all wants to play enter the madness?

*Unless it would cause the opponent to win the game. You must correctly Agree/Disagree to win the game.

NOTICE: No Lawyers allowed in Playground Squares, upon death by Flying Shark.

Starter Table

We need 2 new Contestants and 9 new Squares.

It has been pointed out to me that posting to be on the waiting list may discourage new players from joining. So I ask that the Current Squares and Contestants wait 24 hours before posting their interest to be in the next game. Thank you.

Exception: If a Square isn't asked a question in the course of the game, they are allowed to forego the 24 hour waiting period.

 I seem to have forgotten to ask the question.

Okay, Penguinator, here is your super hard Canadian Knowledge challenge:

With the passing of a Constitutional Act of 1867, the dominion of Canada was created by fusing the North American British colonies into one. Two of the Provinces were left unchanged, in name and boundaries.

The third, the Province of Canada, was split in two, and given two new distinct names and boundaries. One half became Ontario. What name was the other half gifted?

Saposhiente, Paul Michael Levesque has been in professional wrestling since 1994, when he joined the WCW. In 1995 he traded to the WWF, as the Blue Blood; Hunter Hearst Helmsley, which he eventually shortened to Triple H.

He then went on to form Degeneration-X with Shawn Michaels, Chyna, and one other. What was the ring name of the fourth member?

Before the formation of Degeneration-X, but when he was already at the WWF, Rich Rude formed a rivalry with Jake "The Snake" Roberts. Rude had a routine where, before the match, he would make a show of removing his robe while insulting the males in the crowd. Later, Paul would talk at the WWF about "The Dominant Animal" (It wasn't Atreyu). Antics like these made Rich Rude perfect for Degeneration-X, a group infamous for breaking the rules, acting and speaking as they pleased.

Sorry about the delay! Writing about things that I (initially) knew nothing about is hard.

Mangosta 71, I think some insects desire bacon, meaning we need to Meat the Beatles.

Lex-Kat
2013-08-15, 07:40 AM
In 1966, Capitol Records released yet another fine Beatles album. Just one slight problem: They used a highly controversial cover for the album, known popularly as the Butcher Cover.

It had the Fab Four wearing white lab coats with various slices of meat strewn about their shoulders and laps. Paul has two headless baby dolls on his shoulders, one of the heads in his lap. George is standing behind them, holding up the other head. :smallyuk:

To fix the problem, they decided to glue a new image over the old. What is the real title of this infamous album?

mangosta71
2013-08-15, 09:12 AM
Who disturbs my slumber?

Oh. Hi. Erm...let's just move along, shall we?

As the local repository of all knowledge related to the so-called Fab Four (all the better to mock their fanbase), I am, of course, well-versed in the intricacies surrounding their album makings.

This particular album came out on the heels of John's "more popular than Jesus" comment, which provoked the Vatican to publicly censure the group, and the controversial cover on top of that led to plunging sales and caused EMI to pull the album off the shelves. When it was re-released two years later as The White Album, it enjoyed their customary success. Just more evidence that, while you can judge a book by its cover, you'll often end up looking like an idiot if you do.

The Bushranger
2013-08-15, 01:36 PM
I'll agree.

Lex-Kat
2013-08-16, 08:03 AM
:smallconfused: What's this?BZZZZTT!! Someone answered wrong? :smalleek:

The correct answer was Yesterday and Today. And though I'm not 100% positive, I don't think they waited two years after pulling it to re-release it.

But, as it's a Winning Square, not one gets the block.

Amidus Drexel....

In 1965, Gene Roddenberry presented NBC with a new show, claiming it to be "Wagon Train in Space".

In the original pilot episode, no one; male or female, wore go-go boots and mini-skirts. Spock was just the chief scientist, not the second in command.

What was the character's name who was Capt. Pike's female second in command?

Amidus Drexel
2013-08-17, 02:29 AM
Well, she's clearly talking about Star Wars.
You mean Star Trek.
I'd just like to mention that Battlestar Galactica is a thing. I know it's got nothing to do with this.
Oh, whatever.
Doesn't matter, it's a trick question.
Hrm? No it isn't.
Yes it is. There wasn't any female second in command.
Did you actually watch the pilot episode?
Well, yeah. I watched the whole first trilogy.
...
In fact, I don't remember there being a big chain of command anyway.
Well, technically it is a trick question, although for a different reason.
...oh, right. I suppose that counts as a trick...
Yeah, not naming your second command is a bit silly. I mean, they just called her Number Two. Utterly ridiculous, if you ask me.

