I'm thinking about making a lizard man cleric for a run through of red hand of doom. problem is I don't know which race to use - there are quite a few variations on the basic theme of lizard man. Any suggestions? LA buy off is in effect. if it matters I am planning to make a relatively mêlée oriented cleric.

Not sure what level RHoD starts at, but as a primary caster, you'll want something whose LA and RHD can be completely bought off by the time you start.

Picking something with good base stats, like lesser aasimar or dream dwarf, and popping Dragonborn of Bahamut on it makes for a good cleric. Lizardman and dragonman aren't quite the same, but it's pretty close.

Seconding dragonborn. Consider the rebuke dragon ACF as a possibility.

If you're ok with being dragon-themed, Dragonborn is indeed your best bet. Otherwise, Poisonscale Dusk Lizardfolk is nice. One of the races from Magic of Incarnum is reptilian, though they don't look very lizardy.

Note that "lizardman" is archaic terminology. D&D and MtG call mermaids merfolk, so for something less iconic like "lizardman" there really is no excuse not to use the "-folk" suffix.

Edit: Naming issue of my own corrected.

I'm going to recommend poisondusk lizardfolk with the LA bought off. Regular lizardfolk's RHD will destroy your ability to cast effectively.

For some reason, this makes me tremendously happy.

I second the use of Hufolk

Yes, how silly if me to forget about hufolk.

That was grammatical use that I meant.

Still, poison dusk lizardfolk look wonderful for a LA +1 option if buyoff is on the table. Man I wish I had found that sooner...
