Reading through the threads, I see a lot of builds: Bad, sort of good, really good, Scratching Pun-pun's title, but, how many of these builds get actual gameplay, and which characters you've played you enjoyed doing so?.

I played a Sorcerer 9/Fighter 2/Spellsword 4, that may not have been the best gish out there, but he was fun to play, and all around frightening blaster/summoner of giant eagles.

Another favorite character was a Swashbuckler 3/fighter 2/Purple Dragon Knight 5 (eerily similar to the A-Game pally, but only because of the Purple Dragon Knight levels), that was actually really good, was the party's face, but the fun thing of him is that he had Nimbus of Light, so when Diplomacy could not make the High priest of Odin (we were playing with the Greek/Egyptian/Norse pantheons) help us against the Giants, I used my nimbus to show the priest we were part of the Good Team.

Lastly, when we restarted the campaign because the DM left town for a while, I did a lvl 6 Paladin with a few exalted feats, but died by a succubus, and returned a ghoul. It was hard to pass all those 'hey, there's some corpses you wanna eat' moments, and ended up gaining some levels in Risen Martyr. Wow, did those levels helped the paladin somewhat.

I feel like this thread might have been done a few times over. Very well then:

Illumian Duskblade 3, Wizard 2, Spellsword 1, Abjurant Champion 3.

A solid gish build with some minor cheese to get into spellsword early and the ability to channel touch spells. Dynamic, flexible build with both spontaneous and prepared casting.

The real fun comes from the Illumian part. With a quick casting of Invisibility, Swift on my cloak, revealing the dozens of explosive runes carved on my skin, I could suicide-bomb the BBEG and walk away, due to being immune to all runes greater than or equal to my caster level.

Besides I just love gishes.

Goliath barbarian 4/scout 3/peregrine runner 3. My first charachter and probably the best. Just point, charge and smash. Rinse and repeat.

Desert Half-Orc Paladin with RSL 3/Half-Orc paragon 3/Outcast Champion 5. He just wanted to fight for betterment of Half-Orcs everywhere and make the guild that gave him a chance proud.

I really liked a few for the moment.

What I really hoped to be fun has been a Cleric of Tymora4/Warlock1/Divine DiscipleX. So far he is a Cleric 2/Warlock 1 but not as much fun as I thought he would be.

On the character side atm is my Azurin Totemist 2. Planned is to somehow get into Warshaper asap as I think this will be the most fun. He is a lighthearted illiterate barbaric fool. And I just have fun to outlogic stuff with his "streetcunning".

I find my favorite characters to play have everything to do with the fluff and very little to do with the build except for how well the build integrates into the fluff.

Dusk Eclipse

Dusk Eclipse (yes my namesake) is my favourite D&D character and he wasn't optimized at all (shifter rogue 8/swordsage 1 and I only got to play one session with that last level).

Whisper gnome deviner 7/ shadow craft mage 5/ initiate of the seven fold 3. Still play this character when other party members come back to town.

I would agree whole-heartedly.

I GM most of the time, but when one of my players wants to run a mini-campaign, I get to break out my posting namesake- Caladan, a Grey Elf Fighter 2 / Wizard 5 / Eldritch Knight 3 along with his trusty sidekick (Loyalty at 6th!), Armiger Grimm, a kobold Fighter 2 / Sorcerer 5 / Dragon Adept 1. The pair are a classic Straight / Funny combination. Not mechanically the most powerful, but my group runs a straight SRD / Core game. I even use two different voices for my PC and the cohort (my wife loves Grimm, because he is "new" to civilization and questions civilized assumptions all the time).

Since I went with the combat expertise route with Caladan, he is a defensive front line combatant who can blast when needed, and Grimm provides direct damage spell casting. I do however, outfit Grimm with Caladan's share of treasure, so the two are a little behind in Wealth By Level, but they are fun to play.

After many many many years and a good number of D&D editions, I gotta say that I keep coming back to warlock characters. Although it's been years since I played a vanilla warlock, and the class itself is average at best in its original form, I like it so much that I've reworked the entire class 4 times now just so I can keep making awesome warlock characters.

So my vote goes for Warlock X/Hellfire Warlock 3/Binder 1 glaivelock and Warlock 2/Cleric X/Eldritch Disciple 10 with DMM. Or maybe Warlock X/Hellfire Warlock 3/Binder 1/Ur-Priest 2/Eldritch Disciple 8 if I feel like I want the cake and eat it too. :smallamused:

Warlocks also make the best BBEGs.

My favorite that I've played was a custom Lizardfolk-ish race Cleric/Sorcerer/Geomancer.

Not optimized by a long shot, but me and my friends always refer fondly to the Shiv'Rok/Kentos game (the names of my character and the rogue in our game). Had tons of fun.

