View Full Version : A new Prestige Class

I've been trying to design a prestige class for 3.5. The general idea is to have a psionic rogue grow into a poltergeist type thing. They specialize in Far Hand, Control Flame, Control Sound, and Create Sound psionic powers. This part was easy. Unfortunately I also got the idea of them possibly taking ghost feats from the Ghostwalk Campaign Setting, or for a capstone being able to become a Haunting Presence (or pssession) for a certain amount of time per day, but I don't know how to implement either of these. (I think the newest rules for those were heroes of horror)

Flavor thought: An Victorian type ghost, kinda like Jacob Marley, So chains, controlling fire, making creepy sounds, moving objects around, fear effects.

Requirements: This is for a psionic rogue, lurk, or the like so they would have to be able to take the class, other than that, no clue (though I've seen, 'near death experience' as a requirement for some classes.)

Abilities: See the little flavor thought thing.

Issue: I have no clue how to balance a PrC XD

No one has to feel it necessary to do all the work for me, but I am super new, so captain dummyspeak is always nice =)

Edit: I don't think it matters how much levels it has (I had at one point added in so many features that it became a base class).

I'm not familiar with those psionic abilities (by which I mean most psionic abilities and rules), so depending on how weak the abilities are, you could get them At-Will. For example, getting Light 1/day at first level for a light-based PrC is reasonable, but when you're at 15th level (when it maxes out), even At-Will Daylight might not be powerful enough (depending on other abilities given at mid levels).

With that in mind, if Far hand and Create Sound are almost identical to Mage Hand and Ghost Sound, respectively, then unlimited usages at the higher levels is pretty reasonable.

Those ones are the most Important Powers, and they do mostly seem to be in line with cantrips and/or 1st level spells. But I also wanted to make sure I wasn't absolutely loading down my character (the one using the PrC) with a whole load of cheesed out at-will psi-like abilities.

Edit: And they are SRD so I assume it is okay to link them, if not I can take it down.

Have you considered the Psion Uncarnate (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/prestigeClasses/psionUncarnate.htm)?

I actually considered it for quite a while, but I wasn't a huge fan of having to always be incorporeal (for roleplaying reasons), which is why I ended up deciding to make my own PrC... or at least attempting to make my own XD. I suppose if I go long enough without figuring out something i like however I could always take that and avoid the capstone. Or maybe just get some ghost touch gloves!

How's about permanent blur?

If you're willing to create a new PrC, maybe you'd be open to a psionic conversion of the Child of Night (Tom)?

On an unrelated note: I love ToM. (I switch out between two characters for this campaign and the other is a binder).

Converting the Child of Night might work, though I was hoping to continue with the 3/4 BAB, though I guess you can't get everything you want.

(Don't knkow if that's SRD... hmmm)

But as a capstone how would that apply to a character? Maybe certain amount of time per day?

Well, I'm not familiar with Ghostwalk, so I have no idea how to incorporate it into the class idea.

If we're going with psionics, then I think that having the powers and a PP pool, which eventually become psi-like abilities, is probably the way to go. That way, a one-level dip doesn't give a character infinite uses of some psionic powers, but the class can still make use of them at lower levels.

Your class base would probably be similar to a Soulknife or Pyrokinesist. Your PP pool would probably be similar to the War Mind's.

I'd think that, as powers go, granting Far Hand at 1st, Control Light at 2nd, Create Sound at 3rd, Control Sound at 4th, and Control Flames at 5th would be a reasonable spread. From there, the class would begin getting the powers at-will without PP costs, turning into psi-like abilities. You'd also want to make room for your Ghostwalk-abilities as well, so levels granting more than one psionic power wouldn't be unreasonable. (Or you could grant a power and grant an ability for that level.)

So just to make sure I'm getting you, it wouldn't be to broken to have a feat and a psi-like ability on the same level?
