Coming out of the door, Kharell takes the dragon's breath full on. His back slams into the wall, and he shakes uncontrollably as the electricity wracks his body. He slumps down to his knees, and slowly, with gritted teeth, pulls himself up to his feet. Beating his axe on his shield noisily, he shuffles sideways get away from the rest of the group, forcing the dragon to choose his targets, buying time to catch his breath.

Simon was lucky enough to quickly duck back inside the door before the Dragon unleashed its brutal breath on his companions. He immediately steps out into the doorway, and unleashes his own blast of lightning at the injured dragon. He then ducks back behind the cover of the doorway.

Neither sword nor magic manages to pierce the dragon's tough hide, and the lightning is particularly ineffective (5 damage from miss damage).

Kharrel takes a moment to catch his breath before he's ready to dive back into the fight (healed 12 hp).

The dragon roars and focuses its attacks on Derrek, its claws lashing out at the fighter. But Derrek is a canny fighter, and he avoids both claws and steps out of the way of the snapping jaws.

Derrek smiles as the weary dragon misses him twice. After the jaws clamp down on air, Derrek stabs at the dragon's exposed head. He then slowly begins to back away from the tower, hoping to lead the beast away from the crumbling tower. "Uh oh! You're getting slow, dragon. Ameliefor sure did a number on you!"

Simon tilts his head in surprise, realizing that his trusty bolt of lightning was little more than a tickle against the lightning-breathing dragon. He looked around the courtyard, looking for something he could use to his advantage. Then he heard it, the subtle strange hum coming from the tower. He needed something that could overwhelm the dragon's natural elemental essence, and now he knew how!

He ran to the wall of the humming tower, and pulled a piece of chalk from his bag. He quickly scribed a series of runic formation he learned back at the Acadamae that, if he channeled them correctly, would temporarily suppress the dragon's elemental essence. At least... he hoped...

He ends by pulling his dagger and slicing his left arm, wiping the blood onto his right hand, and pressing his hand onto the formula. The drawing flares to light, and bursts outward from the wall....

Intelligence with Acadamae Wizard training [roll0] vs either dragon PD or environment DC, whichever you feel is best.

Derrek, having recovered from the lightning attack, takes advantage of his position and Silas's illuminating magic, to score a hit on the dragon's wounded side (17 damage).

Despite his dazzlement, Silas manages to strike home with his magic, though its damage is less impressive (5 damage).

Kharell still sees two dragons, and swings at the wrong one, hitting nothing but air. It's barely enough to startle the dragon, who does seem to have pulled something in the process (2 damage). Fortunately, Kharell's vision clears soon afterward.

Seeing that his lightning is ineffective, Simon taps into the disrupted energy of the tower. A bolt of red energy leaps from the tower to the dragon. It doesn't seem to do much immediate harm, but Simon can see that his attack has weakened its resistance (vulnerable to normal attacks, no resistance to lightning, until the end of its next turn).

The dragon attacks Derrek with its claws. While both blows miss, Derrek's dodging leaves an opening, and the dragon's jaws clamp down on Derrek's boot, causing a jolt of electricity to go through his leg (10 regular damage + 4 lightning damage = 14).

Silas is getting pretty annoyed at this point and gives a bellow of rage to let everyone know. He decides that closing his eyes might alleviate the headache that is growing because of his double-vision.

Silas shuts his eyes and focuses on the sound of the dragon's roar. When he feels like he has a grasp of where the dragon is situated, he slowly lifts his hand, and a beam of light issues forth from his palm.

Since his eyes are closed, he sends up a prayer to The Great Eye to heal his half-orc friend and clear his own thoughts. He calls out to the maimed monster, "Dragon, you are wounded. You cannot fly away. Zvegdar has already abandoned the tower and you. If you continue your fight, we will have to destroy you. But if you stand down, we may be able to work out a deal that does not include your death. What say you?"

Derrek staggers back after the dragon removes its fangs from his foot, but just as quickly the pain is gone. He glances over at Silas and the cleric gives him a quick nod.

Derrek doubles his efforts to break the dragon as Silas calls for him to surrender. He darts in between the dragon's front legs hacking at his joints and jumps back as his opportunity ends.

"You would be smart to listen to my friend. He's no liar. The thief who stole the Crusader's warhammer ran away and left you here to die. Your wing is gone, and my blade will slow you if you try to escape."

Silas's beam of light passes just under the dragon's nose, startling him but no more than singing his nostrils (2 damage). His words are another matter, however. The dragon swings its head in Silas's direction, its eyes narrowing.

Its distraction gives Derrek an opening, and his large sword hits the dragon with a solid strike (21 damage). Kharell, meanwhile, attacks the dragon in a frenzy, but the dragon's sudden movement has thrown him off, and he barely dents the dragon's scales (2 damage).

Having prepared his ground, Simon strikes the dragon with a bolt of lightning, and this time, it is caught unprepared. It twitches as the current runs through its body (16 damage).

Whether it was Silas's words or his tone, something he's done has caught the dragon's attention, and with a vicious roar, it charges, ignoring Derrek and Kharell. All its energy is focused on Silas as it attacks.

Silas avoids the attacks as best he can, but one of the claws gets through (8 damage).

Well, this isn't exactly what Silas was hoping for. But when life hands you rampaging dragons, make dragon stew! His eye sparkles with a mischievous glint and a sly mile creeps across his face. "Don't say I didn't warn you. Every time you turn your back on my friends, they will cripple you. Sadly, I am not your biggest threat. They are."

Silas takes a deep breath and stares into the dragon's eyes. The knowledge that he might die in the next moments fills him with steel. He lets out his breath and levels his weapon at the brute before him. "Then again, perhaps I am your biggest threat..."

He swings his mace in an upward arc aiming for the dragon's maw. "Dragon stew, coming right up!" His strike hits home, and Silas feels the satisfying crack of metal on bone.

While the dragon is breathing its last, Roland comes running up, panting. "Good," he gasps. "You killed it." He shakes his head. "It lost interest in chasing me after a while. Sorry I didn't catch up until you got it."

At that moment, rain begins to pour from the sky, and you move into the Pillar where its safe. The surviving mages are very grateful for your help, and offer you what little hospitality there is inside the tower. The storms ravage the tower for the next week, as the magic which had kept the Iron Sea's storms at bay has been disrupted. You understand that the Midland Sea suffers immensely during this time, and many ships are wrecked, until the Archmage is able to jury-rig a new barrier.

Trapped in the tower, you're able to finally do some investigating. There doesn't seem to be much evidence for who delivered the warhammer to the tower in the first place. It may have been Zvegdar, but there's nothing directly tying him to it.

One thing you do discover is a secret compartment in the harp you found. Opening it up, there's an envelope addressed simply to "Fletch."

Silas finds a short letter inside, saying simply:

I know you're looking for me, and I know why. Come and find me.

There's also a key, attached to a small metal tag with a number and the name of a bank in Glitterhaegen.

But that is another story.
