...Wasn't sure whether to drop this in Gaming (Other) or here - picked here as I guess that there won't be many players since there are only 100-odd players left in the UK...

...But apparantly wargaming is 100 years old this year, the first set of rules being published by H.G. Wells as Little Wars (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22777029).

Now that I didn't know. That's pretty cool.

Checked the Wikipedia page, and the full title is hilarious: Little Wars: a game for boys from twelve years of age to one hundred and fifty and for that more intelligent sort of girl who likes boys' games and books.

It must be said that there were war games before that. But they were officially for training officer and were not at all and most certainly not played for fun, how could you even say that, Sir!

I.e. the Prussian "War Game" of 1812. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kriegsspiel_%28wargame%29)

And the girls had to wait 'til My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic for the rejoiner...

I believe one could call Chess the first (or at least a very early) wargame, albeit not a very realistic one.
