Encephions are twisted beings born of literally diseased mind. Composed of a mass of diseased and engorged neural tissue, they look like little more than a giant, malformed brain, with four nerve-like tentacles extending from the front of the creature. Encephions are thought to be no more than a telepathic, neurological virus contained within a husk of flesh, obsessed with spreading the disease. Though the disease they spread is potent against all, it is especially feared by those gifted with psionics. The disease is far more potent against them, and a psion who succumbs to the disease undergoes a strange metamorphosis, dieing and being reborn as an Encephion.

Manifesting
An Encephion manifests psionic powers as an 8th level Telepath. It receives 74 power points each day. The save DC of its powers is equal to 14 plus the power’s level.

Typical Powers Known
1st–detect psionics, entangling ectoplasm, inertial armor, mind thrust, mindlink; 2nd–brain lock, id insinuation, mental disruption, read thoughts; 3rd–crisis of breath, dispel psionics, energy burst, telekinetic thrust; 4th–energy adaptation, power leech, psionic dimension door, schism.

Mindplague (Su)
A creature damaged by an Encephion’s slam attack is infected with a disease known as mindplague. The disease attacks the creature’s central nervous system, modifying the structure and genetic code of the creature’s brain. It has a save DC of 20 and an incubation period of 1d6 rounds. Being a supernatural disease, a creature afflicted with mindplague must make three, rather than two, saves to recover from it. In most creatures, the disease deals 1d6 points of Int damage. However, a psionic creature infected with the disease suffers additional risks. The disease deals Int burn, rather than damage to it. In addition, while infected, whenever it manifests a psionic power or psi-like ability, it must make a Will save, DC 10 plus the power’s level, or have the power fail to manifest. If it fails to manifest a power, it must then make another save against the disease’s ability burn. If a psionic creature is reduced to 0 Int by the disease, it dies. Its brain begins a grotesque process of swelling, and within 1d3 weeks, transforms into another Encephion, unless it is completely destroyed, such as through burning or disintegration. The save is Con based.

Mindsight (Su)
An Encephion can telepathically sense the minds of creatures within 60 ft. of it. This functions as the blindsight ability, except that it can only perceive intelligent creatures. However, due to the psionic resonance of the Encephion’s own thoughts, it can sense anything within 10 ft. of itself as blindsight, even if it is not intelligent.

Psychic Armor (Su)
An Encephion gains a deflection bonus to AC equal to its Intelligence modifier.
