Hello there, guys! I'm tweaking the Sorcerer for an upcoming game and would like to have some input. Basically, I wanted to change the class so it would get new spell levels at the same time as a Wizard of equal level. After tweaking the spells per day table, I turned my attention to the spells known table. I've come up with these two versions, but I'm not sure on which to use:

The second one is more "organic", and has the advantage of giving one spell of each of your 3 highest spell levels every time you reach a level in which you won't get a new spell level. However, this also means an extra spell of 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th levels and two extra 7th level spells. Do you think this will unbalance things?

Not really, no. It will make the Sorcerer slightly stronger but still weaker than the T1 casters.

Yes, that was mostly what I felt too. It's a good thing. However, one of the main pluses of T2s in my book is that they're somewhat predictable, that is, you can plan around their abilities. Do you think that the second table will make them too unpredictable?

Aren't spontaneous casters more predictable? They get less than 50 spells known, ever.

The Sorcerer with the second table get 51!

Anyways, that's not the point. I want to know if, by giving a Sorcerer more of his most powerful spells, its power would get out of hand. I'm tempted to say "no", but I want second opinions on the matter.

No. A sorcerer who really wants versatility can use staves or runestaves to cast spells at full power or wands for spells of generally less power. 12% or so more spells known at level 20 not including any of the sorcerers highest level spells at any point will not change the balance significantly.

Alright, then, I've settled for the second table. Thanks a lot for the input, guys!

The first question is do wizards in your gaming group frequently change which spells they have prepared?
