Welcome to The Stick Awards II: Second Edition!

The Stick Awards are handed out to the best strips of all time as chosen by our fellow Playgrounders.

Over the next few days, we're taking a bit of a break and entering The Best of the Hundred Tournament for Comics #1 - #100 as we take the time to decide which of the strips really are the best of best.

For full details about the Stick Awards, and any questions about them, please check out the main thread here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=283609).

To read more about the original Stick Awards, created by Nazzo, the 102nd, please read his thread here. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34791)

To vote in this thread, simply state which comic of the five listed is your favorite. Bolding the number of the comic (Like this) helps it stand out.

Voting, which only lasts five days during the Best of the Hundred Tournament will close on August 1st, 4pm EDT. Any votes made after that will NOT count toward the totals.

The winner of this semi-final will go on to the finals which will be held after the second semi-final is done. The two strips that get the most votes during the semis that DIDN'T win, will also reach the finals. So voting is extra special important this time around, as it will determine who the 'Wild Card' entrants are.

Last week, 92 :vaarsuvius: - Reading is Fundamental (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0092.html) became the final entrant to the Best of the Hundred tournament.

Ah? But who will the winner of the tournament be? Let's find out.

It's time for us to vote vote vote vote for the best of the Sticks in....

13 Plot, Ahoy! (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0013.html)
24 Do You Hear What I Hear? (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0024.html)
38 Spontaneous Artistic Expression (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0038.html)

Hmm, none of these stand out to me as particularly splendid. But I think I'm going to go with 38: Spontaneous Artistic Expression. The sheer infantility of the last panel still gets me every time.

38 is the best. The Elan/Belkar interaction is great

38 is cool; it's rare but always fun to see Elan and Belkar getting along. However, I'm voting for 50.

Gotta go with 38.

I'm gonna go with 4. None of them really seem that great, but the introduction of Elan's song was funny for that time, and it didn't pointlessly conform to game mechanics.

I got a 4!

I think #24 was the only one I voted for the first time through, but I don't think it's the best of these. #50: The Semi-Secret Origin of Elan & Nale is pretty easily the strongest strip here IMO, and I came really close to voting for it in the first round anyway. I...honestly don't see much special about #38...

4, no doubt!

I like all of the strips, but I'll go for #4. It's the one I see as being the most "iconic".

4 was a really good early strip

#024, though I'd like to see 50 make it into the best of the hundred finals as well.

I don't think I voted for any of these the first time thru, and they have not improved with reflection. But 50 is at least above average.

I'm torn between 4 and 50, but I'll go with 4: in the end it's the best of this bunch.

I didn't vote for any of those the first time, and they weren't really at the top of my lists, so I need to pick a new favourite out of the bunch :smallfrown:.

So I'm going with 13 - Plot, Ahoy! (This "treasure" idea intrigues me!)

5th place: 38. Below average, IMO.

4th place: 4 3rd place: 13: Both of these are solid and funny strips, but not outtanding.

2nd place: 50. A pretty strong strip, but just not as good as...

Strip 24.

I'm gonna go with 24, just because to me it's the funniest of them.

THE STICK AWARDS II: BEST OF THE HUNDRED TOURNAMENT (1-100) (Semi-Final #1)

4 The Power of Music (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0004.html)
13 Plot, Ahoy! (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0013.html)
24 Do You Hear What I Hear? (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0024.html)
38 Spontaneous Artistic Expression (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0038.html)
50 The Semi-Secret Origin of Elan & Nale (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0050.html)

I vote 24 "The heroes are here"
closely followed by the backstory of Elan & Nale.

:vaarsuvius: And so our vote shall be placed onto the strip numbered 13 for it is fullsome with good plot exposition, jokes and a mad lich.

24, but it looks like I'm betting on the underdog here...

Not especially. It's come on strong since the intial wave.

So far:

4) 8
13) 3
24) 8
38) 5
50) 9

And as noted in the results and commentary thread, if there is a tie for the Wild Card entrants? They both/all get in.

This is why I wanted to try the Wild Card idea. Get people still voting even if one of their favorites isn't winning.

Not a big fan of any of them (I don't think Book 1 is very good, and the strips in it that I did like best didn't get selected in the previous rounds), but I'll go with 50 as a major plot one.

In lieu of the current storyline, i'd go with 50 over 38.

Yeah ... I can't decide what to vote for, as I don't think any of these are the ones I would have chosen as favorites out of their respective decades ...

50 is big and plot-relevant, but as I believe I mentioned last time, I just love the subtle detail in 24 seen by the points at which each party member gets upset at Durkon for scaring away the NPCs. Roy gets angry when the goblins mention recouping the expenses incurred by the expidition, Vaarsuvius gets angry when the goblins destroy the powerful magical object, and Belkar gets mad when the goblins flee and deny him the chance to harvest their organs.

Plus. goblins showing the ability to reason and avoid danger. Fun foreshadowing of future plot-central themes.

I'm having a hard time deciding. I don't remember if I voted for any of these the first time through. I guess I'll go with 50. I like Elan failing to recognize how the stories fit until Nale slaps him, and I like Elan pointing out that Nale's leveling choices have been somewhat questionable and Nale's reaction.

It's a bit of a coin flip for me between "I choose you stinky Roy" and "Those stories don't match up at all. SLAP" Ask me on another day which to chooe, and I might change my mind. But for today, I'll go for 38.

And with that....

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED!

:elan: 50 - The Semi-Secret Origin of Elan & Nale (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0050.html) is the winner of this semi-final! It now moves on to the finals for the Best of the Hundred tournament (1-100).

They may not have been the five that I would have chosen, but the votes this time put them in the exact order I would have chosen.
