For a project I am working on, I need a quote from OOTS. The ideal quote would have these features:

It would be funny or dramatic, even to people who don't know its full context
It would have something to do with heroism, or saving people, or fighting evil
Ideally ideally, it would have something to do with the limits of individual heroic action when confronted with vast systems of power. (I know, not very OOTS in theme.)

Your nominations are greatly welcomed!

"I'll admit I got into this for the wrong reasons, but none of that matters now. You're a threat to the entire world, not just my family. But like it or not, you're still MY responsibility. Because I'm the only one here willing to be responsible. [...] It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it." (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0442.html)

Slightly paraphrased to excise D&D-specific context.

"Don't worry, you'll keep me safe." :smalltongue:

*reversal of the usual quote make it funny and it still dramatic.
*It have to do with heroism and saving people.
*It show the limit of individual heroic action as it implies the one saying it is conscious (s)he's aware that his power won't be enough and (s)he'll need help to overcome what's to happen.

RMS Oceanic already said my first thought, and I think that's the best one so far. Other ones off the top of my head:

:roy: "Everything about this has disaster written all over it. Shojo can't be trusted. You certainly can't be trusted. This whole "job offer" stinks worse than an otyugh covered in sauerkraut on a hot day. And yet, I'm going to accept it anyway. As much as I loathe how you've manipulated my friends and me, Xykon is an actual threat. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0293.html)" (You might want to clip the second line, maybe the first one also.)

O-Chul: "This isn't the dungeon. In a war, people on the winning side still die. You might want to consider taking it somewhat seriously. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0417.html)"

:belkar: and O-Chul : "Wait, you're THANKING me for dumping you off of a cliff?!?" "Without your cowardly actions I could not have gone where I needed to be, difficult though it was. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0666.html)"

:roy: "Just because we're outnumbered and outmagicked doesn't mean we can't pull of an upset! (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0891.html)"

I could think of more later.

Hmm... all of those, especially the last one, make me think of Elan and Tarquin's conversation about evil vs good.

A whole page of discussion here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0467.html)about the limits of individual heroic actions in the face of overwhelming odds. Haley, Durkon, Daigo and Belkar all make potentially useful speeches. Elan not so much.

But if you want a single line, "You gotta know when to hold 'em..."

So many good quotes, where to begin? Although...

Ideally ideally, it would have something to do with the limits of individual heroic action when confronted with vast systems of power.

Not OOTS, but Cloud Atlas had a good quote about this. The protagonist (one of them at least) decided to join the abolitionist movement because he realized slavery was immoral. Hid slave-owner father-in-law tells him "you joining this cause will be merely a drop in the ocean", to which the protagonist replies:
"Yet what is the ocean but a multitude of drops?"

So alone, we may be helpless against great power, but together we can accomplish anything.

From the pages linked above,

547(6) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0547.html): "If you must throw those men to their undoing, then do so and be quick. The act is on your hands, not mine. Were I free, I would kill you now and rescue them, but there is no way my words can save them."

467(10) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0467.html): "You go to know when to hold 'em..."

467(11/12) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0467.html): "But I can't leave Azure City in its hour of need!"
"Azure City's hour of need was, like, three hours ago, and you were there for that. This is now OUR hour of need, as in, 'need to not get killed for no reason.' Roy may have been OK with dying as a hero, but I'd much rather live as one. Winning the battle isn't on the table anymore. Surviving the battle is the priority now, and it's slipping away fast."

And on a quick browse:

558(4) (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0558.html): "I've gained at some small ability to influence the course of some events around me. On a good day. And so I've come to realize that I have a duty to use my limited competence to have a partial effect on the world from time to time."

My favorite OOTS quote, especially when I have a daunting task ahead of me is:

Guardian: Are you ready, then?
Roy: No, but I don't see the passage of time improving the situation.

Maybe not as heroic as what you had in mind, but there's a nice combination of resoluteness and sarcasm that appeals to me.

Hurting people is the only thing I'm good at. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0881.html)

This for some reason always gets me as being way more profound than intended. I feel it might be not quite right for your project though.

I get regret, heroism, and loneliness out of it. From Belkar, a documented Sociopath even.

I second this one. It gets overlooked (even by me) because it wasn't in a "deep" scene, but it is a rather profound quote.

I always really liked this exchange, thought it may be a bit long for your purposes:

"If someone conquers an empire and rules it with an iron fist for thirty long years, and then some paladin breaks into his throne room and kills him - what do you think he's going to remember as he lays dying?"

"... that good triumphed over evil?"

"No, that he got to live like a god for three decades! Sure, the last ten minutes sucked, but you can't have everything."

"But in the end-"

"The end of what, Son? The story? There is no end, there's just the point where storytellers stop talking.... as long as I go into this accepting the price I may eventually pay, then I win, no matter what actually happens."