Second runner up is the bard I played.

I have a character I'm building for a level 15 party that I haven't even played yet that's already my favorite.

It's a Warblade 7/Bard 3/Jade Phoenix Mage 5, a dragonblooded human that has, amongst other things, Dragonfire Inspiration and Song of the White Raven. Also maxed out Bluff ranks and Glibness in spells known.

I am WAY TOO EXCITED to field her.

Probably the most fun for me to play was Ramas Nathanem Transmuter/Master Transmogrifist. He was utterly insane -- personality modeled after Master Shake from ATHF. The whole campaign started as a joke since we didn't think our DM at the time was going to continue with it.

Hmm.... well, as a DM, I've had quite a few. One was a mob boss in a freeport. The players could never quite figure out what he was or what he wanted.

I've run RHoD a few times, and Jorr was always fun. On one of the run-throughs where I altered a fair bit, I made him slightly crazy. At the time, I hadn't played Borderlands, but looking back, I was basically channeling Scooter.

Favorite PC, though.... Jeez. I'm not sure. I'm on of those hopeless "They've all got a special place" people. It was probably my gnome necromancer in a PF game. He only saw a few sessions (the DM was massively incompetent, and very much enjoyed his rail roading >.>) but I had fun playing Sir Samuel Fitz-William Smythe. He tagged along with the party because they were entertaining. If I recall correctly, he kept his undead in a portable hole tied in a slip knot around a chain on his chest. When danger threatened, he'd give the knot a tug, and BAM! Skeletal tiger to the face.

A Dread Necromancer which took the Necrotic Potentate prestige class from Complete Guide to Liches. He mostly used a small regimen of powerful undead bodyguards and a combination of a quickened avasculate and maximized greater harm to kill people. However, I also gave him a spell storing scythe and improved trip so his undead and the party could get a lot of AOOs. Combining his charnel touch with tomb tainted soul when he was still living meant infinite free healing outside combat too.

My favorite character that I got to play recently was a human Conjurer 3/Master Specialist 10/Thamaturgist 3. It was the first time that I got to play a wizard where it was focused on a few specific things, and not trying to cover all the party's bases as "the caster". I focused on battle field control and secondary damage, and it was a blast. I could summon monster's as a swift action, offensively teleport enemies into a kill zone, and leave them trapped and nicely clumped for the blaster to tea off on. I was amazed at how potent and versatile a conjurer could be, and for once I wasn't stressed out for spell preparation.

I've only played three characters so far, but my favourite was probably Bunt my warforged warblade.

He was the only warforged in the campaign setting we were playing in, and had only one name that he gave himself as he liked the sound of it. He constantly switched back and forth between gendered pronouns both for himself and for other people as he had never really figured out what the difference was supposed to be.

I still remember fondly the time when most of the party were absent, so it was just me and the raptoran cleric/stormlord in this classic wizard's tower sort of dungeon, we were fighting some stone golems when one of them grappled the cleric, Bunt went for a crazy powerful swing (full PA) destroyed the golem he was fighting, and proceeded to cleave to the other golem using his natural slam attack for another full PA but this time with emerald razor, and basically just leapt and stomped the stone golem's head into dust.

Memories :')

He only ever got to level 5 before the campaign died :(

Top 5 are probably...

T'Siris - Old character that made the transition from 2nd ed to 3rd. Tiefling Shadowmage21/Thief28. Most enemies couldn't locate him to engage him. Eventually became Rogue12/Illisionist5/Shadow Adept10/Arcane Trickster10. Not optimized but fun.

Kyrios- Catfolk Wizard5/Wild Mage10/Ranger5 (Used the feat where ranger added caster level to Wizard. Married the party's gold elf rogue and then had kids. Fun times. House ruled the old wild surge rules from 2nd ed back into wild mage. Seeing everyone take cover when you cast is a blast.

Istvanaurianauthinos- 1/2 Amethyst Dragon Psychic Warrior12. (LA buyoff). Discovered Combat Reflexes and Spiked Chain were cool and I itha really high Strength score and huge size, you do alright.

Varashiel- Elf Ranger 1/Crusader (from Dragon Magazine)13 of Sheverash. Dropped a Lake on a drow city after sealing all the tunnels off.

My favourite character to ever play was a Paladin of Tyranny/Suggested Fix Hexblade revolving around hexes and intimidate and able to frighten or panic people very quickly very easily.

The reason I liked him so much was his personality, though he was incredibly fun to play, he had the whole cliche'd 'exiled' from his fathers kingdom thing and was trying to gain support and build an army to retake it portraying himself as a wronged prince trying to gain the rule he should rightfully have. However he was actually a horrendously cruel, arrogant and evil man and this was very apparent to anyone who fought alongside him for any amount of time who was exiled by his father, who was a fairly good and honest ruler, due to a failed coup in lieu of what would normally be a death sentence. He was manipulative, showboaty and believed the entire world was owed to him. He caused paladins to fall, turned his siblings first against each other and then against his father, imagined slights against himself and then acted upon them.

