View Full Version : Move Silently/Hide while flying?

Are there any specific rules in regards to moving silently and hiding while flying, or are they treated normally?

Thinking of a Pseudodragon in particular, if that changes anything.

It's treated normally, as far as I know. Owls are supposed to be incredibly silent fliers, for example, and the SRD entry for Giant Owl (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/owlGiant.htm) just gives them a situational bonus.

There are no special rules about that. It is entirely at the discretion of DM.

Yeah I never seen any rules for it, but Id say large creatures with wings would maybe get some negatives or ones that dont streamline well (looking at you every humanoid with wings). Beholders, ghost, fly spell, and other such things with no wings would more then likely make no noise anyways.

Even without wings flapping, the noise you make is a function of your speed through the air — specifically a quadratic function. A creature flying 60' will make 4x the noise of a similar creature flying 30'. D&D doesn't have any specific rules for this, except that they'll allow a DM to give a -2 penalty to Move Silently and a +2 bonus to Listen. (But then, Spot and Listen penalties scale linearly with distance, so people making perception checks deserve at least all the help the rules allow.)

Critters with butterfly or feathered wings are much quieter than ones with membranous or insectile (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cf/Dragonfly_ran-004.jpg) wings. In fact, one entry (in Savage Species, maybe?) for obtaining wings specifies that insectile wings are impossible to be quiet while in use.

However, a separate source book describes a Pseudodragon that can sneak while in flight, so it's possible that as long as it is gliding- not beating its wings up and down- it could be able to use Move Silently.

Savage Species is pre-3.5 rules. Before 3.5, some skills were restricted; for instance, Read Lips, Scry, and Use Magic Device were skills limited to specific classes in 3.0 D&D. In 3.5 anyone can use Move Silently. So this sort of prohibition has disappeared; instead, you just have big penalties like -20 to represent skill uses that are "practically impossible".

You mean like "sneak while running or fighting?"

do you happen to know which book that was in?

Well, it's running or charging specifically, but yeah, that's what I mean.
It’s practically impossible (-20 penalty) to move silently while running or charging. Make a normal move at more than half speed and it's just -5 for the Move Silently check, but then you're screwed if you want to attack stealthily afterward. If you're charging there's a specific allowance to Move Silently; otherwise there's no way to attack silently.

.

Um, butterflies (and moths) are insects, therefore their wings are insectile.
