View Full Version : Living Mysteries and Shadowcaster Spell Sovereign

The whole thing boils down to two questions:

1: Could the living spell template be applied to mysteries?

2: What would a shadowcaster have to gain from the spell sovereign PrC?
Granted, they cannot qualify without multiclassing [Need of 3 conjuration (summoning) spells], nor can they be advanced normally by it [+1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class]. But could it still be beneficial to mix the two?

that is a pretty obscure PRC from dragon 357, and I had to google it.

Indeed it is obscure, which to me is a part of it's appeal. Wish I could share the whole PrC, but I'm not certain I can.

For the purposes of the 2nd questions, I'll say this.

Spell Sovereign have the following class features: Spellcasting (7/10 arcane advancement), Living Spell Familiar (they get a living spell as a familiar. Its a 1st level spell but later on you can have up to 4th), Create Living Spell (They can 'cast' a valid spell to create a temporary living spell), rebuke living spell, enhance living spell (the spell sovereign projects an aura that provides strength and insight bonuses to AC. This bonuses and aura size increases with level), Imprison living spell (you can trap a living spell in a valuable gem to use the spell it is based on as a spell like ability a number of times equal to it's HD), Prolonged Creation (extends the amount of time living spells created via create living spell last), Multiple creations (you can make living spells made from 2 spells, but they do not last as long), Awaken living spell (the living spell gets an intelligence score, more charisma, and the ability to speak 1 language..)

I believe mysteries are spells when in their base form, so you should be fine. Tomb of Night or Prison of Night would be freaking awesome living spells.

Ok, lets go with that mysteries can become living spells. They would be pretty awesome, but…

…The template can be applied to any spell that creates an area or effect (not targeted spells), but not a spell whose effect is already a creature (such as a summon monster spell).

Unfortunately, Prison of Night:
Target: One Huge or smaller creature.
And Tomb of Night: this mystery functions like the mystery prison of night,…

That having been said. Here are the official mysteries that qualify: Arrow of Dusk, Black Fire, Black Labyrinth (* (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070307a)), Carpet of Shadow, Clinging Darkness, Curtain of Shadows, Dark Air or Water, Deadly Shade (* (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070307a)), Dusk and Dawn, Echo Spell, Ephemeral Image, Far Sight, Fearful Gloom (* (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070307a)), Flood of Shadows, Grasping Shadows (* (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070307a)),Killing Shadows, Liquid Night, Menagerie of Darkness (* (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070307a)), Pass into Shadow, Shadow Evocation, Shadow Evocation (Greater), Shadow Plague, and Sickening Shadow (* (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070307a)).

You could make a Living Spell Spell Glyph Tomb of Night as a workaround.

True, but is there a way to take Glyph of Warding or Greater Glyph of Warding to the point where one could store 8th level spells?

Also… that would wind up having to be apart of a gestalt or epic level character.

Effective Cleric Level: 11+ (For Greater Glyph of Warding)
Effective Shadowcaster Level: 15+ (For Tomb of Night)
Spell Sovereign: 1+

So..

Shadowcaster 5/(Archivist, Cleric, or Favored Soul) 4/Mystic Theurge 10/Spell Sovereign 1.

or better yet..

(Wizard 1+, Lost due to 'A Creeping Darkness')/Shadowcaster 9/Ur-Priest 2/Spell Sovereign 1/Mystic Theurge 8

Question:

Lets say a character is a Wizard 5 (CL 12)/Spell Sovereign 10, for the next 5 levels I take shadowcaster and use creeping darkness. Could he become Wizard 0 (CL 7)/Spell Sovereign 10/Shadowcaster 10, or would he be forced to be Wizard 1 (CL 8)/Spell Sovereign 10/Shadowcaster 9?

or

While I see no reason why, would one then allow: Wizard 0/Spell Sovereign 10/Shadowcaster 10 (CL 17), transferring the advancement from spell sovereign to shadowcaster.

the last one can't happen, spell sovereign advances arcane spellcasting. Shadowcasting can only be advanced by classes that don't specify arcane or divine. Although it might be possible to end up with wizard CL 0 and shadowcaster CL 10.

Well, in this situation you couldn't end up with Wizard 0 (CL 0) and Shadowcaster 10 (CL 10). The character would no longer be able to qualify for spell sovereign (Ability to cast at least three conjuration (summoning) spells, one of which must be at least 3rd level), and..

You can't lose a feat or class ability that would make you ineligible for any other feat or prestige class you already have, even if this means you can no longer take advantage of the creeping darkness feature.

So, the limit would either be Wizard 1 (CL 8) and Shadowcaster 9 (CL 9) or Wizard 0 (CL 7) and Shadowcaster 10 (CL 9).

On a different note: here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=298703) i've attempted to fix the spell sovereign, lightening some restrictions on entry and changing the language a bit.