In other words he was a complete evil bastard with not a shred of decency in his body and loved being like that.

One of my favorites was Rogue1/Wiz5/Unseen Seer X.

The reason he was fun for me was that I had maxed out Sleight of Hand and had Invisible Spell. So his main thing was to use Sleight of Hand to hide his casting from the party and act like he was just a normal unassuming guy. I was the skill monkey of the group, so most of them didn't question me not being that great in combat.

In truth he constantly threw out illusions or BFC spells while holding ornate sticks, raising a signet ring, or the like. So when he did openly use magic they assumed he was using a wand, or other magic item to do it.

Eventually, he was discovered for being a Wizard but it was all fun. The looks on their faces when they realized that he had been holding back and acting the fool the entire time...priceless!

Krobar
2013-08-08, 11:16 AM
My favorite is probably Krobar (hence my name here). He's a Chaotic Neutral Monk 1 / Cleric 19 of Kord who primarily uses unarmed strikes. His backstory included the LN to CN alignment change - the discipline of the monastery just wasn't for him.

He was EXTREMELY short-tempered, belligerent, used bad language, and beat the hell out of anything and everything he could. Around level 13 or 14 he got separated from the rest of the party in a dungeon, and had to beat a 12 headed hydra to death with his fists, by himself. He succeeded.

That character was fun. Especially the role-playing, with his foul mouthed, belligerent attitude.

Cheesy Mary Sue Changeling Duskblade with emotional problems piloting a giant robot.

I miss that campaign.

I usually play as a Beguiler/Fiend Blooded. I kinda just like playing as it. Some of the spells you can get access to through Fiend Blooded at ridiculous.

I used Wither Limb combined with Chain Spell. See an army charging? Now you see an army dropping all their weapons/falling to the ground and only moving 5'/round. Needs crazy high DC but it's possible.

Another fun one I used on a higher level campaign was Call of the Beast. I used Collar of Umbral Metamorphosis and a bunch of Hiding and Move silently gear, plus invisibility spells to get into an enemy's army camp. A lot of the spells were just for redundancy and safety. I also had a very high Hide and Move Silently so.. safe. I snuck into all of the adviser's tents and cast Call of the Beast on them. I figured the General may be too strong to do it to. I then cast it on some sergeants (using my remaining spell slots) and left. Had to be careful with my Con and use a wand of restoration when I was in safe place.

The next day, we fought an army missing most of it's leaders and was a disorganized mess. Apparently it's hard to trust someone who just went on a killing spree. Our army and our players steamrolled them with minimal losses lol.

Doing stuff out of combat is what makes a lot of the game fun from what I can tell.

So far my favorite character has been a Psion(Telepath)/Thrallherd. Or taking out Thrallherd just Psion. I love the ability to augment the characters abilities, makes even level 1 powers useful at high levels.

So I started playing PF rules RHoD earlier this year, I made a Cleric of Kossuth and tried to cover way too many bases with my spells, as well as being the frontline fighter, he dabbles in blasting, necromancy, buffs, healing, way too many things . Anyway I enjoyed playing him and hope to continue doing so once school starts back up. But he wasn't my favorite, our DM let one of the players roll for a random encounter and she rolled up a Gray Render, at level 5. The DM expected us to run away but I had a small squad of bloody skeletons(love that variant) and the ranger was trigger happy so we went at it. Long story short it tore my skeletons apart but we killed it and I raised it as a bloody skeleton. It was amazing and successfully grappled a dragon off a bridge and my DM is probably going to try and kill it. But it is my favorite character ever even if its name isn't something I can post on the forum(it made me mad when it slaughtered my skeletons when we fought.), and it has no actual character.

One pretty fun one was a slime rider. Used thrall of Jubilex and the amulet of slime riding. not at all optimized, but just really really peculiar. AS I believed someone mentioned, it's usually about the fluff when it comes to favorite builds.

Whenever I have created a character that I've liked, the campaign has lasted less than 4 sessions OR the game has sucked so badly that I've hated everything, including my character.

Nevertheless, I'd like to give the honor to the 9th-level ogre fighter in a mithral fullplate, flying an advanced huge-sized giant eagle.
It was just great to land that thing in a middle of town square... Played him once, though.

Oh my. Hard question; I can't really single out any one character I played, I've had great moments with quite a few.

For example my Cleric/Radiant Servant of Lathander. Rather standard build so far, was already pretty badass simply by virtue of being a non-healbot Cleric, but then I added DMM Persist, you can imagine the rest.