Umm... For some reason, the fact that this is framed as a question feels slightly unsettling to me...

However... As the twenty-four hour waiting period is once again over, I again put forward my application for the prestigious position of square holder.
Plus, I would like to reassure new square denizens that it's less being crammed and more like forcefully contained in a claustrophobia, and occasionally vertigo, inducing box.

 Oh yeeeaah. My mistake. Mangosta, you can't be a Contestant, as you were there when some of these questions were asked in Trogland. :smallsigh: So you'll be taking Fleeing Coward's place in the lower right corner.

Now, back to the game.

Felandria, did you know that the characters in the original Gauntlet video game had names? The Valkyrie was named Thyra, the Elf was Questor, and the Wizard was Merlin! :smalleek:

Yup, that's right. Merlin is stuck wandering the maze-like Gauntlet, hunting for food and potions.

That leaves the Warrior. What mythological hero or god was he named after?

Well, I don't know if you're aware, but oftentimes the Gods have these parties, Greek, Roman, Norse, Rock, all of them.

Anyway, I was chatting with Jupiter and Aphrodite when I heard one of the others bragging about how the Warrior in Gauntlet was named after him.

I tell you, that Perseus is SUCH a glory hog.

Money? No, no, no. This has nothing to do with money. This is all about the Evil Dead series. Or more accurately, the lead actor of that great (first three only) set of films.

Bruce Campbell played Ash Williams in the Evil Dead trilogy, but more recently has been seen on the successful teevee series Burn Notice as Sam Axe, ex-Navy Seal.

But he was on teevee waaaaaaay before that. In the `80s, What prime-time soap opera did Bruce guest star as Joel Bensen?

Hrm... now, the real difficult choice here is for you to determine whether or not I would lie to you despite you normally thinking that I lie, or whether I'd tell you the truth in an attempt to double-bluff (or is it triple-bluff?) you. Of course, statistically speaking from the amount of things I could mention, the chance of the actual answer being given is negligible, but those statistics are meaningless if I know the correct answer. I think the most important bit of this is, would you place the poison in the goblet next to yourself, or in the one next to me... oh, look, what's that?

:smalleek: Woah! Woah! Woah! Calm down HiT, we're not gonna talk about that Mass Effect.

So, in 1995 Bioware wqas busy with their newest game, Jade Empire. So they handed off the reigns of Knights of the Old Republic to someone they trusted; Obsidian Entertainment.

There are plenty of mixed feelings about how well the game turned out. Glitches and a badly cut ending took away from all the improvements they'd made over the first game.

Of the original cast of characters, only one non-droid makes a return, and joins the second band of heroes/villains. What is Mandalore's name in Knights of the Old Republic I?

Okay, so Mandalore. He sure isn't a droid, that's positive. And well... let's see...

I mean, ahem... so Mandalore... you sure it's not a girl? Sounds like Mandy...

Mangosta, perhaps you remember this one.

An Easter Egg, as it concerns video games, is an intentionally hidden message, inside joke, or feature hidden somewhere in the game. The very first Easter Egg was added to a game that would influence future games of its genre for years to come.

What is the name of this Atari 2600 video game?

Anyway, I remember well when the Atari 2600 came out. The fact that I hadn't been born yet is a matter of no importance. It was a night in October. A Tuesday if memory serves.

Don't let the fact that this is a trick question throw you off, seeing as how the very first Easter egg in a video game was on a different system, and our host is in fact referring to the first widely known chicken-spawning device of the celebration of the vernal equinox. The game in question is Alfred Hitchcock's Adventure. As with all of his titles, Hitchcock himself appears in a brief cameo as the dragon.

Well, since you are so ready to answer. It's not an Umbrella, it's a Parasol!

In Soulless, the first book of the Parasol Protectorate series, we meet Alexia Tarabotti. She is of British and Italian descent, living in London, England during the Victorian age, and she's Soulless. A Soulless human is someone who steals the soul from Vampires and Werewolves, taking away their supernatural ability and making them just base humans, and therefore easier to kill.

