So when making 3D models of OOTS style characters, do you think the eyes should be modeled on top of the head, or inset? There is a third option which I have not investigated which is just having the ovals on the surface.

I have a quick render for this comparison:

Thoughts?

Honestly, I think they should be part of the diffuse map. If that's not an option, inset.

Diffuse map looks nice , but personally I prefer inset that looks quite natural and its an easy to do task.

If its part of the diffuse map, that would not allow it to be rigged though, right?

Crap, they're becoming intelligent.

Nope.

ACTUALLY!

You can animate via moving the eye UVs to different areas of the texture, for different expressions!

The easiest way to do this would be to have the eyes be a separate pair of alpha cards just on top of the face area.
