View Full Version : The most quintessential "this is who they are" lines

So, in #909, we get what I think is probably the one line that sums up Belkar's character, character arc and place in the story, all while being dramatic and even a little bit poignant.

The frustration and even earnestness in "I officially have no idea what you people want from me!", made me really feel for him. I have previously loved Belkar's fever dream when he was coached on how to play nice with others and be true to himself, and the bits of calling Roy out while noting that the main reason they keep him around is that he knows how to hurt people. But this tops it all, to me here in one line.

I mean, given everything they've gone through with trying to relate to, work with, rein in, punish, accommodate him, etc. ... for Belkar to then see something Obviously Evil just so much more accepted on sight than he ever has been... if one follows the strip a bit, I think this bit right here is, if not the peak or turning point for his character for the rest of the series, probably the one that sums it up best.

What is the equivalent of "I officially have no idea what you people want from me!", for the other OOTS members? (Or other characters in general?) Not as simplistic as their battle cry, or common refrain, or a funny quip... I mean, the one line that really resonates because of their character arc in the story?

For O-Chul...

Roy: "How did you get this?? (list of Xykon's spells, feats, etc.)"

O-Chul: "One saving throw at a time."

That says it all right there.

LOL. There's a reason I have this in my sig.

I also think my V quote sums up "Old V" (trigger happy and loquacious) but not necessarily new V.

If the idea is to sum up what they have learnt, from their story arcs:

V: "And that would be wrong".

(Though I think V's lessons are far from over)

Haley, probably her speech to her father?

Roy, um, maybe his speech to his father, when Eugene was refusing to scry?

For Haley definitely
"no dad, you raised me well"

It shows how much she progress from not trusting anyone to finally being able to change what she has been taught her entire life and finally trust SOMEONE. Given in context that what she said was within the bluff potion effect ofc.

Belkar has a couple of them, I thought his "Hurting people is all I'm good at" in #881 was a pretty good stab in the feels, just for how self-aware it is. It's the bare truth, unlike his ideal of the sexy shoeless god of war.

Someone has to say it:
:vaarsuvius: I prepared explosive runes this morning.

I think it's impressive and a sign of good character development that these things change so much over time. For instance, I think

:vaarsuvius: I...I must succeed (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0634.html).

fit V really well for the whole arc after Azure City. Succeeding where V had failed, finding relief from the guilt of not being able to do more for the Azurites, had completely taken over V's outlook and perspective on everything, and any price was worth it, even selling V's soul (however temporarily). Now, though? I'm not sure what fits V best at the moment. I think we're still very much in the middle of V's development for this arc.

Oh, and one more:

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g68/Cats_Are_Aliens/Banners/Blackwing.png Hey! History isn't over yet, mister!

Comically missing the point could be blackwing's middle name. (and his first and last, in case you didn't catch it the first time.)

I almost went with that one, but I was too lazy to find the Tarquin head and I thought a line from the actual character would be better. Though I agree, it sums up Thog nicely.

To me, both Redcloak’s and Tsukiko’s defining lines come from the same comic (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0830.html):

:redcloak: “Because, let’s be clear: If I tolerated your humiliating attempts to undercut my authority before, it was only because killing you would’ve upset the delicate puppet strings upon which ‘Lord Xykon’ unknowingly dances. But if you’re going to stand here and tell me that you’ll expose one of those strings to him? If you’re going to be that stupid? There can only be one rational response to that”.

Kind of really sums up everything about him. Willing to endure it all as long as the plan is on track. Willing to do anything to keep the plan on track.

And then of course:

Tsukiko: “I love you all! I Love you!” “Why don’t …. you love …. me?”

Do we really need to say more?

I shouldn't think custom smilies will be necessary for these ones:

While we certainly enjoy exploiting your actions... We have no interest in explaining our own.

I can't decide on this one:

I had a different name when I was alive 200 years ago. I was the ignorant barbarian shaman of a tribe that no longer exists. Bringing me back to life is just a complicated way of annihilating the person I am today. Save your diamond dust and stake me instead.

Or:

But let me ask you a philosophical question: What sort of man would help someone he just met develop a means to shield a large group of people from himself? At least, without sneaking in a back door, just in case? ... My aid is mine to give or withdraw as I see fit. Now let's see if we can't reach a compromise after all.

And finally...