First published in 2009, who was the writer of this series of Steampunk Paranormal Romances?

Sabeki
2013-09-05, 06:44 PM
Hmmm... Vampires. While I feel like the answer to this should come easily, I am having trouble remembering...
Well, the main character is of Italian and English descent, and as we all know, Italy is in the South of Europe. Therefor the author is Italian.
However! I know that Bram Stoker, an Englishman, wrote Dracula. Therefore, the author is British.
However however, we also know that the Italians live in the sun, AND the sun hurts vampires. A vampire wouldn't write a book they were killed in. Therefor, the writer is Italian.
However however However, Italy and England are not the only countries that vampires live in, therefore the author can be of any ethnicity.
So, I do believe that it is Gail something or other.
Can not remember her last name.
EDIT: Just remembered, last name Calliger. Gaile Calliger
(Gaile with an E, last post was wrong name )

ThePhantom
2013-09-05, 08:46 PM
I have read all of that series, through I don't fully remember the name of the author. However, I will disagree in this case.

Lex-Kat
2013-09-08, 01:20 PM
Ding! Ding! Ding! And ThePhantom has won the game by correctly guessing that Gaile Calliger was not the author of the Parasol Protectorate, but that Gail Carriger was.

Magtok! Tell me about orange! Everything orange! ALL THE ORANGE.

Ah oranges. The fruit of the Gods. In Amazon Pixie culture, pixies would present their beloved with an orange as a sign of love and affection.

But here in America, when I think of oranges, I sometimes think of Orange County. Orange County, California. Home of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and Disneyland. Disneyland (Park), the only theme park built directly under the supervision of Walt Disney.

As big as Disney is today, it could not then finance this dream alone. Lord Magtok, what fledgling broadcast network helped fund the park, and also convinced Walt to drop the "ia" from Disneylandia?

Well we Americans are hopelessly obsessed with our own country, so in all likelihood, it was either the National Broadcasting Company, or the American Broadcasting Company. Both of which are based in the good ol' USA, and not the same company, by the way. I think our baseball teams are divided up into matching categories or something, oddly enough. I blame Exachix. I don't have anything to back that up, but historically speaking, pointing fingers at wolves or things that look like wolves is almost always a good idea in this part of the playground.

Now, I haven't the foggiest clue which one of those two companies is actually responsible, so umm...hey, let's let dice (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4218659/) decide!

Ah, Buffy. A pasttime of my family. I remember that episode fondly, way back in the early days of Season 1. The events of that episode carry on for a long while, since Amy-rat stays with the gang as they search for a cure. I'm bad with names, but the witch's mother is a bit easier to remember, since it's just a variant of my little sis's name.

Her name is Catherine. Cat and the rat... heh. :smallamused:

Bushranger, ever hear the song "Keep on Dancing"? It was released in 1965 and was the biggest hit for The Gentrys, a group from Memphis, Tennessee. It reached #4 on the charts.

After the group broke up, one of its members went into Wrestling, as a manager, finding great success in the WWF during the 80s. While there, he wrote many of the entrance themes for the wrestlers, both those he managed, and those he didn't.

What is the name of this WWE Legend?

 What happened to me! One moment, I was thinking of a question for Big Fuzzy Dice, the next I was.... Hmmmmm. :smallconfused:

Penguinator, Big Fuzzy Dice are a staple of the 1950s. Though they did hit their peak in the 70s & 80s. Anyway, no show better represented the 50s like Happy Days, starring Ron Howard & later Henry Winkler*.

As everyone who's watched the show knows, Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli befriends Richard Cunningham and his friends, Ralph Malph and Warren "Potsie" Weber, and the show mostly rotates around their shenanigans and adventures.

Richard Cunningham has a sister, Joanie. But did you know he also had an older brother. What was the name of this lost son of the Cunninghams, and what did he do?
*Henry Winkler was on the show from the start, but was initially a secondary character.

Also, it sounds like Lex suffers from Summoner's Amnesia. Its a mental disorder that affects approximately 1/25 outsiders, although more often found in dryads, rather than pixies, but its not unheard of. Normally, whenever a fey is summoned by a mortal due to a Summon Monster spell, Spell-Like-Ability, or what have you, the summoned creature will remember its time on the Prime-Material Plane, but in some cases, the summoned creature will have no recollection of what happened. That's probably the case.