Or a simple, single-classed Ranger with Bane of Enemies, in a Middle Earth game (with serious houserules). Since Middle Earth only has a limited selection of likely foes, I got my Bane bonuses against pretty much everything I'd meet. But the best part about him was the roleplaying as such, as he became one of the four Captains of the Rangers of the North and experienced many awesome adventures.

Another character that I loved because he had a very unusual build was a Cleric/Ranger who relied on Light Armour and was very stealthy while having absurdly high AC at the same time. I willingly gave up 9th level spells because I simply didn't need them. (played up to level 18 or so)
The best thing about him was that he did so many things that nobody would expect of a Cleric. ^^

There were some others, such as a Warblade/Bloodstorm Blade and a Gray Elf Wizard, but I didn't play them as much as I would have liked because the DM left us in the lurch.

My favorite's also the longest-lasting character I ever played. Belomil Galascient, a Gray Elf Conjurer/Sacred Exorcist who used the PHB2 ACF for specialist wizards to teleport 10' as an immediate action INT bonus times per day. Before people start throwing things at me for my cheese, let me say that I warned the DMs (it was a large group, so we had two) that this was an incredibly broken ability, but they thought the game would be so challenging that they allowed it anyway. Long story short, I never took a point of damage in that game, from level 2 to level 14 or so. He had some awesome fluff too, but sadly it rarely came up during gameplay.

My all time favorite Character would have to be the one I played for a full two semesters. He was a LE Rouge 7 Assassin 10 the party nick named Truelove! He spent most of the time trying to Romance both of the Twin Polymorphed Brass(?) Dragons. He would interchangably call them Mamby and Bamby or Mimzy and Bimzy. When one of the Dragon sissters lost an arm battling a red dragon he spent all his free time sitting at her bedside and bringing her flowers. Not that he didn't continue to try and romance her sister once she was recovered. When the Elder Gold Dragon anounced to our party that the only way to save the world was through a ritual ending with his death, sure as your Born Truelove raised his hand and said sure I'll be the the one to suffle you from this mortral Coild. (to which the Gold Dragon replyed "And that is the only reason I have delt with being in my employ"!) So yeah He totally got to Death Attack a Elder Gold Dragon who volintarly failed his save. Chalk one up for his rep! Of Course Mamby and Bamby were not quite as happy about his quick decision to be the one to kill there mentor, but oh well it was all for the greater good. and that was all in the first semester. He had a good selection of feats Weapon Finess, Telling Blow, TWF, Imrpoved Weapon Finess, Free Runner (i think is the name of it). and a great assortment of Spells and Skill tricks Acrobatic Backstab, spot the weekness, Back on your feat, Conceal Spell casting to a name some of the best ones. He ended up being the main Damage Dealer since we had no real full casters, (Except the Albino Drow wizard who only played a few sessions till my buddy tired of him then became the Wizard became the BBEG) and our other melleers were a CW Samurie who become Trueloves loyal Subject, and the LG Monk with an int of 8, but played like it was a 5 and she was a charcter from clueless, who became Trueloves Court Jester! I loved His Weapon sets a +3 Keen Rapier, a +2 Flaming Dagger, and his back up a +1 evil outsider Bane Light Mace (he picked that up because we were heading to the lower planes to retriave a Dragon orb, but it ended up working out so well through out the game).
Oh and his budding rivelry with the Elven Ranger Deepwood Sniper who was so Racist that Truelove created the Hate no Humans club and talked everyoen else in the party into becoming a memeber except the Elf, even had a clup house built for the hate no human's club!

Then the second semester HE BECAME THE MAIN CHARCTER!! Since he was a prince with a great back story being the second son his duty was to adventure and become an assassin because the second son is gto be the royal assassin and gaurd of the King. The Kingdom worshiped Dragons and it was a high honor to have a Half Dragon as a child, hence all the romancing of Mimzy and Bimzy! The Party travled to his hoem Island and had to stop an invading army of Drow who were not native to this world hence the Albino Drow, who he would refer to as the house Wizard, which if you have read the Drow of the Underdark understand what that means, but if you have ever seen Roots you can understand the inside joke between me and the Player who controled him till the switch. so many memories!!

Right now I have 8 different chars split into groups of 2 in a very open ended campaign with 6 guys playing (it makes it more flexible when different groups of people make it out) and so far my favorites are a tiefling factotum 6 and a blooded goliath cleric 1 barb 3.

Tolkien the token Factotum is fun because he always has something in his bag of tricks, primarily a tripping skill monkey. Not a lot of good in a fight but RPing him is a blast.

Laconos is my goliath, a whirling frenzy barb with full plate of speed/calling. The LA+2 is a pain but still a ton of fun.
