So after exhausting several resources, I've nearly given up my search. I'm looking for a playable race with a relatively humanoid torso, a snake tail in place of legs, and arms. Something like this (http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090417192153/forgottenrealms/images/1/1c/Sarrukh_4th.JPG), this (http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20071102071935/forgottenrealms/images/e/eb/Sarrukh.jpg), or the one on the right (http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20070211211559/forgottenrealms/images/f/f1/Yuan-ti_-_Sam_Wood.jpg), but without the obscene LA that comes with it (+8 on Sarrukh, +7 on Yuan-ti Abomination). Is there anything out there that might match what I'm looking for - some obscure Yuan-ti offshoot or depowered Sarrukh that's actually playable?

Would you accept a homebrew version?

Depending on the quality of the homebrew, sure. I don't need it for a game yet, I would just like to know if there's one out there - eventually I do want to make one.

You can get it cheap in GURPS... but in DND we can only get more costly than the abomination.

I know homebrew that could get you the physical body of a Sarrukh or Yuan-ti Pureblood for one level (not LA, an actual level, with skillpoints and everything), and a lot more stuff if you take the whole class. These (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=2696.0) two (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=2855.0).

How about Shinomen naga from Oriental Adventures? http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/oa_gallery/Shinomen_naga.jpg Greensnake naga have 1 HD and LA +1, Chameleon naga - 2 HD and LA +2, Asp naga and Cobra naga both 3 HD and LA +3.

Edit: 3.5 update for OA was printed in Dragon #318

It's not really any better than being an Abomination or Sarrukh (because you're saddled with horrible RHD/LA), but you could start out as a Yuan-ti half-blood and go into the Yaun-Ti Cultist prestige class (from Savage Species). Reaching higher levels in the class changes your shape step-by-step to resemble a Yuan-Ti abomination.

But I'd really second the Shinomen Naga from Oriental Adventures. Greensnake nagas in particular are pretty well-suited for adventuring, with LA +1 (per the update in Dragon Magazine 318) in exchange for +1 natural armor, +2 Str, +4 Dex, a poison special attack, telepathy that functions with other nagas, and an alternate form ability (though said alternate form is exclusive to female nagas).

How's this?

Snakefolk (Season name to fit)

+2 Dexterity, +2 Charisma, -2 Intelligence. Snakefolk are lithe and charming, but not too bright.
Medium size
A snakefolk's base land speed is 30 feet. Snakefolk also have a 20ft swim speed.
Darkvision out to 60 feet
+2 natural armor bonus
Natural weapons: bite 1d4
Snake Tail: Instead of legs, snakefolk support themselves on a powerful tail. So supported, they are much more stable than clumsy two-leggers, gaining a +4 bonus to resist trip and bull rush attempts. In addition, gain the Constrict special ability, dealing 1d6+ 1 1/2 times their strength modifier damage with a successful grapple check.
Snakefolk have a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. They can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. They can use the run action while swimming, provided they swim in a straight line
Scent
LA +1

I'm fairly sure that a creature without legs can't be tripped.

A Synthesist Summoner (Base class, achievable at level 1) with Serpentine Body and a Limbs (arms) evolution.

Cons:
Pathfinder
Can be turned into a human (or whatever) by a dismissal spell.
Becomes human (or whatever) while sleeping.

There's also the Replacement Tail graft in Fiend Folio; it replaces a creature's legs or rear limbs with a serpentine tail for 12,000 gold. It also reduces your land speed and gives you a swim speed.

*grin evilly * and dragon magazine is banned most the time, so no errata to nerf it ;)

If you're talking about the Shinomen Naga, they actually don't have a Level Adjustment listed in Oriental Adventures, so as a player you can't use them by RAW without Dragon 318, nerf or no. Wow, Oriental Adventures is poorly organized. Objection withdrawn.

Ah, all right. 3.0 never did have a good way of dealing with monster LAs, and placing them in a separate chapter entirely is about par for the course.

So far, I like all of the suggestions...while Replacement Tail is a bit expensive, the homebrew serpentfolk and racial classes for abomination and sarrukh are nice, and shinomen naga almost nails it on the head (points for being 3.5/3.0). Thanks everyone!