Did you know that Chinese Checkers isn't a variant of Checkers? It's not even Chinese!! It was actually invented in 1892, based off an American board game invented in 1883/84, which itself is based off an English board game called Hoppity in 1854.

What was the original German name for this globe-hopping, non-Chinese, non-checkers game of star-crossed marbles?

Elemental
2013-09-30, 02:05 AM
Well Lex, you've done a very good job of trying to tear down everything I know about the world, but I refuse to be fazed. Because I was already aware of this, after all, how better to boost sales than to give something an exotic name?

Now, if I recall correctly, and that is a big if, then the answer is likely to be Stern-Halma, which is in fact only half German as they decided to use a Greek word for the second half for some unfathomable reason.

Castaras
2013-10-02, 03:29 PM
Apologies for forgetting about this.

I agree.

Lex-Kat
2013-10-02, 08:22 PM
No problem. You likely forgot because I'm a bad pixie, and forgot it myself. :smallfrown:

Ding! Ding! Ding! Stern is German for Star and Halma is Greek for Jump. The original American game was just called Halma and was played on a basic 16 x 16 board, with the players starting in the four corners, instead of within the points of the star.

Now for the real questions. Will Atreyu take a chance and go for the win? Will he go for the block? Or will he choose one of the sides and play it relatively safe? Only time and the Llama will tell.

Okay, with that out of the way (nasty), on to the question.
Escargot is, as many people know, a French delicacy of cooked land snails. Which is, as previously stated, nasty. So I'll change the subject and instead talk about an S car, that goes.

This brings us to the Plymouth Superbird,
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/27/Plymouth_Superbird.jpg/280px-Plymouth_Superbird.jpg
The car is a modified Plymouth Road Runner, and sister to the Dodge Charger Daytona. This car was built specifically to lure "King" Richard Petty back to Plymouth and away from their competitor, Ford.

What was the Year, Make, and Model of this 1 year Ford pitstop between Petty Plymouths?

You have found the super-secret (so secret, even I didn't know about it) category!!

Fleeing Coward, Dallas, South Dakota is located on the border of Nebraska, near the center of the state. As of 2010, there are only 120 people living in this dying near-village. There was 144 living there as of 2000, just to show it is indeed shrinking.

There's not really much else to say about it, other than it was named after Dallas, Texas. So let's move there, where there's more interesting facts to turn into a solid question.

Fleeing Coward, what was the name of the man who started the trading post that would eventually grow into a permanent settlement, then develop into the ninth largest city of the United States?

Fleeing Coward

Let's see how much the Llama remembers from the very first Playground Squares game, shall we? :smallamused:

Cuthalion, as you may or may not be aware, the very first Playground Squares thread was started on June 1st, 2006, with Valda, Adlav and Samiam: the Jacked-Up Trinity (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/member.php?u=2917) hosting. Recruitment for Squares and Contestants began at 12:11 PM, and the first Square joined the game almost 2 hours later: Lykan.

So the question is: What was the name of the first Contestant to choose a Square?

Cuthalion
2013-10-18, 01:42 PM
Well, I'm not sure. I haven't been doing this for long. Now, I have seen quite a few people who came here way back in the day. But of the old crowd, I'd say, it was probably ClaimingLight.

Atreyu the Masked LLama

Lex-Kat

Ding! Ding! Ding! Atreyu was correct to disagree. The correct answer was Dean of Illithids, known more recently as BelkarsDagger. And just for added knowledge, his opponent that game was indeed ClaimingLight.

Atreyu has won the game, as there is no way for Castaras to get 3 in a row, and Atreyu has the necessary 5 Squares in cases of ties.

In 2004, the world of heavy metal lost what many believe to be a Guitar God, Dimebag Darrel. He himself laid claim to many influences; Ace Frehley (Kiss), Ty Tabor (King's X), Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Randy Rhodes (Ozzy Osbourne), Pete Willis (Def Leppard).

