View Full Version : Songs for an Eberron Campaign Soundtrack?

Hey playground, got a not-so-simple question. Eberron's "gritty" dungeonpunk theme has been a favorite of mine for a long time now, and I was wanting to expand on the iTunes playlist I currently have with some more songs that fit the mood. As it stands I have pieces from the Dark Knight trilogy and both of the relatively recent Sherlock Holmes films acting as atmosphere (Bane's theme from TDKR has a penchant for playing at just the right moment, and the version I have is quiet until the chanting starts).

Any ideas?

Bumping. I probably should have posted this earlier in the day...

Are you familiar with Shards of Eberron? That's pretty much the literal Eberron soundtrack.

I actually did not know that was a thing. Gonna look into that.

It's apparently fairly obscure. I enjoyed it; there's a surprising variety of moods and styles, all from the same composer. "Lord of Blades" might be good for what you're looking for.

Moving a little further afield, I'm a huge fan of Bear McCreary's work on Battlestar Galactica, which reaches virtually every mood and emotion you could imagine, often using instruments you've never heard of. "Kat's Sacrifice" is incredible.

I also enjoy his soundtrack for The Sarah Connor Chronicles, although it goes way too techno, or dubstep or whatever; but he really captures the sheer, inexorable mass of a cyborg coming at you.

Now that it's probably too late, how about some League of Legends music? The Freljord theme is my favorite, but it's all pretty great. Although the only mood it seems capable of evoking is "epic."

EDIT: And here's the link. (https://soundcloud.com/leagueoflegends)

Steam Powered Giraffe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDRHx4cPgbE) for your warforged moments.

I may use LoL, but I know two of my players will pick up on it right away.

There's an actual soundtrack CD bundled with Sharn: City of Towers

Got that already (Shards of Eberron).

That's the soundtrack I recommended earlier. What do you think?

It's pretty good, although I'm still looking for more.

try this: Airship Pirate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPH1OoTobtk)

or this: Building Steam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLokoA915fg)

or this: The Clockyard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aoaynVf0Z4)

hope they fit.

Songs with discernable lyrics don't work that well IME. It distracts players from the narrative portions and can distract me the rest of the time. Bane's theme works because my players don't know the lyrics (all 2 words of it) and the lyrics are both quiet and dramatic.

If anyone has some good jazz/techno trance/orchestral music/non-vocal symphonic metal, I'd appreciate it.

Gustav Holst's "Mars Bringer of War" is always good for a boss fight, I imagine it'd work quite well in a Xen'drik ruin filled with giants. It has a nice "hmmm, something seems amiss here, we'd better cast buffs/the chase has begun" section until about four and a half minutes in when the DA DADADA DA DA! starts.

Dirge of Cerberus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu31dSSSU_I)
Portal 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_gknRMZ-OU)

Those are some options for music.

You ask, you get:
You might like Hellsing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e635slmlrsc) Ultimate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oivkaNRW_iI) soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNyOu5Gmm-A) and maybe a piece or two from the original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHEswgIZFKc) series (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcFuxKlg_VY).

Solid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtqMOKuUNHs) State (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8OVH5AsuQA) Society (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHP5_awxHlE) soundtrack composed by Yoko Kanno. Some of the pieces contain lyrics, but they aren't that intrusive and decidedly not discernible.

For jazz you can always peruse Cowboy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAczwhihCyk) Bebop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuAzPR0ACVw) soundtrack again composed by Yoko Kanno (there are also more relaxed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRxPFRHwjcI) jazz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmFAJPArhqM) pieces there).

If we go back to various installments of Ghost in The Shell, then we cannot omit brilliant music by Kenji (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lE9X3RgdVjs) Kawai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5IIus4r-GQ). He does use human voices, but it's just another instrument.

For symphonic metal I'd recommend Rainbow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfEWIEsbIX4), but it might be too energetic for a gritty theme.

For interesting jazz music (orof the acid variety), you might want to try James (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkUe0k2-5sQ) Taylor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnvceLC1WYw) Quartet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w14tvQV-K-Q), although it is more suited for heist adventures.

For more traditional jazz, there is for example Tomasz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H51xGk0lMwk) Stańko (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMkq_sQlRlk) - he is really great.

In that case, go with the entire Ghost in the Shell soundtracks. (except for the four or so vocal tracks.)

When it comes to Khyber, nothing beats "The Thing". Well, maybe "Silent Hill" soundtracks and part of the "Quake 1" soundtrack.

I actually have GiTS and Beebop in the playlist all ready, but good point on Hellsing (I have the 2 disk OST for the original anime, and can easily find the Ultimate one).

If you want durable fight music, heavy on the percussion and slowly building to an epic crescendo, you should check out Storming New Caprica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=so10dKbhorI). Another good militaristic theme is Prelude to War (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlcUwUwjLrs). For a shorter fight sequence, there's Scar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAeL6o4LWzM).

For otherworldly strangeness, there's Heeding the Call (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2dyN5A12js). For moody, ominous foreboding, try Something Dark is Coming (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EQXEIoZrZE).

For somber nobility, there's Kat's Sacrifice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OcQUoRimcM), one of the most powerful pieces from the series. Somewhat shorter is Martial Law (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUuZpn_SUiw); these two would be good for transitions or chapter endings.

And for sheer style-bending funkiness, you can't beat Dirty Hands (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6N_XXK6cns).

Just remembered: check out Berserk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew3--XVFioU) soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5MJYPioVVg) (it also has excelent pieces like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAM_fhwv3gU) or that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj1hWWU8JDE), but the singing might get in the way)

If you use the less energetic jazz pieces, then those people are great:
Mikołaj (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2wB1PdCd6I) Trzaska (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n6dyfEOLr8), Leszek (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gjl0KrkWZlc) Możdżer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEf7m67eiy0) (here together with Danielsson and Fresco)
