Are there any guidelines on the availability (or pricing) of body parts from exotic creatures? For use in manufacturing magic items, using the simulacrum spell, and so on.

I know that a lot of it will come down to DM fiat (e.g. as in ruling that Eschew Materials does not allow one to avoid the component requirement of simulacrum - it being "an expendable focus" not a material component), but if there are guidelines based on creature type, CR, etc., it would be nice to know about them.

There is a tiny bit of information in the DMG on page 36, but it doesn't go into detail listing parts or prices.

Unearthed Arcana has a large list of metamagic components on page 141.

Book of Exalted Deeds has some on page 37, and Book of Vile Darkness has some material components starting on page 45.

There are several listings for power components in Dragon, I know that issue 332 has components derived from dragons (page 48-57, might be a good thing to look at as a baseline if you are going to homebrew any of your own), and issue 317 has a large list as well (page 44-49).

There are probably others in Complete Mage, or Complete Arcane

You can also just buy whole creatures (slaves)

Cost = (CR, minimum 1)^2 × 100 gp (Lord of madness pg 101)

And as everything about a Simulacrum is half the original making the component cost half this amount might even be a fair way to go too.

So you could buy a 20th level wizard for 40,000 gp?

Considering that a 20th level wizard has an expected wealth of 760, 000 gp, this seems a real bargain.

I'm fairly sure those rules are for 'average' members of their race. So a human would be 100gp, because most humans are first level Commoners.

Meanwhile, a bugbear slave would be 400gp.

Hmmm. Maybe so. How about a Black Ethergaunt? 17th level wizard spellcasting, CR 17. 28,900 gp.

edit: I see that this is in a section on Neogi slavers. It is unlikely they'd have an ethergaunt for sale. And also the price can be up to 4 times higher, depending on the qualities of the slave. Still broken, but it works well enough for enslaved dwarves and trolls and such.