But an unlikely collaboration began in 1999, when he met "outlaw" country singer, David Allan Coe, and found they had many things in common. Between 1999 and 2003 the two, along with Vinnie Paul and Rex Brown, worked together when time permitted on an album that would latter be called "Rebel Meets Rebel". Sabeki, in what year was this Country Metal album released?

So you think you know about Tiramisu? :smallamused: Well, how about some possible history? While there are many theories as to the origin of this popular Italian dessert; Roberto Linguanotto and Francesca Valori of Treviso in 1967 or Carminantonio Iannaccone of Via Sottotreviso in 1969.

Meanwhile Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary gives 1982 as the first mention of the dessert, a year before Giovanni Capnist's 1983 cookbook I Dolci Del Veneto. But, there is a claim that it is much older than any of these claims. It is believed that the cake was originally created to honour Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosimo_III_de%27_Medici,_Grand_Duke_of_Tuscany)'s visit to a city some time between 1670 and 1723. Much, much older than 1967.

Atreyu, what city did Cosimo visit, that supposedly inspired this beloved treat?

Ahem! In 1848 Quartermaster Henry Wayne (no relation to John Wayne, as far as I can tell) suggested to Senator Jefferson Davis the idea of importing camels for use as pack animals.

It wasn't until 1855, and Senator Davis had become Secretary of War Davis, that the idea was approved to a tune of $30,000 to pay for the camels and their handlers.

Although by some accounts, the experiment was a success as far as their usefulness was concerned; the camels stench, bad disposition, and tendency to wander made them unpopular among the rank and file. So it is with no surprise that they were abandoned as soon as a reasonable excuse came along, the American Civil War.

And now we get to the question. What was the name of the U. S. President who appointed Jefferson Davis as Secretary of War?

Fleeing Coward

I'll plead the fifth in response to Felandria :smalltongue:

As for the answer to the other question, it would have been the 13th President of the United States and the last Whig President Millard Filmore who appointed him to the role in 1853.

As a disclaimer though, I do not and have never lived in the states so trusting me to provide the correct answer would be a mistake :smallamused:

Mangosta, "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't". The popular candy bar, Mounds, was created in 1920, 26 years before it's sister, Almond Joy.

These two candy bars, along with the York Peppermint Patty, were manufactured by Peter Paul until 1978 when they merged with Cadbury, who was later bought out by Hershey in 1988.

Back to the Almond Joy though, my personal favorite of the chocolate-covered coconut candy. As previously stated, the Almond Joy was created in 1946, replacing another bar that used diced almonds, instead of the two whole nuts that tops Almond Joy. What was the name of this 1936 creation?

mangosta71
2013-11-12, 12:23 PM
The Almond Joy is perhaps the most blatant piece of false advertising ever constructed by the human mind. An honest representation of this vile monstrosity would reflect the fact that it's 90% coconut.

For a clue as to the name of its predecessor, one must look into the collective psyche of the time. 1936 was the height of the Great Depression, so names tended to be things that advertisers felt would kindly hope in the American Dream. Thus, their chocolate-covered coconut bar was called the Dream Bar. Kind of simplistic by modern standards of nomenclature, but since WWII we've invented subtlety.

Those monsters!

Anyway... As for the matter at hand, were it not a topic concerning American chocolate bars, I would probably have a greater chance of getting this right, perhaps by actually knowing the answer. However, I do not, so I will fall to gut instinct and intuition and Agree, though I will likely regret this decision.

:smallmad: Killing my sisters and brothers is not funny.

In 2004, Great Ormond Street Hospital held a competition to find a writer of the Official (The rights were given to them by J. M. Barrie in 1929) sequel to Peter and Wendy, the novelization of the Peter Pan play.

The winner was Geraldine McCaughrean, and Peter Pan in Scarlet was released in 2006, to mostly positive reviews, even with the few continuity problems. But the most important part of the novel is that Tinker Bell lives!

Yes, in case you didn't know it, by the end of Barrie's novel it is indicated by Pan that Tinker Bell is no more, as Fairies do not live long. :smallfrown:

But, in Peter Pan in Scarlet, one fairy rectifies this mistake (in my opinion) on Barrie's part. Cuthalion, what is the name and motivation of the fairy who brings Tinker Bell (Officially) back to life?