- then let me friends go. Dinnae kill them too. Tha's me last request. Tha's all tha matters. Thar young and mostly a gods-awful mess inside, but they got too much worth livin' fer still. More'n me, at least. I'm na worried about it anymore, see... na really... ...I get ta go home.

Because every other villain has various character traits to make them seem more human and believable, but reduces their inherent cartoonishness. Xykon doesn't have that. :xykon: Force, in as great a concentration as [he] can manage, and style.
And in a pinch, style can slide. He's downright disturbing when Rich stops playing his sadism for laughs.

Case in point:

When the phylactery gets lost. He looks stunned/surprised for a moment, then he resumes what looks like his default face. However thanks to context, we know he is pissed and that face becomes worrisome.

:roy: But like it or not, you are still MY responsibility. Because I am the only one here who's willing to be responsible.

:elan: I am not a hero...I just play one in a comic strip.

:durkon: I'm na worried aboot me anymore, see...na really... ...I get ta go home.

:haley: When I was a little girl, my daddy taught me the words of a very wise man: "You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em. Know when to walk away, and know when to run."

:nale: Well I can't very well allow you to continue breathing after an insult like that, now, can I? Because no one denies me, Elan. Not father, not you, no one.

:miko: The gods have a plan for me. I know it! I'm special, the most powerful paladin in the Sapphire guard!

Because every other villain has various character traits to make them seem more human and believable, but reduces their inherent cartoonishness. Xykon doesn't have that. He's 100% balls to the wall Evil. He's a deliberate throwback to old 80s cartoon villains that had no characterization other than "is the bad guy". To use his own words, the entirety of his personality is...

Where was this? I think this is the quote I was looking for, but I couldn't find it and went with the "too many lives at stake" instead.

Put my vote on massive concentrations of power and style for Xykon--for affable Xykon. For Xykon when he's been made angry?

:xykon:"No. You're not regenerating anything. That eye? That's your individual Idiot Tax. That's what this fiasco costs you, personally. I want you to remember every moment of every day what happens if we sit on our lazy ASSES and rearrange the furniture in a ruined city instead of moving on to the next target."

The fun part about this thread is covering the smileys and seeing if you can tell who the character is. Some lines are just so damn distinctive.

For Elan, the quintessential line I usually think of actually comes from Bob and George (http://www.bobandgeorge.com/archives/000802c) (paraphrased):

"What is your primary mission?"
"To protect the gates and stop Xykon."
"And your secondary mission?"
"To be an idiot."

If it has to be a line from Order of the Stick (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0558.html), I would probably go with:

"With moderate power comes moderate responsibility."

My favorite (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0069.html) line of his is:

"I didn't save you so we could interrogate you. I saved you 'cause I'm the Good twin, not the Neutral twin."

My least favorite (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0784.html) line of his is:

"Hooray! The people whose names I know are saved!"

That's a beauty of it all, my son: if I win I get to be a king. If I lose, I get to be a Legend.

"end Elan? Good Job" "AAAAHHH! Triple Fantasy!!"

And, the most important:

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/trytoguess/Shojo.png"Answer the question: who you are?"
:belkar:"an halfling?"
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/trytoguess/Shojo.png"what else?"
:belkar:"a Ranger? With a Sprinkle of Barbarian?"
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/trytoguess/Shojo.png"Is that all you are? A race and a class? Another forgettable mix-and-match player character?
:belkar:No!
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/trytoguess/Shojo.png: If you die, will another halfling ranger just happen to show up to take your place?
:belkar: HELL, no!
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/trytoguess/Shojo.png: Then what ARE you?
:belkar: I'm Chaotic Evil!
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/trytoguess/Shojo.png: Still just a label. What else?
:belkar:: I'm -- I'm comedy gold
:belkar:: I'm the only funny thing left in this damn comic strip!
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/trytoguess/Shojo.png: WHAT ELSE??
:belkar: I'm--
:belkar:: I'm--
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i294/trytoguess/Shojo.png: You know the answer to this, say it! SAY IT!

:belkar:I'M A SEXY shoeless god of war.........

I think the most quintessential Belkar quote - prior to his recent character development - would be the classic:

"Well, I figured we'd wander around, kill some sentient creatures because they had green skin and fangs and we don't, and then take their stuff."

"What?"

Particularly the "What?", as it emphasised how put out he was that anyone would see anything wrong with what he just said.