The March of Dimes Foundation, known world-wide for it's dedication to the health of babies and infants, and research into preventative measures for birth defects and premature birth. Originally called the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, this not-for-profit group has undergone changes in both name and mission.

Through research and educational efforts, the Foundation was able to combat and defeat it's first nemesis, by 1955. Amidus Drexel, what paralyzing ailment was this institution originally created to fight at its inception?

Amidus Drexel
2013-11-27, 03:15 PM
Now, having done some in-depth research on this question (I asked some guy at the gas station), I can say with some certainty that I am now an expert in this field.

Now, one might think that this paralyzing disease was polio, but that wasn't completely eradicated until the 80's. The disease that the March of Dimes was started for was Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Ding Ding Ding! You were correct to disagree with Amidus, and Polio is indeed the correct answer.

It was, in fact, Franklin D. Roosevelt himself who helped found the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, because he himself had the ailment.

As for Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), in recent years there has been a theory that actually this is what FDR suffered from. The reason for this is that Poliomyelitis typically affects children, and he was 39 when he first started exhibiting the symptoms. These same symptoms can be found for GBS victims, which was, and still is, a lesser known disease.

It'd be like getting Chicken Pox when you are 39 years old. Not impossible, but very unlikely and uncommon.

Aaaaanyway.... Felandria, please choose a Category and a Square.

Positive. You will find no bodies under the floorboards.

So many ideas to choose from. Shall I ask a question about Tell-Tale Heart, or possibly Edgar Allan Poe himself? Should I look for the inventor of eyeglasses, which I did, and not too surprisingly, it's uncertain or unknown who invented them. So we move on to Benjamin Franklin, the undisputed inventor of bifocals.

But nay, I say. Let's focus once again on murder! :smallamused:

On February 14th, 1926, while most people in Chicago were looking for love and romance, five members of Bugs Moran's North Side Gang, plus two collaborators, were gunned down inside a garage, unarmed.

There were witnesses who testified they saw two cops walk with two nicely dressed gentlemen into the garage, and then later back out. One of the North Siders heading to the garage wrote down the license number of the cop car parked outside, before leaving the neighborhood. And Frank Gusenburg survived fourteen hits, was rushed to the hospital, and stabilized. Only to not give up the names of those who'd just attempted to kill him (and succeeded, dying three hours later), stating "I'm not talking." or "Nobody shot me."

So who killed Peter Gusenberg, Frank Gusenberg, Albert Kachellek, Adam Heyer, Reinhardt Schwimmer, Albert Weinshank, and John May? More importantly, who ordered the hit? Well to anyone who has read or heard about this, the answer can only be one man: Alphonse Gabriel Capone.

Well, this has gotten to be a long question. So we'll end it here. Penguinator, do you happen to know the name of the Detroit gang who is believed to have taken part in the most infamous Valentine's Day murder?

Due to personal experience with bandanas and gang affiliations, I believe it to be the Paisley Gang.

Peas? Pods? Wha?

Lex-Kat
2013-12-08, 07:46 PM
The pod? The Colosseum. The peas? Piscus and Verus.

On the inaugural opening day of the Colosseum in 80 A.D., these two gladiators fought for hours on end, neither having the advantage over the other.

Marcus Valerius Martialis wrote of their combat, the only known recorded fight of the day:

"While Priscus continued to draw out the contest, and Verus likewise, and for a long time the struggle was evenly balanced on both sides, discharge was demanded for the stout fighters with loud and frequent shouting; but Caesar obeyed his own law (the law was that once the palm had been set up the fight had to proceed until a finger was raised): he did as he was allowed, making frequent awards of plate. Still, a resolution was found for the contest, equal they fought, equal they yielded. To both Caesar awarded the wooden sword and the palm: thus courage and skill received their reward. This has happened under no emperor but you, Caesar: two men fought and two men won."

While in modern times it is called the Colosseum, in the age of the Roman Empire, it was called the Flavian Amphitheatre, due to when it was built, during the Flavian Dynasty. According to one of the more popular theories, it was called the Colosseum due to its proximity to the Colossus Solis, a statue dedicated to the Roman sun god, Sol.

But Sol isn't who the statue was originally modelled. It was originally created in the likeness of one of the first five Emperors of Rome. And that is the question, Bushranger. Which Emperor's head first adorned the Colossus Solis?

The Bushranger

Let's go with All in the Family

Many know the infamous and highly disgusting king who fathered King Edward VI, Queen (Bloody) Mary I, and Queen Elizabeth I (who may or may not have been married to the Doctor :smallwink:).

And some may also know of the "Nine Day Queen" Lady Jane Grey, whose reign lasted between the death of Edward and the arrival of Mary. She was only 16 or 17. But Lady Jane was not the first woman to almost sit on the throne as Queen.

Four hundred years and twelve days prior, the only legitimate daughter of Henry I, Matilda, fought for her place on the throne from the usurper Stephen of Blois. His reign lasted from 1135 to 1154, to be succeeded by Matilda's son, Henry II.

Cristo, In which year during the reign of king Stephen did Matilda nearly retake the throne that should have been rightfully hers to begin with?

Cristo Meyers

Sounds like a problem straight out of Crusader Kings 2...

...and like most problems in Crusader Kings 2, it's nothing that couldn't be solved by a bit of familicide. An attempt on Stephen's life left him in a weakened position and he was captured in 1143, so Matilda ascended to the throne.

She ascended for all of about six months, but still, she ascended.

It's been so long, need to look up the answer myself. Ding Ding Ding! Ah yes. It was 1141 when Lady Matilda, not to be confused with Stephen's wife, Queen Matilda, very nearly was crowned as the new Queen.

Game over. Congratulations Felandria.

So, I gotta ask. Are the Contestants just lucky, or are some of you under the misunderstanding that you're supposed to look up the answers? :smallconfused: Because it's kinda baffling to me that no matter the question, no matter the Square's answers, way too many are choosing to Agree/Disagree correctly.

I just wonder.. if I'm wasting my time asking these questions. :smallsigh:

Most of them I know, otherwise I guess using logical deduction.

I consider the idea of anyone just knowing all of the answers to be highly implausible, and any claims to the contrary insulting to my intelligence.

With 50/50 odds, the probability of getting 9 in a row is 1/512. To go two games in a row in that manner is 1/262144. So, no, using agree/disagree instead of a multiple choice format does not explain away the statistical anomaly.

Count Dingdong
2013-12-31, 04:05 PM
Well, there was that one answer where I tricked people into misremembering the question (even though it was just the previous post) and got them to get it wrong... but then... well, you guys said that was against the spirit of the game (giving an answer to a similar question, so people misremember) and reversed the decision. But I digress...

Anyway, it's possible people aren't being tricky enough with their wrong answers? Psychology-wise, it's easier to try and trick someone into thinking a wrong answer is right than to trick someone into thinking a right answer is wrong, which in my mind explains the slew of disagrees at the end. It might also have been something where squares thought someone would see so many "disagrees" in a row and choose to instead randomly pick "agree"? Or maybe that it's more fun to try and trick someone with a made-up answer? Who knows? Maybe it was blind luck? :smalleek:

Or it could be that people did indeed know many of the answers. I'm always surprised on Jeopardy with how much people know (and at times how much they don't know!). Something difficult to one person can be extremely easy to another, so it's difficult coming up with difficult questions. Go varied and obscure, and hope people don't know what you know. I for one thought your questions were difficult and interesting. I knew a few but definitely not all of them.

Elemental
2013-12-31, 11:23 PM
In my defence, I answered four questions there, one was a guess, another a hunch based of geography and two I already knew the answer to.

mangosta71
2014-01-01, 02:32 AM
The questions are varied and obscure, which is why it's so incredible that anyone would just happen to know the answers to all of them.

For myself, I make up a weird, random story that's only tangentially related to the question, and whether the answer I give is accurate or not depends on a coin flip; that way nobody knows whether they should agree or disagree based simply on the fact that I'm answering.

Lex-Kat
2014-01-01, 01:06 PM
Just to clarify, I'm not accusing anyone of cheating, though it may sound like I am. I'm not a History Major or anything. I look these things up, bounce from one idea to another allowing links to lead me to other links until I come to something I think is obscure enough to not be common knowledge.

Part of the reason I do this is a bit of a teaching thing. *shrug* I hoping that the Contestants, Squares, and the Audience may be learning a little as they play/watch. So it doesn't 100% bother me. Maybe 7%? :smalltongue:
